Diagnostic performance evaluation of ParaEgg for identifying intestinal helminthiasis: A comparative study with conventional copromicroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminthiasis remains a significant public health concern in Bangladesh, affecting both humans and animals. Conventional copromicroscopic methods, though widely used, often lack sensitivity, particularly in areas with low prevalence and intensity of infection. ParaEgg, a new diagnostic tool, has been developed to improve the efficiency of copromicroscopic detection. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ParaEgg in detecting intestinal helminth infections in humans and dogs compared to commonly used traditional methods. METHODS: A cross-sectional stu…

A 14-year review (2007-2020) of helminthiasis epidemiology in a hospital in Southern Madrid, Spain.

PURPOSE: Vast majority of helminth diseases remain neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), causing significant morbidity. The widespread and periodic distribution of antiparasitic drugs, remains the cornerstone for controlling these diseases. In Spain, most helminthiasis cases are imported, and suspicion and diagnosis have become increasingly important. Our primary objective is to present the epidemiological landscape of helminthiasis diagnoses within our facility, while also detailing the demographic characteristics of the affected population. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at the …

Accessibility of Soil-transmitted Helminthiasis Control Strategies in Selected Indigenous People Communities in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous peoples (IPs) remain vulnerable to soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) due to limited access to sanitary toilets, clean water, quality health education, and services. The World Health Organization recommends periodic mass drug administration (MDA) of anthelminthics, health education, and improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) as control strategies to reduce morbidities caused by STH in target populations such as school-age children (SAC).This paper complements the published results of the parasitological survey (prevalence and intensity of STH) conducted …

Knowledge and practices of parents of school age children towards Helminthiasis and malaria in northwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Helminthiasis and malaria prevail in developing countries including Ethiopia, where they claim lives, retard physical and mental growth, reduce productivity and contain economic growth. Implementing helminthiasis and malaria control strategies require adequate knowledge and practices of the affected communities. Knowledge and practices of parents of school age children was assessed in relation to risk of child infection with Helminthiasis and malaria. METHODS: A total of 398 parents of school age children attending Maksegnit Number Two Elementary School from September 2020 to June…

Zinc status or supplementation and its relation to soil-transmitted helminthiasis in children: A systematic review.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) parasitic infection is known as one of the most common infections around the world affecting more than a quarter of the world's population. The relationship between STH infections and micronutrient deficiencies are closely related and often coexist among the affected population. The study, therefore, aimed to summarise the available literature focusing on the effect of zinc status/deficiency or supplementation on STH infection or reinfection in children. For this purpose, we adopted a systematic approach and searched the existing literature on PubMed, Scopus,

Geo-helminthiasis among migrants in Sicily: a possible focus for re-emerging neurocysticercosis in Europe.

A dramatic increasing immigration flow was recorded in Europe during the last years. Only in Sicily 120,239 people arrived in 2014. Immigrants may carry neglected tropical diseases endemic in their origin countries. The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of geo-helminthiasis, and in particular of intestinal taeniasis, in a sample of migrants hosted in a large asylum seeker centre in the province of Catania. A stool sample was obtained from all the enrolled subjects and a coproparasitological examination was performed. Out of the 274 enrolled subjects (249 men; mean age 26.4 ± 6.2),…

Parasitological impact of 2-year preventive chemotherapy on schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are among the neglected tropical diseases in Africa. A national control program for these diseases was initiated in Uganda during March 2003. Annual treatment with praziquantel and albendazole was given to schoolchildren in endemic areas and to adults in selected communities where local prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni in schoolchildren was high. METHODS: The impact of the treatment program was monitored through cohorts of schoolchildren and adults. Their infection status with S. mansoni and STH was determined by parasitolo…

[Participant survey in the intervention of intestinal helminthiasis transmission (satellite city of Paranoá -- Federal District].

This work was developed in the Paranoá city town of the Federal District of Brazil. It used techniques of participative research with the aim of reducing intestinal helminths transmission in a group of children at nutritional risk. The family nucleus, that is, parents, children and other relatives living together in the same house, was used as reference for this research. All steps of the work were followed simultaneously by technical and educative actions. The technical actions were related to faecal examinations and medication. The educative process, stimulated critical analysis and reflecti

[Epizootiology and prevention of helminthiasis of game animals in Czechoslovakia and its relationship to the parasitic diseases of cattle].

Decades of surveying helminthic diseases in domestic and free-living ruminants in the CSR evidenced extensive infestation by lungworms, gastrointestinal nematodes, and liver flukes. In some years, parasitic invasion caused up to 50% of total losses of roe deer. Programmes to control systematically dictyocaulosis and fascioliasis were carried out with cattle and sheep in 1970-1980, with deer in 1981-1985. In the eighties, the incidence of F. hepatica in cattle and sheep dropped to less than 1%, of D. viviparus in cattle to 0.2%; no D. filaria is to be encountered in sheep presently. The share o

The measurement of Ascaris suum protein by radioimmunoassay in sera from patients with helminthiasis and with gastrointestinal diseases.

In this study, we have developed a reliable radioimmunoassay (RIA) for Ascaris suum protein (Asp) and have measured the serum concentration of Asp in control subjects and in patients with helminthiasis and a variety of gastrointestinal diseases. The cross-reactivities of Asp antibody with other helminth worm antigens were also measured by RIA. Ascaris lumbricoides contained approximately the same amount of Asp antigenic substance as did Ascaris suum. Toxocara canis had a high concentration of a substance partially cross-reactive with Asp. Small amounts of substance cross-reacting with Asp were…

Oxantel-pyrantel in various regimens for the treatment of soil transmitted helminthiasis in rural and urban communities.

204 individuals from a rural community were given a single dose of oxantel-pyrantel at 15mg/kg bodyweight and if still infected, 20mg/kg bodyweight, with cure rates of 100%, 53% and 71% for ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infection, respectively. From an urban community, 124 patients were given the same drug either as 15mg/kg bodyweight given twice in one day, with an interval of about 12 hours, or 20mg/kg bodyweight given daily for 2 days. Cure rates obtained were 100% in both groups for ascariasis; 89.2% of those given the first regimen were cured of trichuriasis compared with 71.2% of

An intuitive sampling framework for setting-specific decision-making in soil-transmitted helminthiasis control programs.

BACKGROUND: We recently developed a general egg count framework to support cost-efficient survey design choices to inform soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) control programs. Yet, the interpretation and the application was not always intuitive for program managers. METHODS: We first adapted the existing framework to make the interpretation of risks of incorrect decision making more intuitive and to allow for prior information. Then, we assessed the impact of the allowable risk of incorrect decision-making and prior information on the required sample size. Finally, we determined the most cos…
