Silica sulfuric acid catalyzes efficiently the reaction of sulfonamides with both carboxylic acid anhydrides and chlorides under solvent-free and heterogeneous conditions. All the reactions were done at room temperature and the N-acylsulfonamides were obtained with high yields and purity via an easy work-up procedure. This method is attractive and is in a close agreement with green chemistry. These compounds were also investigated for antibacterial activity, including Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative bacilli, and carbonic anhydrase II inhibitory activity.

Ofloxacin (300 mg twice a day) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) (160 mg trimethoprim and 800 mg sulfamethoxazole twice a day) were given prophylactically to 19 adult patients with acute leukemia undergoing induction chemotherapy. The influence of the two regimens on the bacterial aerobic flora was evaluated. Both of the prophylactic regimens conditioned the aerobic microflora of the patients. Both groups acquired new microorganisms, prevalently gram-positive cocci, but also gram-negative bacteria with the TMP-SMZ regimen. Both treatment groups acquired yeasts.

INTRODUCTION: In the structure of tuberculosis morbidity, urogenital tuberculosis (UGT) ranks second or third only to pulmonary tuberculosis. Every fourth patient has the stage of cavern formation at first presentation. Seventy five percent of nephrotuberculosis cases co-occur with nonspecific pyelonephritis, which excludes "sterile pyuria". One hundred BacT/ALERT blood culture bottles growing gram-positive cocci in clusters were cultured and studied by LightCycler PCR for the sa442 and mecA genes. PCR was 100% sensitive and specific for detecting Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistance in S. aureus but was less accurate for methicillin resistance in coagulase-negative staphylococci.

We report a case of acute cholecystitis accompanied by acute pancreatitis and caused by Dolosigranulum pigrum in a 76-year-old male with gallstones. D. pigrum was isolated from a blood culture and confirmed by biochemistry tests and 16S rRNA sequencing. The isolate was susceptible to the beta-lactams ampicillin, penicillin, cephalothin, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, chloramphenicol, and vancomycin but was intermediate to erythromycin and clindamycin. The patient recovered without sequelae after treatment with appropriate antibiotics for two weeks.

Finegoldia magna (formerly called Peptostreptococcus magnus) is a Gram-positive anaerobic coccus which is increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen. We present a case of F. magna associated non-valvular cardiovascular device-related infection in an 83 year-old male who received a permanent pacemaker for sick sinus syndrome seven weeks prior to his presentation.
