An ancient scourge: the end of dracunculiasis in Egypt.

This paper addresses the question of when guinea worm disease was last found in Egypt, and how written sources from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which mention the disease should be evaluated. This enquiry is relevant to the global eradication campaign now in progress, and the need for countries in which dracunculiasis was once present to prepare a certification of eradication. Sudan, the country which has the largest number of cases today, is Egypt's southern neighbour. Because of the nature of the disease (in endemic areas it is most common among poor, rural people), it may not have

[Homesick in Capricorn's Woods. Remarks on the 300th anniversary of the dissertation on nostalgia and the 700th anniversary of "dolor de dampno"].

Nostalgia (homesickness) was introduced to the domain of medicine only in 1688, but mental suffering corresponding to it was described already in ancient poetry; in Central Europe, it appeared for the first time 700 years ago in the Chronicle of the Zdár monastery, written by Henry the Woodsculptor (= von Heimburg?). In the woodlands between Moravia, Lower Austria and Bohemia, mentioned by Ptolemaios under the Celtic name "Gabreta" (wild goats' wood, cf. Irish "gabrach"), also other behaviour patterns reflecting unusual mental anchorage patterns of the inhabitants appeared between the 13th and

[A contribution to the history of the treatment of middleface-injuries (author's transl)].

The first descriptions of facial injuries, especially about hurts of the nose, their diagnosis and their treatment are found in the writings of the old cultures. There are already corresponding references in the Papyrus Edwin Smith and in the Papyrus Ebers. There exist descriptions of the surgery of India and in the papers of Hippocrates, which contribute details to these injuries and their treatments. Here it is pointed to the splinting of the septum by inserting open tubes. A careful bandage, respecting the rebuilding of the nose, and the reposition of lower jaw fractures are remarked. In th

Professionalism: An Archaeology.

For more than two decades, classes on "professionalism" have been the dominant platform for the non-technical socialization of medical students. It thus subsumes elements of previous foundation courses in bioethics and "medicine and society" in defining the appropriate relation between practitioners, patients, and society-at-large. Despite its importance, there is, however, no clear definition of what "professionalism" entails or the manner in which it serves various purported goals. This essay reviews, first, the historical role of the vocational practitioner in society, and second, the intro

The Panoti and some other fantastic forms of macrotia.

"He had the form of a human being... His ears were as long as clusters of dates or elephant ears, and they covered his shoulders" ("The thousand and one nights", Sinbad the sailor, 546th night, circa IXth century AD). "About his ears, I shall tell you all the truth: They have the capacity of about 300 liters. When he is surprised by wind or tempest, He can immediately cover his head. He does not frighten the water at all, Even if it rained enormously during one full month. The other ear, he uses as a shield. It is hanging in front of his face up to his baldric. Thanks to his ears, he does not

Infectious diarrhea in history.

Throughout history, infectious diarrhea has been associated with crowding, poor sanitation, and war. Although descriptions of infectious diarrhea exist in the earliest records of civilization, effective measures for prevention were not widely or consistently used until the modern era of active public health promotion. Advances in the understanding of etiologies and therapies have revolutionized prognosis; however, constant vigilance against lapses in public health is necessary to prevent outbreaks of disease.

Treatment of idiopathic clubfoot: an historical review.

Idiopathic clubfoot, one of the most common problems in pediatric orthopaedics, is characterized by a complex three-dimensional deformity of the foot. The treatment of clubfoot is controversial and continues to be one of the biggest challenges in pediatric orthopaedics. This controversy is due in part to the difficulty in measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of different treatment methods. We believe the heart of the debate is a lack of understanding of the functional anatomy of the deformity, the biological response of young connective tissue to injury and repair, and their combined eff

Early methods for the surveillance and control of glanders in Europe.

From the many existing documents on the history of glanders, it is possible to detail the practical measures adopted for disease surveillance and control from antiquity until the 19th century, principally in European countries. Surveillance is based on clinical diagnosis, post-mortem examination, animal inoculation and knowledge of the conditions under which infection occurred: aetiology, pathogenesis, susceptible species, virulent material, mode of infection, incubation period, etc. The historical data are assembled and compared, with comments on each of these points. Control is based on the

[The Comparison of disease names of Atrophic Rhinitis between TCM and Western Medicine with TCM concept filiation].

Withered Nose (Bi Gao) is a modern name for dry nose drawn from classical traditional Chinese medicine texts, for the condition atrophic rhinitis. Based on these texts before the Tang Dynasty, dry nose and its relevant symptoms were not identified as a single disease. Withered Nose was recorded in the Huangdi's Inner Canon (Huangdi Neijing) and Classic of Difficult Issues (Nan Jing), but referred to external nasal desiccation due to acute heat illness, having nothing to do with atrophic rhinitis. The symptoms such as "dry nose without nasal discharge" and "dry nose " were reduced to independen

The use of nano-particles to produce iridescent metallic effects on ancient ceramic objects.

Nano-sized materials have been often used in the past to realize objects with particular characteristics. One of the most outstanding examples is represented by luster pottery, showing shining surfaces with particular optical properties. Luster was one of the most sophisticated technique for the decoration of majolicas. It consists of a thin metallic film containing silver, copper and other substances, like iron oxide and cinnabar, applied in a reducing atmosphere on a previously glazed ceramic. In such a way, beautiful iridescent reflections of different colours (in particular gold and ruby-r

Extramasticatory dental wear reflecting habitual behavior and health in past populations.

In skeletal remains, teeth are valuable sources of information regarding age, diet, and health. Dental wear is especially helpful in reconstructions of dietary patterns in populations of varying subsistence. In past societies, teeth have also been used as "a third hand" or as a "tool." The present article examines this type of dental wear and traits attributed to habitual behavior during prehistoric and historic times. Terminology and classification of habitual dental wear are described mainly by appearance, for instance, notching, grooving, cuts, scrapes, and polished surfaces, and their char

Cerebral localization in antiquity.

Fragments of neurology can be found in the oldest medical writings in antiquity. Recognizable cerebral localization is seen in Egyptian medical papyri. Most notably, the Edwin Smith papyrus describes hemiplegia after a head injury. Similar echoes can be seen in Homer, the Bible, and the pre-Hippocratic writer Alcmaeon of Croton. While Biblical writers thought that the heart was the seat of the soul, Hippocratic writers located it in the head. Alexandrian anatomists described the nerves, and Galen developed the ventricular theory of cognition whereby mental functions are classified and localize
