Prevalence of school related violence in seven countries: A cross-sectional survey.

Violence against children in schools harms the affected children, limits their learning and educational attainment, and extends its harms to families and the broader communities. However, to date, comparable cross-country data on violence against children in schools has not been available. We utilize the Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS) to estimate school-related violence against children in seven countries (Honduras, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia). Leveraging the unique comparability of the surveys, we are able to estimate both physical and sexual viol

Unveiling the secret of ancient Maya masons: Biomimetic lime plasters with plant extracts.

Ancient Maya produced some of the most durable lime plasters on Earth, yet how this was achieved remains a secret. Here, we show that ancient Maya plasters from Copan (Honduras) include organics and have a calcite cement with meso-to-nanostructural features matching those of calcite biominerals (e.g., shells). To test the hypothesis that the organics could play a similar toughening role as (bio)macromolecules in calcium carbonate biominerals, we prepared plaster replicas adding polysaccharide-rich bark extracts from Copan's local trees following an ancient Maya building tradition. We show that

Aedes (Ochlerotatus) amateuri Ortega and Zavortink (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Madrean Sky Islands of Arizona, USA: a new country record.

The mosquito community of the Madrean Sky Islands of southeastern Arizona is diverse and distinct with several species that are endemic or at their northern distributional limits. We collected mosquitoes across many of southeastern Arizona's Sky Island mountain ranges. Here, we present new collection records supported by morphological and molecular evidence that indicate the presence of Aedes (Ochlerotatus) amateuri in at least two Sky Islands ranges, the Santa Rita Mountains and the Dragoon Mountains. Aedes amateuri was described in 2019, previously known only from the type locality in Nuevo

The COVID-19 Impact on the Trends in Yellow Fever and Lassa Fever Infections in Nigeria.

Lassa fever (LF) and yellow fever (YF) belong to a group of viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs). These viruses have common features and damages the organs and blood vessels; they also impair the body's homeostasis. Some VHFs cause mild disease, while some cause severe disease and death such as in the case of Ebola or Marburg. LF virus and YF virus are two of the most recent emerging viruses in Africa, resulting in severe hemorrhagic fever in humans. Lassa fever virus is continuously on the rise both in Nigeria and neighboring countries in West Africa, with an estimate of over 500,000 cases of LF,

Medical populism and the politics of dengue epidemics in the Global South.

With millions of cases and thousands of deaths every year in Asia and Latin America, dengue fever continues to be of global public health significance. This article uses the concept of 'medical populism' to analyse the political construction of the 2019 dengue epidemics in Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Honduras. Through this framework, we examine the narratives of these outbreaks by reconstructing how political actors simplified the discourse, spectacularised the crises, offered multiple knowledge claims, and forged divisions between the people and 'dangerous others'. Taken together, our ca

Central America in Transition: From Maize to Wheat Challenges and Opportunities.

The Central American countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama are in transition from a dietary culture based mainly on maize to a wheat-containing diet. Several other changes are occurring, such as a decrease of parasitic and infectious diseases. The environmental changes permit a prediction of an increase of celiac disease and other autoimmune diseases such as type I diabetes and thyroid disease in these genetically heterogeneous countries. At present, celiac disease and gluten-related disorders are considered to be of no relevance at the level of public

[Subtypes of dengue virus serotypes 2, 3 and 4 isolated in Santander District, Colombia].

Virus serotypes 2, 3 and 4 that had circulated in Santander District, Colombia in the period 1998-2004 were analyzed. Identifying the subtype of a dengue virus serotype is a useful tool for surveillance of severe risk factors because the strain potential to cause hemorrhagic dengue makes the difference among them. Simultaneous sequence amplification technique known as restriction site specific-polymerase chain reaction (RSS-PCR) was used to determine the subtype by comparing the electrophoretic pattern of the local isolate to the reference virus. Virus serotype 2 corresponded to subtype A simi

Does the reuse of PET bottles during solar water disinfection pose a health risk due to the migration of plasticisers and other chemicals into the water?

Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a simple, effective and inexpensive water treatment procedure suitable for application in developing countries. Microbially contaminated water is filled into transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles and exposed to full sunlight for at least 6h. Solar radiation and elevated temperature destroy pathogenic germs efficiently. Recently, concerns have been raised insinuating a health risk by chemicals released from the bottle material polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Whereas the safety of PET for food packaging has been assessed in detail, sim

Senseless Violence Against Central American Unaccompanied Minors: Historical Background and Call for Help.

The southwestern U.S. border has recently seen a significant increase in the number of unaccompanied children from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador illegally crossing the Mexican border into the United States. Many of these children leave home to flee violence, starvation, impoverished living conditions, or other life-threatening situations. The treatment of acute stress, anxiety, and depression associated with traumatic events is crucial in helping these children address these negative psychological events they have experienced so that they can move forward with their lives. Untreated, tr

[Histoplasmosis among travellers to Central America].

BACKGROUND: In April 2004, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health was notified about an outbreak of a respiratory illness among participants on a cultural-historical theme tour to Central America. One patient was examined in a Swedish hospital where the clinician suspected histoplasmosis, which later was verified by serology and by culture of Histoplasma capsulatum. In order to describe the outbreak and identify the possible source of infection, a clinical and epidemiological study was conducted. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire on symptoms, treatment and participation in various activ

Topical lidocaine spray for reducing pain during paracervical block administration in postmenopausal women undergoing manual vacuum aspiration: A randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of topical lidocaine versus placebo in reducing pain during manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) for endometrial sampling in patients with endometrial thickening, as measured by the visual analog scale (VAS). METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled superiority trial conducted at Hospital Escuela, Tegucigalpa, Honduras. A total of 129 patients with endometrial thickening were randomized to receive either 10 % topical lidocaine spray or 0.9 % normal saline spray applied to the cervix prior to standard paracervical block. Pain was assessed using a 100-

A comprehensive review of Onchocercidae nematodes (Nematoda; Filarioidea) infecting wild ruminant ungulates of North and Central America.

The family Onchocercidae, or filarioid nematodes, comprises common vector-borne parasitic worms that can infect, among other vertebrates, wild North American ruminant ungulates. Infection is a product of the available hosts and vectors distributed in viable ecosystems that permeate throughout the North America (i.e., Canada, United States, and Mexico) and Central America (i.e., Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama). The formation of these host-parasite assemblages can produce serious to no apparent clinical signs for the infected host animal depending on

Diagnostic Challenges in a Case of Immune-Mediated Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura With Severe ADAMTS13 Deficiency.

Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is rare and potentially life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) caused by acquired immune-mediated or congenital deficiency of the von Willebrand factor regulatory enzyme, a Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase with a Thrombospondin Type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13) which cause microthrombi to form and occlude the microvasculature. The occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in TTP is rare and often underestimated due to confusion with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). A 23-year-old Mestizo male patient presented with altered mental status, hemo

[Pulmonary histoplasmosis exhibiting solitary pulmonary nodule resected by thoracoscopic surgery: a case report and review of the Japanese literature].

We reported a case of pulmonary histoplasmosis showing solitary nodular shadow. A 43-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray films during a routine checkup. He had traveled to Honduras for 7 days. Chest computed tomographic (CT) scans showed a 13 x 12 mm nodular shadow with unclear margin in the left upper lobe (S3). Both transbronchial lung biopsy and CT guided transcutaneous needle biopsy failed to yield a definitive diagnosis. Thoracoscopic resection of the nodule was performed due to suspicion of lung cancer. Pathologically, the nodule display

Prevalence of leptospirosis among soldiers: A systematic review.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that spreads through water and soil contaminated with infected animal urine. Soldiers have a higher risk of infection because they often work in wet and muddy conditions. This systematic review examines how common leptospirosis is among military personnel. Studies published between January 2000 and November 2024 were collected from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, following PRISMA guidelines. The review included studies that used laboratory tests to confirm leptospirosis cases in soldiers. Out of 67 studies, three met the inclusion criteria. These studie

Coccidioidomycosis in Latin America.

Coccidioidomycosis is a highly prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America and has been reported (human and zoonotic cases) in México, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. The incidence of coccidioidomycosis in Latin America is unknown due to lack of clinical awareness and limited access to laboratory diagnosis. Coccidioidomycosis is as prevalent in Mexico as in the endemic regions of the United States. The number of cases reported in Brazil and Argentina has progressively increased during the last decade, including areas that were not considered

Performance of passive case detection for malaria surveillance: results from nine countries in Mesoamerica and the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: In malaria elimination settings, available metrics for malaria surveillance have been insufficient to measure the performance of passive case detection adequately. An indicator for malaria suspected cases with malaria test (MSCT) is proposed to measure the rate of testing on persons presenting to health facilities who satisfy the definition of a suspected malaria case. This metric does not rely on prior knowledge of fever prevalence, seasonality, or external denominators, and can be used to compare detection rates in suspected cases within and between countries, including across se

A multinational study to compare prevalence of atopic dermatitis in the first year of life.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is common in childhood, with peak prevalence in early childhood. However, international comparisons of prevalence have focused on older children. We analysed differences in prevalence rates of AD and the associations with putative risk and protective factors, among infants in two European and two Central American countries. METHODS: In 1-yr old infants participating in the International Study of Wheezing in Infants (EISL), prevalence of AD and putative risk and protective factors were assessed by a questionnaire applied to parents. For each risk/protective f

What differentiates method stoppers from switchers? Contraceptive discontinuation and switching among Honduran women.

CONTEXT: Contraceptive discontinuation contributes to unplanned pregnancy and unwanted births, as well as increased maternal, neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Information on differences between women who stop using contraceptives and those who switch to another method would be useful for programs aimed at preventing unplanned pregnancies and their consequences. METHODS: Data come from two rounds of interviews with women aged 15-44 (800 interviewed at baseline and 671 reinterviewed one year later) who were new or continuing users of injectable or oral contraceptives or an IUD. The reintroduction of DENV-2 in 2011 in Panama and subsequent outbreak characteristic.

The circulation of the South-east Asian/American (AS/AM) dengue 2 virus (DENV-2) genotype in the Americas has been associated with a high rate of severe disease. From 1993, the year DENV was reintroduced in Panama, until 2011 there were 29 dengue-associated deaths, 17 of which occurred in 2011, the most severe outbreak with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 44% (17 deaths out of 38 severe dengue cases). During this outbreak DENV-2 was reintroduced into the country, whereas over the prior five years DENV-1 and -3 were predominant. Herein, we describe the 2011 Panama outbreak and genetically charact
