Cetobacterium somerae, a gram-negative anaerobic rod, first identified in the feces of children with autism, also colonize freshwater fish intestinal tract. However there have been no reports of human C. somerae infection. Here, we describe the first case of C. somerae bacteremia in a patient with necrotizing cholecystitis. A 72-year-old male presented to the emergency department with chills, vomiting, and fever and was diagnosed with acute necrotizing cholecystitis. An emergency cholecystectomy was performed and the following day, two sets of blood culture were positive for gram-negative baci

Tazobactam is a new, irreversible inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamases of staphylococci, plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases of the TEM and SHV types found in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species and beta-lactamases of anerobes such as Bacteroides species. Its combination with piperacillin, a broad spectrum ureido-penicillin, would be expected to improve the activity of piperacillin against staphylococci, TEM and SHV beta-lactamase producing Gram negative bacteria and anerobes. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of piperacillin/tazobactam were determined for 1952 individual patient isol

Revival of old antibiotic compounds is a promising strategy to strengthen the antimicrobial armamentarium in the era of increasing resistance and limited development pipelines. To exploit their full potential, their reinvestigation using current standards is needed. We aimed to investigate the in vitro activity of the old antimicrobial agent sodium bituminosulfonate in accordance with the current recommendations for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and to generate susceptibility data reflecting the current epidemiological situation. The in vitro activity of sodium bituminosulfonate w

Diclofenac (DCF), a contaminant of emerging concern, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug widely detected in water bodies, which demonstrated harmful acute and chronic toxicity toward algae, zooplankton and aquatic invertebrates, therefore its removal from impacted water is necessary. DCF is recalcitrant toward traditional treatment technologies, thus, innovative approaches are required. Among them, electrochemical oxidation (EO) has shown promising results. In this research, an innovative multidisciplinary approach is proposed to assess the electrochemical oxidation (EO) of diclofenac fr

Clostridium septicum is a gram-positive, sporulating spindle-shaped rod. Gas gangrene secondary to trauma is not uncommon. However, nontraumatic clostridial infection causing myonecrosis is quite unusual. This is a unique case report of Clostridium septicum bacteremia with two simultaneously evolving metastatic foci of myonecrosis of the left arm and right thigh that developed in a patient with lymphoma when he became granulocytopenic during his hospital course.

UNLABELLED: The use of intensive chemotherapy has improved survival of children with cancer. However, this is associated to severe and maintained neutropenia, increasing risks of severe infections like bacteremia.
AIM: To update information on microorganisms involved in bloodstream infections in cancer patients and their antimicrobial resistance patterns during the last 3 years in our hospital, comparing it with our previous experience and with other Chilean centres.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analysis of positive blood cultures belonging to cancer patients during 2006-2008 registered in the Micr

Kaposi sarcoma inflammatory cytokine syndrome is a rare and fatal malignancy that is challenging to treat. The syndrome appears in individuals who are both human immunodeficiency virus and human herpesvirus 8 positive. The diagnosis of disease is challenging because its presentation mimics sepsis and it has a high mortality rate. A bone marrow biopsy is necessary for definitive diagnosis. This case report discusses a 40-year-old human immunodeficiency virus infection-positive African American male who presented to the emergency department with a chief complaint of left hallux pain in January 2

As to pathogens causing septicaemic diseases, the era of antibiotics has brought about a shift from gram-positive cocci to gram-negative rod-shaped bacilli. 628 septicaemic infections verified by haemocultures were evaluated from January 1, 1960 until March 31, 1975. Septicaemic complications in haemodialyses originated either from infections of the shunt or of the dialytic system, or septicaemia occurred as a result of infusion. In 110 patients presenting myeloid insufficiency, the pathogen ranking first was Pseudomonas aeruginosa, followed by E. coli and Klebsiellae. The entire spectrum of f

Infection by Capnocytophaga canimorsus (C. canimorsus), a Gram-negative rod found in the normal oral flora of canine and feline species and transmitted through bites or scratches, is a rare phenomenon. Infections most commonly occur in alcoholics and immunocompromised patients. In this report, we describe the case of a middle-aged male with a history of alcohol abuse who presented with septic shock and multisystem organ failure following a suspected dog bite. The patient was a 59-year-old Caucasian male with alcohol abuse disorder who initially presented with encephalopathy and lethargy. The p

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence of adverse reactions after corneal transplantation, reported to the Eye Bank Association of America.
METHODS: Incidence of adverse reactions from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2014, was analyzed.
RESULTS: Of the 354,930 transplants performed in the United States, adverse reactions were reported in 494 cases (0.139%). Primary graft failure (PGF) predominated (n = 319; 0.09%) followed by endophthalmitis (n = 99; 0.028%) and keratitis (n = 66; 0.019%). The procedure type predominantly associated with PGF was endothelial keratoplasty (EK) in 56% (n = 180;

Immunocompromised patients and patients undergoing invasive procedures are predisposed to bacterial infections, due to the possibility of micro-organism translocation from their physiological habitat. Infectious complications may occur both in the early and late post-transplantation periods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the proportion as well as susceptibility profiles of obligatory anaerobes in the etiology of infections in patients hospitalized at transplantation wards of a large clinical hospital in Warsaw. A total of 104 strains of obligatory anaerobes derived from patients ho

We present the case of a 63-year-old male patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heavy smoking, and poor dental hygiene, who presented with progressive dyspnea, fever, and a productive cough. The patient was initially evaluated for pneumonia, but a chest radiograph revealed a right-sided pleural effusion. Further analysis of the pleural fluid showed an exudative effusion. Histopathological examination of a pleural biopsy sample identified gram-positive branching filamentous rods with yellow sulfur granules, consistent with a diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis

A woman in her 40s with a history of dental abscess presenting with a 3-month history of nightly fevers, malaise, fatigue and acutely worsening left flank pain was found to have a splenic abscess replacing almost the entire splenic parenchyma on abdominal CT. Abscess aspirate showed Gram-positive rods, and both aerobic and anaerobic cultures grew Cutibacterium acnes (previously Propionibacterium acnes), a common member of the skin microbiome. Prior case reports of C. acnes splenic abscess all involved parental inoculation via needle use. However, in the context of no percutaneous needle exposu…

Actinomyces are Gram-positive, filamentous rods found endogenously as a part of the normal flora and can be acquired exogenously as they are present in the soil. The most common species known to infect humans is Actinomyces israelii. Five forms of the disease have been identified so far, of which the primary infection of the skin is the most uncommon. It is also commonly considered one of the most misdiagnosed diseases. We present a case of a young male diagnosed with primary cutaneous actinomycosis based on a histopathology specimen after multiple failed diagnoses of Madura foot/mycetoma, cut

Gram-positive, non-spore-forming rods (strain 4401292(T)) were isolated from a human blood sample. Based on cellular morphology and the results of biochemical tests, this strain was tentatively identified as belonging to an undescribed species of the genus Actinomyces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison showed that the bacterium was related closely to Actinomyces gerencseriae (95.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Actinomyces israelii (95.2 %), Actinomyces oricola (95.2 %), Actinomyces ruminicola (93.3 %) and Actinomyces dentalis (91.4 %). Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. It is primarily a disease of domestic animals such as cattle, goats, and sheep; but humans can rarely be infected by contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. Our case is a 4-year-old boy who was initially diagnosed as preseptal cellulitis, but later he showed the characteristic anthrax lesions with a black necrotic eschar. Scrapings from the necrotic tissue showed gram positive rods and culture grew Bacillus anthracis. The patient responded to intravenous administration of penicillin G, and the lesions resolve

Two cases of acute hemorrhagic gastric necrosis are presented. The first patient was a 62 yr old man with a past history of chronic gastritis, Parkinson's disease and dementia. The second case was a 25 yr old woman with recent abuse of oral analgesic agents. Both presented with an acute abdomen and peritonitis, and underwent urgent gastrectomy for gastric necrosis with perforation. The first patient died, whereas the second recovered. Histology of the gastrectomy specimens showed severe hemorrhagic transmural gastric necrosis with minimal inflammatory changes. Only occasional Gram positive rod

Nocardiosis is a well-described infection in immunocompromised patients, and has been rarely documented in patients with AIDS. Nocardia asteroides is the most frequently isolated etiologic agent. Rare cases are due to N. brasiliensis and N. otitidiscaviarum. This work describes the first case of nocardiosis in Italy caused by N. otitidiscaviarum in an AIDS patient. A 31 year-old intravenous drug abuser with a diagnosis of full-blown AIDS, presented with high fever and lymphadenitis with a fistula draining copious purulent discharge. Broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was initiated, but the pati
