Hairy cell leukemia patients treated with 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine or 2-deoxycoformicin achieve a very high number of therapeutic responses. After complete remission, i.e. minimal residual disease, we cannot demonstrate the disease activity, splenomegaly, or lymphadenopathy; moreover, there comes to normalization of hemoglobin concentration, leukocyte count, and platelet count. No leukemic cells in peripheral blood or bone marrow smears can be seen with the use of staining techniques. They can be demonstrated immunohistochemically in decalcified trephine bone marrow biopsies with the use of DBA.

Prognostic factors were examined in 31 patients with hairy cell leukemia seen at M. D. Anderson Hospital. BACKGROUND: Vasa previa is a rare but potentially dangerous fetal condition that may occur during pregnancy. Ideally, all cases such cases are detected antenatally, but many present as late vaginal hemorrhaging. At the current time, there is no test for fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in general use.
METHODS: A modified method of identifying HbF is presented. Five milliliters of 0.14 M NaOH was combined with 50 microl of a mixture of fetal and maternal blood. After 2 min, it was judged if the solution still had a red tone or not. The sensitivity of this method for detecting HbF was assessed.
