A total of 42 Brucella strains were isolated from animals in Poland in years 2003-2012. Most of them (N=37) originated from wild animals, 3 from cattle, 1 from pig and 1 from sheep. Forty-two recent (1997-1999) Spanish isolates of Francisella tularensis subsp.holarctica were tested in a broth microdilution method for their susceptibilities to 29 antimicrobial agents, including penicillins, cephalosporins, cephamicins, monobactams, penems, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, macrolides, quinolones, chloramphenicol and fosfomycin. The isolates were resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics and susceptible to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and norfloxacin.

The Authors report an unusual case of median cleft of the upper lip with pedunculated skin and muscle contracting mass. About one hundred cases of true median cleft lip have been reported, only six showing a median pedunculated mass. As the embryogenesis of this malformation is still not completely clear, we think that any case with this characteristic has to be described. Besides the usual characteristic of the median "hare lip" this case shows a big egg-like pedunculated mass in which muscular tissue has been found well represented, and a wide incomplete maxillary cleft.

The Authors review the methods of palliative treatment of cardial carcinoma, and particularly report some results obtained through the application of oesophageal endoprostheses (by Celestin and by Haring), following the traction method, in 38 patients. Brucella suis commonly infects swine but occasionally also other animal species and humans. Tularemia is a rare zoonosis. The most common way is ingestion of contaminated meat or water, but the infection may also be acquired by insect bite. Coenurosis is a zoonotic disease of humans caused by the larval stage of Taenia (Multiceps) species. In North America, the adult tapeworm of Taenia (Multiceps) serialis is found in canids.
