Hand X-ray metrics for assessing bone health and fracture risk in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked disorder associated with progressive muscle weakness and a high risk of fragility fractures, mainly due to long-term glucocorticoid therapy and reduced mobility. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the standard for bone mineral density (BMD) assessment, but its interpretation is often limited in DMD due to scoliosis and/or surgical instrumentation. The bone health index (BHI), derived from hand X-rays using the BoneXpert® software, may provide a complementary skeletal evaluation. The aim of the study is to evaluate the relation

Bone marrow lesions and collateral ligament lesions are associated in interphalangeal joints with osteoarthritis: The Hand OSTeoArthritis in Secondary care cohort.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether bone activity adjacent to collateral ligaments is present and results in collateral ligament lesions (CLLs) of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints in patients with hand osteoarthritis (OA), and vice versa. METHODS: We used data measured on baseline, year two and year four from the Hand OSTeoArthritis in Secondary care cohort. MR images of the right hand were scored at the radial and ulnar 1/3rd of each joint ("=joint side") for bone marrow lesions (BMLs) and CLLs (=non-visible or non-continuous ligament). Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence inte

Gynoid lean muscle mass as mediator between menarche age, hand grip and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

Numerous clinical studies indicate that reproductive factors and physical performance levels are significant predictors of bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. However, research on the relationship between these factors and body composition remains limited, and the mediating role of body composition in the impact of these factors on BMD remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aims to explore the correlation between reproductive factors, physical performance levels, BMD, and body composition in postmenopausal women, and to further investigate the mediating role of body compos

Split hand/foot malformation with long bone deficiency associated with BHLHA9 gene duplication: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a group of congenital skeletal disorders which may occur either as an isolated abnormality or in syndromic forms with extra-limb manifestations. Chromosomal micro-duplication or micro-triplication involving 17p13.3 region has been described as the most common cause of split hand/foot malformation with long bone deficiency (SHFLD) in several different Caucasian and Asian populations. Gene dosage effect of the extra copies of BHLHA9 gene at this locus has been implicated in the pathogenesis of SHFLD. CASE PRESENTATION: The proband was a female

The cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CNR2) gene is associated with hand bone strength phenotypes in an ethnically homogeneous family sample.

Genetic variants within the CNR2 gene encoding the cannabinoid receptor CB2 have been shown to be associated with osteoporosis and low bone mineral density (BMD) in case-control studies. We now examined the association of polymorphisms in CNR2 with hand bone strength in an ethnically homogeneous healthy family sample of European origin (Chuvashians) living in Russia. We show that non-synonymous CNR2 SNPs are significantly associated with radiographic hand BMD and breaking bending resistance index (BBRI) by two different transmission disequilibrium tests. For both tests highly significant p val

Opportunistic Screening for Bone Demineralization by Whole Body CT in a Red-Handed Howler Monkey (Alouatta belzebul) Under Human Care.

An eight-year-old male red-handed howler monkey (Alouatta belzebul) underwent whole-body computed tomography for gastrointestinal signs. Quantitative CT of the lumbar vertebrae opportunistically revealed severe bone hypoattenuation, demineralization, and deteriorated trabecular architecture. This incidental diagnosis of metabolic bone disease was directly attributed to chronic inadequate management conditions, specifically a severely imbalanced diet and insufficient sunlight exposure in captivity.

Automated Bone Age Assessment and Adult Height Prediction from Pediatric Hand Radiographs via a Cascaded Deep Learning Framework.

Bone age assessment and adult height prediction are essential for evaluating pediatric growth. Traditional methods rely on manual radiographic interpretation, which is subjective, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. This study presents an automated approach using a cascaded deep learning model to assess bone age and predict adult height from pediatric hand radiographs, aiming to improve diagnostic objectivity and efficiency. A total of 8,242 left-hand radiographs from Chinese children were retrospectively collected. Bone age was annotated by experienced pediatric endocrino
