Effects of clinical mastitis caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and other organisms on the probability of conception in New York State Holstein dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to estimate the effects of different types of clinical mastitis (CM) on the probability of conception in New York State Holstein cows. Data were available on 55,372 artificial inseminations (AI) in 23,695 lactations from 14,148 cows in 7 herds. We used generalized linear mixed models to model whether or not a cow conceived after a particular AI. Independent variables included AI number (first, second, third, fourth), parity, season when AI occurred, farm, type of CM (due to gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, or other organisms) in the 6 wk before an…

Development of Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes of 2-Phenylbenzimidazole and Bipyridine Ligands for Selective Elimination of Gram-Positive Bacteria.

Herein, we have reported a series of cationic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active iridium(III) complexes (Ir1-Ir5) of the type [Ir(C N)2(N N)]Cl, wherein C N is a cyclometalating 2-phenylbenzimidazole ligand with varying alkyl chain lengths and N N is a 2,2'-bipyridine ligand attached to bis-polyethylene glycol chains, for the treatment of bacterial infections. The AIE phenomenon of the complexes leveraged for detecting bacteria by fluorescence microscopy imaging that displayed a strong red emission in Gram-positive bacteria. The antibacterial activity of the complexes assessed against G…

Gram-positive bacteria cell wall-derived lipoteichoic acid induces inflammatory alveolar bone loss through prostaglandin E production in osteoblasts.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease associated with severe alveolar bone loss and is dominantly induced by lipopolysaccharide from Gram-negative bacteria; however, the role of Gram-positive bacteria in periodontal bone resorption remains unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a major cell-wall factor of Gram-positive bacteria, on the progression of inflammatory alveolar bone loss in a model of periodontitis. In coculture of mouse primary osteoblasts and bone marrow cells, LTA induced osteoclast differentiation in a dose-dependent manner. LTA enhanced t…

Selective phagocytosis of gram-positive bacteria and interleukin 1-like factor production by a subpopulation of large granular lymphocytes.

There has been a consensus that a large granular lymphocyte (LGL) population with natural killer (NK) function is nonadherent and nonphagocytic. However, a significant proportion of the nonadherent cells purified by the two-step depletion of adherent cells with a plastic surface and nylon wool columns engulfed Sta. aureus into their cytoplasm. These cells were morphologically identified as LGL in light and electron microscopies. Two-color immunofluorescence tests, furthermore, demonstrated that Leu-11+ LGL, Leu-11+7-, and Leu-11+7+, but not Leu-11-7+, phagocytosed Sta. aureus. Among the partic

Conserved DegP protease in gram-positive bacteria is essential for thermal and oxidative tolerance and full virulence in Streptococcus pyogenes.

The DegP protease, a multifunctional chaperone and protease, has been shown to be essential for virulence in gram-negative pathogens such as Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Brucella abortus, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The function of DegP in pathogenesis appears to be the degradation of damaged proteins that accumulate as a result of the initial host response to infection, which includes the release of reactive oxygen intermediates. Additionally, the DegP protease plays a major role in monitoring and maintaining the Escherichia coli periplasm and influences E
