Geriatric grand rounds: hearing impairment and functional independence.

Hearing loss is a commonly encountered impairment in the elderly. It can profoundly affect physical, psychosocial and cognitive function. In addition to the actual hearing loss, other factors contribute to the hearing handicap experienced by older persons. These include difficulty in understanding speech in noisy situations, difficulty in supplementing hearing with visual information, and the slowing of cognitive and psychologic processes. Many forms of amplification are available and can be very useful in reversing much of the functional impairment associated with hearing loss. A comprehensiv

Incidence and Severity of Carboplatin-Associated Hearing Loss in Children With Cancer Assessed by the SIOP Boston 2012 Ototoxicity Criteria.

BACKGROUND: Platinum-based chemotherapy is known to cause severe and debilitating hearing loss, but unlike cisplatin, the true incidence of carboplatin-induced hearing loss remains unclear. We evaluated functional hearing outcomes in children receiving carboplatin to determine the incidence and severity of ototoxicity. PROCEDURE: We identified a large cohort of children with cancer treated with carboplatin and graded their audiograms using the SIOP Boston ototoxicity scale. Patients with inadequate audiological follow-up, prior hearing loss, or exposure to cisplatin were excluded. Fisher's ex

Auditory-limbic-cerebellum interactions and cognitive impairments in noise-induced hearing loss.

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the neural substrate of hearing loss-related central nervous system in rats and its correlation with cognition. METHODS: We identified the neural mechanism for these debilitating abnormalities by inducing a bilateral hearing loss animal model using intense broadband noise (122 dB of broadband noise for 2 h) and used the Morris water maze test to characterize the behavioral changes at 6 months post-noise exposure. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted to clarify disrupted functional network using bilateral auditory cortex (ACx) as a seed.

Cognitive effects of untreated unilateral and bilateral hearing loss in midlife: Preliminary evidence.

Hearing loss has been identified as a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, although most of the evidence is derived from studies in older adults. Identifying such cognitive impairment in midlife is crucial, as it serves as a baseline for understanding changes in cognitive abilities that occur later in life. The present study aimed to compare the cognitive performance of age- and socioeconomic status-matched middle-aged adults with normal hearing and those with untreated hearing loss. This study included 48 participants aged 40-65 years, comprising 24 adults with normal he

Reversible conductive hearing loss: restored activity in the central auditory system.

The effect of a reversible, unilateral hearing loss on 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake in the central auditory system was studied using young gerbils. All animals had a unilateral conductive hearing loss (CHL), induced by atresia, on postnatal day 21 (P21). One week later, on P28, animals had their atresia repaired (CHL/R), or not repaired (CHL/NR), and CHL/NR animals entered the 2-DG experiments. CHL/R animals were allowed a 1-week period of restored binaural hearing experience prior to entering 2-DG experiments on P35. Animals in each group were injected with 2-DG and exposed to ambient sounds

Molecular diagnose of a large hearing loss population from China by targeted genome sequencing.

Hereditary hearing loss is genetically heterogeneous, with diverse clinical manifestations. Here we performed targeted genome sequencing of 227 hearing loss related genes in 1027 patients with bilateral hearing loss and 520 healthy volunteers with normal hearing to comprehensively identify the molecular etiology of hereditary hearing loss in a large cohort from China. We obtained a diagnostic rate of 57.25% (588/1027) for the patients, while 4.67% (48/1027) of the patients were identified with uncertain diagnoses. Of the implicated 35 hearing loss genes, three common genes, including SLC26A4(2

A study to evaluate the burden of hearing loss and its correlation with risk factors among high-risk infants at a teaching institution, Jaipur.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a global issue of hearing disability and early detection and rehabilitation of hearing loss are important for the development of speech and language skills in hearing-impaired infants. There are multiple risk factors that aid in hearing loss but some are potential factors that contribute toward hearing loss in infants. The aim of this study was to assess the burden of hearing loss and its correlation with risk factors among high-risk infants at a teaching institution in Jaipur, Rajasthan. METHOD: This study was carried out after approval of institutional ethics c

Pathophysiological processes underlying hidden hearing loss revealed in Kcnt1/2 double knockout mice.

Presbycusis is a prevalent condition in older adults characterized by the progressive loss of hearing due to age-related changes in the cochlea, the auditory portion of the inner ear. Many adults also struggle with understanding speech in noise despite having normal auditory thresholds, a condition termed "hidden" hearing loss because it evades standard audiological assessments. Examination of animal models and postmortem human tissue suggests that hidden hearing loss is also associated with age-related changes in the cochlea and may, therefore, precede overt age-related hearing loss. Neverthe

Anatomical correlates of functional recovery in the avian inner ear following aminoglycoside ototoxicity.

Tucci and Rubel have demonstrated functional recovery of the chick cochlea following aminoglycoside ototoxicity. The cochleae of these same animals were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to further understand this recovery process. Hatchling chicks were given daily doses of gentamicin for 10 days. Auditory-evoked potential measurements and examination of the cochlea by scanning electron microscopy were performed after survival periods of 5 days to 20 weeks. After 5 days of gentamicin exposure, there was near complete basal hair cell loss associated with a high-frequency h

Investigating the causal relationship between inflammation and multiple types of hearing loss: a multi-omics approach combining Mendelian randomization and molecular docking.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss affects over 10% of the global population. Inflammation is a key factor in hearing loss caused by noise, infection, and aging, damaging various hearing-related tissues (e.g., spiral ligament, stria vascularis). Mendelian randomization (MR) can help identify potential causal relationships and therapeutic targets. METHODS: We conducted MR analyses on 91 inflammatory proteins (n = 14,824) and genome-wide association study results for various hearing loss types in European ancestry populations, including sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL; ncases = 15,952, ncontrols = 196,5

Practices and attitudes related to hearing: a survey of executives.

Executives were surveyed about their hearing health-care practices and attitudes toward hearing loss (N = 140, mean age = 49, number of males = 133). In regard to hearing health-care practices, about one-third of the executives had not had a hearing test during the past 5 years. Fifty-one percent of the executives reported that a hearing test was conducted or recommended during their annual physical examinations. Twenty (14%) of the executives rated their hearing as fair or poor, but only two of them wore hearing aids. Executives who reported poorer hearing were less likely to have had recent

Summating potentials in Menière's disease.

The summating potentials in response to tonebursts of 2, 4, and 8 kHz were studied in a group of 112 patients diagnosed as having Menière's disease, and the results were compared with recordings from 27 normal human ears. Subdivision of the Menière ears into a low-threshold (threshold less than 50 dB HL) and a high-threshold group (greater than 50 dB HL) proved to be functional in relation to the behaviour of the SP. The data of the low-threshold Menière group did not differ significantly from the normal data, whereas the high-threshold Menière group showed significantly smaller summating pote

TSPEAR variants are primarily associated with ectodermal dysplasia and tooth agenesis but not hearing loss: A novel cohort study.

Biallelic loss-of-function variants in the thrombospondin-type laminin G domain and epilepsy-associated repeats (TSPEAR) gene have recently been associated with ectodermal dysplasia and hearing loss. The first reports describing a TSPEAR disease association identified this gene is a cause of nonsyndromic hearing loss, but subsequent reports involving additional affected families have questioned this evidence and suggested a stronger association with ectodermal dysplasia. To clarify genotype-phenotype associations for TSPEAR variants, we characterized 13 individuals with biallelic TSPEAR varian
