Alginate-immobilized exopolymeric substances from bacteria for Lead (Pb) removal: biosorption and reusability studies.

In this study, exopolymeric substances (EPS) from Bacillus cereus were immobilized in alginate to form alginate-EPS beads. The surface characteristics of the alginate-EPS beads were examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The mechanisms of Pb removal was determined based on equilibrium and kinetic models. Packed-bed biosorption studies using Pb solutions (750 mg L-1 concentration) evaluated their efficacy for Pb uptake and removal, under the influence of initial pH of metal solution and the size of biosorbents. The reusability of th

Synergistic nanogel therapy for dry and nutrient-deficient wounds: biotin-loaded acacia-alginate hydrogel enhances tissue regeneration and reduces inflammation.

Dry, nutrient-poor wounds often heal slowly because inflammation persists and tissue repair is impaired. This study developed a biotin-loaded acacia-alginate nanogel (BOT-ACC-SA) to improve biotin's poor water solubility, limited skin penetration, and therapeutic performance in wound healing. Biotin was first adsorbed onto acacia gum and then incorporated into sodium alginate nanogels using sonication-assisted self-assembly. The formulation was thoroughly characterized by thermal, spectroscopic, crystallographic, microscopic, particle-size, and rheological analyses. The optimized nanogel showe

Analysis of the Anti-inflammatory Effects of a Delivery System Based on Alginate Hydrogels Enriched with Bioactive Compounds from Marine Sponge Dysidea robusta.

Articular inflammatory processes are common in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. Standard therapy relies on oral anti-inflammatory drugs, which can cause systemic side effects with prolonged use. This has driven the search for natural alternatives and safer drug delivery systems. Intra-articular hydrogels enriched with bioactive compounds represent a promising approach, providing localized release of therapeutic molecules and reducing adverse effects. This study developed and characterized alginate (ALG)-based hydrogels enriched with bioactive compounds from the ma

Technique for Rapidly Forming Networks of Microvessel-Like Structures.

Modeling organ-blood barriers through the inclusion of microvessel networks within in vitro tissue models could lead to more physiologically accurate results, especially since organ-blood barriers are crucial to the normal function, drug transport, and disease states of vascularized organs. Microvessel networks are difficult to form, since they push the practical limits of most fabrication methods, and it is difficult to coax vascular cells to self-assemble into structures larger than capillaries. Here, we present a method for rapidly forming networks of microvessel-like structures using sacri

Microencapsulation of Parathyroid Cells for the Treatment of Hypoparathyroidism.

Cell encapsulation is an alternative to avoid rejection of grafted tissue, thus bringing an interesting alternative in cell therapy. It is particularly relevant in ailments where only the implant of small quantities of tissues is warranted. In such circumstances, the use of immunosuppressive therapy in patients implanted with tissues from donors is debatable, yet unavoidable at present in order to prevent rejection and/or sensitization of the host to the tissue, in turn jeopardizing the success of successive implants. Hence, a new line of thought, which aims to provide an immunoprivileged site

Design and characterization of chitosan-alginate microspheres for ocular delivery of azelastine.

The use of mucoadhesive biopolymers is one of the best approaches to prolong the drug residence inside the cul-de-sac, consequently increasing the bioavailability. Thus, the focus of this work was to develop mucoadhesive microspheres to overcome the limitations of ocular drug delivery. The chitosan-sodium alginate microspheres of azelastine hydrochloride were fabricated using modified ionotropic gelation technique. The particle size, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency and drug release kinetics were evaluated and characterized by SEM, FT-IR, DSC, in vitro mucoadhesion and in vivo study. The

Zenker's diverticulum complicating achalasia: a 'cup-and-spill' oesophagus.

A 72-year-old woman presented with long-standing gastro-oesophageal reflux, regurgitation of swallowed food and worsening cervical dysphagia. Fluoroscopic barium oesophagography revealed a posterolateral pharyngeal pouch (Zenker's diverticulum (ZD)) complicating a 'cup and spill' oesophageal deformity with a smoothly tapered segment at the gastro-oesophageal junction. CT and high-resolution manometry confirmed that the underlying abnormality was a massively dilated oesophagus with aperistalsis and pan-oesophageal pressurisation, consistent with a diagnosis of oesophageal achalasia (type II). Effects of cryopreservation and hypothermic storage on cell viability and enzyme activity in recombinant encapsulated cells overexpressing alpha-L-iduronidase.

Here, we show the effects of cryopreservation and hypothermic storage upon cell viability and enzyme release in alginate beads containing baby hamster kidney cells overexpressing alpha-L-iduronidase (IDUA), the enzyme deficient in mucopolysaccharidosis type I. In addition, we compared two different concentrations of alginate gel (1% and 1.5%) in respect to enzyme release from the beads and their shape and integrity. Our results indicate that in both alginate concentrations, the enzyme is released in lower amounts compared with nonencapsulated cells. Alginate 1% beads presented increased levels

Managing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in the older patient.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) in older patients presents particular problems for the clinician. Older patients may present with complications rather than with symptoms, which may be less marked than in younger patients. Extraoesophageal symptoms are also more common in this group, and this may lead to confusion over the exact diagnosis. The increased likelihood of co-pathologies and concomitant medication complicate diagnosis and management further. GORD tends to be more severe for any level of symptom severity in the older patient. Erosive oesophagitis is more common among older pe

Motility and fertility of alginate encapsulated boar spermatozoa.

Ejaculated boar spermatozoa are vulnerable to cold shock. Prolonged storage of boar spermatozoa at low temperatures reduces survival rate, resulting in a bottleneck for the extension of artificial insemination in pig husbandry. This study evaluated whether alginate microencapsulization processing can improve the longevity of boar spermatozoa stored at 5 degrees C and the fertility of microencapsulated spermatozoa in vivo. Sperm-rich fraction semen from three purebred boars were concentrated and microencapsulated using alginate at 16-18 degrees C, and then were stored at 5 degrees C. Following

Combination of cimetidine and alginic acid: an improvement in the treatment of oesophageal reflux disease. Cooperative Oesophageal Group.

A new chewable tablet containing cimetidine 200 mg and alginic acid 500 mg, at a dosage of one tablet four times daily, was compared in a 12 week randomised study with the standard dosage of cimetidine (400 mg four times daily) in the management of oesophageal reflux disease. The dose of cimetidine continued unchanged throughout the study but the dose of the combination drugs could be increased after six weeks to two tablets four times a day if response was unsatisfactory. A total of 312 patients had data suitable for analysis. Sixty three per cent of those on the combination tablet completed

Glycosaminoglycans in fluid aspirates from odontogenic cysts.

Glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans were analysed in keratinizing and nonkeratinizing odontogenic cyst fluids. Hyaluronic acid showed the highest incidence and abundance amongst the glycosaminoglycans detected. Appreciable amounts of chondroitin-4-sulphate were also observed, particularly in the dental cysts, with lesser amounts of the other glycosaminoglycans. Heparan sulphate showed a higher incidence and abundance in the keratocyst than the other cysts, whilst chondroitin-6-sulphate could not be detected in any of the cysts. A considerable proportion of the glycosaminoglycans of the fluids

Prevention of Polyglycolic Acid-Induced Peritoneal Adhesions Using Alginate in a Rat Model.

Postoperative intra-abdominal or intrathoracic adhesions sometimes cause significant morbidity. We have designed three types of alginate-based treatments using strongly cross-linked (SL), weakly cross-linked (WL), and non-cross-linked (NL) alginate with calcium gluconate. In rat experiments, we compared the antiadhesive effects of the three types of alginate-based treatments, fibrin glue treatment (a standard treatment), and no treatment against adhesions caused by polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh (PGA-induced adhesions). The antiadhesive materials were set on the PGA sheet fixed on the parietal p

Gastroesophageal reflux in pregnancy: a systematic review on the benefit of raft forming agents.

The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms in pregnancy is very high, up to 80%, with a maximum peak during the third trimester. Together with lifestyle modifications, antacids and antisecretive agents, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs), are commonly prescribed in non-pregnant, adult population. In certain Countries these drugs are not allowed in or are allowed only during the late stages of pregnancy. Alginate-based formulations have been used for the symptomatic treatment of heartburn for decades, as they usually contai
