Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a rare disease of the mucous membranes with characteristics similar to other autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to recover all reported cases of CUS in order to summarize what are the clinical, demographic, microscopic, immunological features of CUS and its therapeutic response to different drugs. A systematic review of the literature was carried out following the statements of preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). The searches were performed in the electro

Five cases of probable bovine papular stomatitis in faculty and students in a university veterinary clinic precipitated an intensive surveillance program. A senior class of veterinary medical students was questioned at the beginning of their clinical training to determine their history of exposure to cattle and presence of lesions resembling bovine papular stomatitis. Fifty-nine of the 115 students reported having had their hands in the mouths of cattle frequently. One of the 59 had experienced a hand lesion resembling bovine papular stomatitis. This class was maintained under close surveillan

Lesions commonly associated with HIV infection include oral candidiasis, herpes simplex infection, oral Kaposi's sarcoma, hairy leukoplakia, periodontal diseases (linear gingival erythema and necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis), xerostomia, human papillomavirus-associated warts, aphthous ulcers, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, histoplasmosis, carcinoma, exfoliative cheilitis, and HIV salivary gland disease. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is the most common cancer in people living with HIV (PLWH), and the incidence is increased for aggressive B-cell NHL. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PbL) is a rare and aggre

This paper presents the case of a 65 year-old woman suffering from recurrent oral aphthoid ulcers which rapidly evolved towards hyperplastic and ulcerated lesions over the entire floor of the mouth. The initial lesions were interpreted as non-specific aphthoid ulcers. Later, a tentative diagnosis of necrotising stomatitis with secondary reactive proliferating epithelial hyperplasia was made. The clinical symptoms and the immuno-phenotyping of lymphocytes circulating in the peripheral blood suggested the diagnosis of CD30-positive large cell anaplastic lymphoma. The biopsy showed only a pseudoe

BACKGROUND: Romania, the pediatric AIDS capital of the world, has tremendous unmet dental care needs for children and adolescents with HIV infection. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of orodental conditions in symptomatic HIV-positive children from Constanta, Romania.
METHODS: The children underwent dental examinations and treatment at Constanta Municipal Hospital by a volunteer team of dental healthcare professionals from the United States. Oral lesions and dental caries were recorded during an 8-day period prior to initiating comprehensive dental care.
RESULTS: The st

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis and Churg-Strauss Syndrome respectively, are systemic granulomatous vasculitides affecting small- and medium-sized blood vessels. Both GPA and EGPA are included within the group of antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides, on the basis of the detection of such autoantibodies in a significant proportion of affected patients. Two main settings of GPA, possibly overlapping each other, are recognized: a localized form, which is li

BACKGROUND: Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy of childhood and adolescence, characterized by symmetrical weakness of proximal muscles and classical cutaneous features. Literature reports rarely describe or focus on oral lesions that are associated with this disease.
CASE REPORT: This case describes a 4-year-old girl in whom the oral lesions were the initial manifestations of JDM. Physical examination revealed characteristic skin manifestations, proximal muscle weakness, extensive calcinosis, necrotic ulceration, complicated erysipelas, and diffuse alopecia.

Wegener's Granulomatosis (WG) is a disorder characterized by necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis that primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the kidneys. Although the cause is unknown, there is strong evidence that this is an autoimmune disease and immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids efficiently relieves the symptoms and, prevents relapses. We report on four cases of WG that presented with unusual features. The first patient presented with vague joint pain, blackish discoloration of the skin and leg ulcers. The second patient presented as

The author observed cellular immune defect confirmed by lymphoblast transformation and hypozincemia in a 15-year old boy whose ulcerative stomatitis had been recurring for 6 years monthly and was treated without success besides local treatment with chronic administration of steroid, isoprinosin, interferon and lysosim. 3 X 50 mg of zinc sulphate given per os daily for 3 months resulted in permanent clinically symptom free condition and in the normalization of the lymphoblast transformation rate.

The importance of stress and anxiety as contributing to the complex aetiology of dental disease is becoming more widely recognized. Clinical examples of organic dental disease which were relieved when their psychological causes had been uncovered are described. It suggested that specialized psychiatric skills are not always necessary in dealing with such cases. The dentist's own personal life experience, his human understanding and his interest his patients' well-being are usually sufficient. Equal attention must be given to all data in both physical and psychological spheres if the patient's

Periodontal diseases are common oral diseases that afflict all humans to some degree. The major aetiological agent is dental plaque--the complex microflora which forms on teeth in the absence of effective oral hygiene. The interaction of the microbial flora and the periodontal tissues produces an inflammatory response and tissue breakdown. Recent information has categorized periodontal diseases on the basis of increased knowledge about the particular microorganisms associated with the different clinical conditions. In addition, the important role of host defences, in particular the phagocytic
