Alcohol-based hand sanitizers: severe intoxication in children.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are an alternative to hand washing with soap and water when water is unavailable. Their use has increased over the last decade. Cases of acute intoxication have been reported in children after accidental ingestion of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, sometimes leading to inebriation, agitation, drowsiness, impaired consciousness, and blood alcohol levels sometimes exceeding 2 g/I. In practice, alcohol-based hand sanitizers should be kept out of reach of children and should only be used when hand washing with soap and water is not possible. The possibility of alcohol

The effects of response effort on safe performance by therapists at an autism treatment facility.

The effects of response effort on safe behaviors (i.e., glove wearing, hand sanitizing, and electrical outlet replacement) exhibited by therapists at an autism treatment center were examined. Participants were exposed to 2 or 3 levels of effort (i.e., high, medium, low) for each dependent variable. Results showed increased safe performance during the low-effort conditions relative to other conditions across all dependent variables for all participants.

CHANGES IN PRE-AND POST-INTERVENTION HAND HYGIENE COMPLIANCE IN ICU ON WHO HANDWASHING POSTERS.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) cause more deaths in the European Union than all other infectious diseases. Hand hygiene (HH) has been considered the most important means of preventing HAIs but HH compliance is generally less than 50%. One of the five steps that the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines identify to be specifically implemented are poster reminders. The aim of this study was to evaluate compliance with HH by healthcare workers before and after an intervention on standardized WHO HH poster reminders. An observational one-month study was conducted in a university hospi

Assessing hand hygiene knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among Guatemalan primary school students in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) is an important practice that prevents transmission of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. However, in resource-limited areas, where water and soap are not always available, it can be difficult to practice HH correctly and at appropriate moments. The purpose of this study was to assess HH knowledge and behaviors among students from six elementary schools in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to identify gaps that could later inform interventions to improve HH. METHODS: We conducted knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) surveys among primary school students during th

Skin barrier function after repeated short-term application of alcohol-based hand rub following intervention with water immersion or occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) is recommended for hand hygiene, and application on dry skin is generally well tolerated. However, hydration of the skin may lead to increased susceptibility to ABHR. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if increased skin hydration changes skin barrier response to ABHR, as compared to application on dry skin. METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in a 3-day experimental setup. Intervention areas on the forearms were exposed to either water immersion or occlusion followed by repeated exposures to ABHR. Skin barrier function was assessed by measurement of

Front-line education by infection preventionists helps reduce Clostridioides difficile infections.

When implementing the latest innovations to reduce health care-associated infections, it is important not to overlook basic infection prevention principles such as hand hygiene, isolation precautions, use of personal protective equipment, and cleaning and low-level disinfection. Like many facilities, we implemented a multifaceted approach to reduce hospital-onset Clostridioides difficile infections. In this paper, we share simple tools that we found helpful in improving infection prevention practices by addressing knowledge gaps among staff, visitors, and patients.

Lactic acid as a major contributor to hand surface infection barrier and its association with morbidity to infectious disease.

Although the surface of the human hands contains high antimicrobial activity, studies investigating the precise components involved and the relationship between natural antimicrobial activity and morbidity in infectious diseases are limited. In this study, we developed a method to quantitatively measure the antimicrobial activity of hand surface components. Using a clinical survey, we validated the feasibility of our method and identified antimicrobial factors on the surface of the human hand. In a retrospective observational study, we compared the medical histories of the participants to asse

Managing Occupational Irritant Contact Dermatitis Using a Two-Step Skincare Regimen Designed to Prevent Skin Damage and Support Skin Recovery.

Occupational irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) affecting the hands is a common and difficult-to-manage condition. Occupations that necessitate contact with harsh chemicals, use of alcohol-based disinfectants, and frequent hand washing elevate the risk of ICD. Management strategies that do not adequately prevent accumulated damage and repair skin, can develop into chronic dermatoses which negatively impact work productivity and quality of life. A 2-step skin-care regimen (Excipial Daily Protection Hand Cream (EP) and Excipial Rapid Repair Hand Cream (ER), Galderma Laboratories, L.P.) has been d

Dermal exposure to chromium in electroplating.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to measure the dermal and respiratory exposure levels of hexavalent chromium during electroplating work. METHODS: Potential dermal exposure of the body was measured with patch samples and actual exposure of hands with hand-wash samples. For comparison, personal air samples were also collected. RESULTS: The exposure varied widely between workers. The range of body and hand exposure to the electroplating solution was 0.17-28.1 mg/h and 0.04-6.37 mg/h, respectively. Hands and lower limbs were the most contaminated body parts. CONCLUSIONS: The results of bre

The efficacy of several new handwashing agents for removing non-transient bacterial flora from hands.

Forty subjects participated in a study of four handwashing agents evaluated for their efficacy in removing non-transient bacteria: 70% isopropanol, 0.05% stabilized iodine, 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, and 1% para-chloro-meta-xylenol. Each subject performed a non-medicated handwash to remove transient flora. Afterwards, three consecutive experimental handwashes were performed using a 10-second contact time, and a fourth handwash employed a 1-minute contact time. Quantitative post-handwash cultures were obtained using the sterile bag technique incorporating an effective agent neutralizer. Signif

[Prevention of infection transfer in dentistry].

Dental team and dentist's office should not represent an infective risk of transfer of bacterial and viral infections for patients. As the number of such infections is on an increase, we have to take additional measures of precaution besides the standard hygienic ones. We will protect ourselves by continuous use of personal protective means (gloves, masks, glasses, caps) and proper hand hygiene, and our patients by use of disposable facilities (plastic glasses, suction-pumps for saliva, injection needles, syringes, paper napkins). After each patient, all accessories and surfaces that were in c

Mobile phone contamination among hospital staff: Focus on MRSA and ESBL-producing bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phones are indispensable tools in hospital practice but may act as sources for healthcare-associated pathogens. Despite global concern, no prior study in Lebanon had assessed the presence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) on healthcare workers' phones. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in a tertiary university hospital, enrolling 166 participants (125 medical staff and 41 administrative controls). Sterile swabs were collected from all phone surfaces, followed by microbiological analysis for meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

[Management and hygiene measures during an outbreak of herpes, influenza, strangles or infections with multidrug resistant bacteria].

The aim of this review is to describe general guidelines of hygiene measures in the horse stable as well as to provide current recommendations for an outbreak of a common infectious disease. General cleanliness, hand hygiene, avoidance of stress, regular deworming, and vaccinations belong to the basic hygiene measures in a horse herd. All new or returning equids should be submitted to a quarantine period as an important prevention measure. Repeated washing and disinfection of hands may prevent spreading of infectious agents to people and horses. The conception of a hygiene plan, including gener

Inactivation of feline calicivirus, a surrogate of norovirus (formerly Norwalk-like viruses), by different types of alcohol in vitro and in vivo.

Hand disinfection is an important measure to prevent transmission of norovirus (formerly called Norwalk-like viruses) from hands or environmental surfaces to other objects. Therefore, three types of alcohol (ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol) were examined for their virus-inactivating properties against feline calicivirus (FCV) as a surrogate for norovirus. Tests were performed as quantitative suspension assays or as in vivo experiments with artificially contaminated fingertips. The in vitro experiments showed that 1-propanol was more effective than ethanol and 2-propanol for the inactivation of FCV:

Bio-coagulants in potable water treatment: a sustainable comparative assessment of Moringa oleifera and chlorine for well-water disinfection.

Groundwater sources such as hand-dug wells remain a primary source of drinking water in many developing regions but are often compromised by turbidity, hardness, and microbial contamination. Conventional disinfection using chlorine is effective but may introduce chemical residuals and disinfection by-products. This study comparatively evaluated the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera seed kernel extract (a natural bio-coagulant with antimicrobial properties) and chlorine (a chemical disinfectant) in improving the physicochemical and microbiological quality of well water. Well water samples were

[Handeczema and occupational health and safety measures].

In recent decades, hand eczema has been seen more frequently in oral care practices. Hand eczema is a difficult problem, especially since the start of the current COVID-19-pandemic, and can lead to absence due to illness at work. The main trio in the development of eczema is predisposition (atopy), irritation and allergy. Irritative contact dermatitis is caused by damage to the skin barrier. In dentistry, this is often caused by frequent contact with water, soaps, disinfectants and the use of gloves. The cause of allergic contact dermatitis is related to the use of various materials in oral ca
