A rapid-setting and bioactive sealer based on PSC bioactive glass and tristrontium silicate for root canal filling.

Root canal sealers play a crucial role in maintaining intraradicular asepsis by filling microscopic gaps and complex irregularities between the gutta-percha and canal walls, thus ensuring successful endodontic therapy. However, current root canal sealers suffer from slow setting rate and poor bioactivity, increasing the risk of reinfection and treatment failure. Herein, we develop a rapid-setting and bioactive sealer, with tristrontium silicate, bioactive glass and zirconium dioxide powder and phosphate solution as the solid and liquid phases, respectively. Upon mixing, the resultant injectabl

Rheological Properties of Nine Commercially Available Endodontic Sealers by Substrate and Temperature: A Comparative In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate flow, contact angles and capillary penetration of commercially available endodontic sealers by substrate (human root dentin discs [HRD] and gutta-percha [GP]) and by temperature [room (20 °C), or body (37 °C)]. METHODOLOGY: Nine commercially available endodontic sealers were tested using the two-plate method, contact angle calculation (measured on HRD and GP surface-for both temperatures), free-flow, and penetration co-efficiency using a capillary permeability test (in 37 °C). Discs, set-ups and sealers were prepared according to the protocol; speci

Microhardness evaluation of root dentin after using resin sealer solvents.

Background. This study aimed to assess the effects of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and ethyl acetate (EA) on dentin microhardness, used as resin sealer solvents. Methods. Eighty halves of single-rooted teeth were randomly divided into four groups to apply MEK, EA, chloroform, or saline solution. Vickers hardness values were measured for three root levels before and after the direct application of solvents for 5 and 15 minutes or a 1-minute application with ultrasonic agitation. The results were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA, and adjustments were made for comparisons with Bonferroni tests

Clinical validation of a nanodiamond-embedded thermoplastic biomaterial.

Detonation nanodiamonds (NDs) are promising drug delivery and imaging agents due to their uniquely faceted surfaces with diverse chemical groups, electrostatic properties, and biocompatibility. Based on the potential to harness ND properties to clinically address a broad range of disease indications, this work reports the in-human administration of NDs through the development of ND-embedded gutta percha (NDGP), a thermoplastic biomaterial that addresses reinfection and bone loss following root canal therapy (RCT). RCT served as the first clinical indication for NDs since the procedure sites in

Influence of irrigation and intracanal dressing on the healing process of dogs' teeth with apical periodontitis.

Dogs' teeth with apical periodontitis were treated endodontically, Dakin's solution being used in an experimental group as the irrigation solution, and camphorated paramonochlorophenol as an intracanal dressing. For a second group of teeth, the irrigation solution used was physiologic saline, dry cotton only being placed into the pulpal chamber to take the place of an intracanal dressing. In a second visit, overinstrumentation and a new application of the same kind of dressing were performed, the root canals being then filled with gutta-percha cones and zinc oxide-eugenol cement. Other specime

Mineral trioxide aggregate apical plug method for the treatment of nonvital immature permanent maxillary incisors: Three case reports.

Treatment of nonvital immature permanent teeth with calcium-hydroxide is associated with some difficulties such as weakened tooth fracture, root canal reinfection and long treatment time. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apical plug method is an alternative treatment option for open apices, and has gained popularity in the recent times. In this case report, we have attempted to present successful treatment of three maxillary incisors with open apices and periapical lesions with MTA. After preparing the access cavity, the working length was determined. The root canals were irrigated with 2.5% S

Severely altered post-traumatic internal morphology of upper incisors associated with biologic width violation - the combined conservative approach.

This is the report of a case of four upper incisors with multiple internal/external resorptions after a falling accident in the childhood and subsequent violation of the biologic width by incorrect individual coronal restorations. Endodontic orthograde retreatment was performed and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was placed as apical plug and to repair the large internal resorption. In order to re-establish the biologic width, a controlled surgical crown-lengthening procedure was performed. The expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 in the gingival tissue was used as a biomarker for t

Bacteria in experimentally infected cavity preparations.

The presence of bacteria on cavity walls was assessed histologically following experimental infection by inserting soft carious human dentin or guttapercha temporary filings in 40 monkey teeth. Eighty-five infected cavities which had been restored using zinc oxide-eugenol cement (34 teeth), Ca(OH)2 (39 teeth) or amalgam (12 teeth) were also evaluated. Bacteria could regularly be demonstrated in cavities where soft carious human dentin had remained in the cavities for 82 d, but not, or only very rarely, in any of the other series. It was concluded that vital dentin has considerable resistance a

Evidence-based approach to apexification: a literature review and novel clinical protocol.

Apexification, a well-established endodontic treatment for managing immature permanent teeth with pulp necrosis, aims to create a calcified apical barrier to seal communication with the periapical tissues and allow gutta percha placement. This literature review explores advancements of apexification and introduces a systematic, evidence-based procedure for achieving optimal outcomes for apexification procedures. The discussion compares the materials most commonly used in apexification: calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2], mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and Biodentine. Compared with Ca(OH)2, contemp

Management of Discolored Endodontically Treated Maxillary Central Incisors With Nonsurgical Retreatment and Internal Bleaching: A Case Report.

Tooth discoloration in endodontically treated anterior teeth represents a clinically significant problem, particularly in cases with high esthetic expectations. When pain, percussion sensitivity, or radiographic findings accompany such teeth, the existing endodontic status should be reassessed before esthetic treatment. This case report presents the clinical management of a 28-year-old patient who presented with pain, percussion sensitivity, and marked coronal discoloration in previously endodontically treated maxillary central incisors, teeth #11 and #21. After removal of the existing root ca

Reinforcing Effect of Intraradicular Filling Materials in Simulated Immature Mandibular Premolars with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate Apical Barrier: A Weibull Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Incomplete root formation following pulp necrosis requires mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification. Although effective, this treatment does not increase the root thickness, necessitating additional reinforcement. This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of simulated immature mandibular premolars apexified with MTA and reinforced with various materials using Weibull analysis. METHODS: Ninety human mandibular first premolars were prepared to simulate immature teeth. After MTA apexification, teeth were divided into six groups: negative control (intact teeth), pos
