6 cases of endocarditis and 1 of septicemia caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae have been observed in our hospital from 1970 to 1977, as against no case from 1957 to 1969. The mean age of the patients was 46 years. The clinical picture did not differ from that seen in cases of septicemia and endocarditis from other cases. In 4 cases no underlying heart disease was known. In 2 of them, endocarditis developed in the mitral and in 1 in the aortic valve. Of 3 patients with preexisting heart disease, 2 had involvement of the aortic valve and 1 of the mitral valve. Six patients were cured, 2 or pos…

The emergence of resistance to ampicillin and other antibiotics in Haemophilus influenzae has been a relatively recent event. In contrast, drug resistance has been rampant in the Enterobacteriaceae for many years. Ampicillin-resistance in H. influenzae is almost invariably attributable to possession of the TEM (Type III a)beta-lactamase. As is common in other bacteria the gene specifying this enzyme is plasmid-borne in Haemophilus. Some ampicillin-resistant strains of H. influenzae can transfer the TEM beta-lactamase gene to other strains of Haemophilus, to Escherichia coli and to Pseudomonas …

During an endemic appearance of chancroids (26 cases) in Berlin (West) coccobacilli were disclosed in biopsies by electron microscopy. The bacteria were aggregated predominantly in groups in the extracellular space. Their cell wall is approximately 120 A thick and trilaminar as in Gram-negative bacteria. Concerning the cell wall structure and the cytoplasmic composition, the detected coccobacilli are identical to culturally grown Haemophilus ducreyi obtained from chancroids.

Corynebacterium vaginale was recovered from vaginal-cervical swab specimens in 164 of 288 women with leukorrhea and in four of 30 women without signs or symptoms of lower genital tract infection. The amount and character of the leukorrhea observed in association with C. vaginale infection were variable; in typical cases the discharge had the appearance of a thin paste. In a series of 100 patients studied to determine the apparent causes of leukorrhea, noninfectious causes were inferred in seven patients and no cause ascertained in six. Candida or other yeasts, C. vaginale, and Trichomonas vagi

An infant was admitted to hospital with suspected meningitis. Haemophilus influenzae type 'a' was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid (C.S.F.) and blood. Haemophilus meningitis due to types other than type 'b' is rare, and only a few due to type 'a' have so far been recorded. Investigations of the family are included together with a discussion of the implications for the diagnostic bacteriologist.

Hemolytic Haemophilus are rarely isolated in the clinical laboratory, as they do not grow on sheep or human blood-agar alone. On rabbit blood-agar they grow well and are hemolytic, but they grow less well and are not hemolytic on sheep blood-agar with added X and V factors. A survey was made to determine their incidence in pharyngitis. From 28 of 100 sore throats and from 57 of 100 normal throats, only normal bacterial flora were isolated. beta-Streptococci were present in significant numbers in 9 sore and 11 normal throats; staphylococci in 8 sore and 4 normal throats; pneumococci in 20 sore …

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Epididymitis is a common urological condition typically caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, with rare complications like abscess formation. Haemophilus influenzae, usually linked to respiratory infections, is an uncommon cause. This report discusses a 33-year-old male with H. influenzae epididymitis, bacteremia, and a positive NAAT for Chlamydia, presenting a rare and complex clinical scenario. His history of vasectomy adds further intricacy to the case. This highlights the importance of recognizing atypical pathogens, conducting thorough diag…

After a development period of around 13 years, in 1993 the vaccination against infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was introduced into the Dutch National Immunisation Programme. Before the introduction of the vaccination, the burden of disease was high; every year around 700 children acquired an invasive Hib infection, half of whom developed meningitis. Of those children with Hib-related meningitis, 2% died and more than 8% were left with severe residual symptoms. Furthermore, at least one-third of those who recovered developed learning and concentration problems. Hib also…

Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a major cause of mucosal infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In some regions, a strong causal relation links this pathogen with infections of the lower respiratory tract. In the past 20 years, a steady but constant increase has occurred in invasive NTHi worldwide, with perinatal infants, young children, and elderly people most at risk. Individuals with underlying comorbidities are most susceptible and infection is associated with high mortality. β-lactamase producti…

Haemophilus influenzae is a rare cause of soft tissue infection. In this report, we present a case of multifocal necrotizing fasciitis in a healthy adult patient, secondary to Haemophilus influenzae serotype f infection, and we review literature on this rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis.

Haemophilus ducreyi is a well recognised causative agent of genital ulcers and chancroid. We report two unusual cases of non-sexually transmitted H. ducreyi infection leading to chronic lower limb ulcers. Both patients were Australian expatriates visiting Australia from the Pacific Islands--one from Papua New Guinea and the other from Vanuatu.

Haemophilus parasuis, an important swine pathogen, is the aetiological agent of Glässer's disease. It is responsible for cases of polyserositis, meningitis and pneumonia in young pigs. To date, 15 serotypes have been described, although several non-typable isolates are frequently recovered from diseased animals. The pathogenesis of H. parasuis infection is poorly understood. To cause meningitis, H. parasuis would have to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), composed of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMEC). The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of H. parasuis to int…

We have identified two extremely large open reading frames (ORFs) in Haemophilus ducreyi 35000, lspA1 and lspA2, each of which encodes a predicted protein product whose N-terminal half is approximately 43% similar to the N-terminal half of Bordetella pertussis filamentous hemagglutinin (FhaB). To the best of our knowledge, lspA1 (12,500 nucleotides [nt]) and lspA2 (14,800 nt) are among the largest prokaryotic ORFs identified to date. The predicted proteins, LspA1 and LspA2, are 86% identical overall to each other and also have limited amino acid sequence similarity at their N termini to other …
