The impact of smoking in the home on the health outcomes of non-smoker occupants in the UK.

Smoking in the home remains a key source of exposure to secondhand smoke for non-smokers, particularly since the UK public smoking ban in 2007. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify all UK evidence on the impact of secondhand smoke exposure in the home on health and behavioural outcomes in non-smoker occupants. MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify all relevant UK empirical studies from 2000 to June 2011. A qualitative overview of the evidence is presented. Exposure to secondhand smoke in UK homes was found to be associated with serious negative

Occupational health hazards in veterinary medicine: zoonoses and other biological hazards.

This study describes biological hazards reported by veterinarians working in western Canada obtained through a self-administered mailed questionnaire. The potential occupational hazards included as biological hazards were zoonotic disease events, exposure to rabies, injuries due to bites and scratches, and allergies. Only 16.7% (136/812) of responding veterinarians reported the occurrence of a zoonosis or exposure to rabies in the past 5 years; the most commonly reported event was ringworm. Most bites and scratches (86%) described by 586 veterinarians involved encounters with cats; 81% of the

Working in light vehicles--a review and conceptual model for occupational health and safety.

Occupational light vehicle (OLV) use is the leading cause of work related traumatic deaths in Westernised countries. Previous research has focused primarily on narrow contexts of OLV-use such as corporate fleet vehicles. We have proposed a comprehensive systems model for OLV-use to provide a framework for identifying research needs and proposing policy and practice interventions. This model presents the worker as the locus of injury at the centre of work- and road-related determinants of injury. Using this model, we reviewed existing knowledge and found most studies focused only on company car

[Occupational alergy: a major health hazard among food processing workers].

Food-processing is one of the industries characterized by high exposure to occupational allergens. Exposure to allergens of plant or animal origin is most extensive during food processing, including meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and grain products as well as during production of animal feed and other foodstuffs. Respiratory diseases are the major problem in the food processing industry. It is essential to better recognize the structure of food allergens and mechanisms by which they induce diseases to identify risk factors and health problems which may occur in workers. The aut

Technical, occupational health and environmental aspects of metal degreasing with aqueous cleaners.

Aqueous cleaners used for metal degreasing are detergent formulations containing surfactants (such as linear alkylbenzene sulphonates, alkylphenol ethoxylates or alcohol ethoxylates), builders (such as hydroxides, phosphates or silicates), sequestrants (such as EDTA or NTA), anti-corrosive agents (such as ethanolamines), solvents (such as glycol ethers or d-limonene) and other specialty additives. Generally sold as concentrates, they are typically diluted between 3 and 20 times in water, leading to solutions containing only a few per cent active products. The cleaning efficiency depends on phy

[Management of hyperuricemia in occupational health: with reference to "guidelines for the management of hyperuricemia and gout"].

In 1996, the need for the clinical guidelines for the management of hyperuricemia and gout was proposed of the consensus conference held at the 29th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism (president Yuji Matsuzawa). At the consensus conference, the following announcement was made. 1. Because the majority of patients with hyperuricemia are in the condition of multiple risk factor clustering syndrome, hyperuricemia per se should be counted as one of the typical lifestyle related diseases. 2. Medical management should be directed independently for the treatment

Managing occupational risks for hepatitis C transmission in the health care setting.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant contemporary health problem in the United States and elsewhere. Because it is primarily transmitted via blood, hepatitis C infection presents risks for both nosocomial transmission to patients and occupational spread to health care workers. Recent insights into the pathogenesis, immunopathogenesis, natural history, and treatment of infection caused by this unique flavivirus provide a rationale for the use of new strategies for managing occupational hepatitis C infections when they occur. This article reviews this developing information. Recent

Complementary and alternative therapies in occupational health. Part II--Specific therapies.

Dossey (2001) says, "The nurse serves as a facilitator and helps assist the patient and his or her significant others to be in the best state for healing to take place. Nurses are in a unique position to be instruments of healing at all times." According to Fitch (1999), "A fundamental goal of nursing is to comfort." Complementary and alternative therapies offer many self care and comforting remedies help employees prevent disease and promote healing. Occupational health nurses have the ability to educate employees and offer guidance about CAM therapies; encourage self care management of minor

Occupational allergy to aldehydes in health care workers. Clinical observations. Experiments.

The incidence of allergy to aldehydes (formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, glyoxal) was examined in 280 health care workers suffering from skin lesions. Allergy was diagnosed in 64 (22.8%) patients. The majority of them (85.9%) were sensitive only to 1 aldehyde. Formaldehyde caused allergy slightly more frequently (13.9%) than glutaraldehyde (12.4%). Only 5 (1.9%) patients were sensitive to glyoxal. The irritant effect of aldehydes to the rabbit eye and skin was tested by the Draize and OECD methods. Formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde showed stronger irritant effect than glyoxal. The sensitizing activi

Occupational exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls in electrical workers. II. Health effects.

Health conditions were evaluated in 80 electrical workers exposed for many years to polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures with a 42% mean chlorine content, who had blood PCB concentrations from 41 to 1319 micrograms/kg. The clinical study was based on personal history data, physical examination, and laboratory tests (red cell and leukocyte count; determination of haemoglobin, packed cell volume, bilirubin, serum protein electrophoretic fractions, pseudocholinesterase, AST, ALT, GGT, and OCT). Fifteen workers were found to have skin diseases--chloracne (4), folliculitis (4), oil dermatitis (1

Extension of Occupational Safety and Health Measures for the Protection of Beedi Workers in India.

Beedi workers in India, working in unorganized pockets with poor working conditions, suffer severe health impacts due to long-term exposure to the chemicals involved in beedi-making. Beedi rollers are piece-rated workers who undertake work from home. These workers lack occupational safety and protective mechanisms at home, and establishing accountability of the employers towards these workmen has also been challenging. Legislations like the Beedi and Cigar Workers (Condition of Employment) Act, 1966 (BCWA), and the Beedi Workers Welfare Fund Act, 1971 (BWWFA), have addressed various aspects of
