Factors Influencing the Implementation of a Multispecialty Virtual Ward Program in the United Kingdom: Qualitative Exploration of Staff Experiences and Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The National Health Service (NHS) in England is facing unprecedented demand for hospital services, with virtual wards (VW) being a central tenet of the strategy to manage these ongoing pressures on capacity. VWs combine digital and analog tools, monitoring systems, and teams of multidisciplinary care providers to support patients in their place of residence who might otherwise be cared for in a hospital. Despite virtual ward programs continuing to proliferate in the United Kingdom and across the globe, the models of care that support them are still evolving, and best practices in t

The Painful Sacrifice: The Epidemiology of Hand Injuries During the Holy Festivals in the Sultanate of Oman-A 10-Year Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The human hand is an important functional and sensory organ. Its complex anatomy reflects its important functional capabilities. Many Muslim countries observe the holy festivals with a traditional sacrifice of an animal in order to share the meat (basic commodity) with beloved ones. During such festivals hand injuries have been reported to increase. This study aimed to compare cases and controls of hand injuries treated at the national trauma center in the Sultanate of Oman during a 10-year time period. METHODS: This is a case-control retrospective review for 10 years in the Sulta

Global nurse navigation models in chronic disease care: A scoping review and conceptual framework development.

BACKGROUND: Nurse Navigator (NN) models have expanded globally to address rising chronic disease burdens and patients' unmet psychosocial and sociocultural needs. Variations in health system structures have produced diverse NN models across countries. PURPOSE: This scoping review examined how NN models are implemented in chronic disease care and identified shared and divergent features. METHODS: Using JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR reporting, a systematic search of five databases was conducted in March 2025. Guided by Vanasse's multidimensional care-trajectory model (Vanasse et al., 2018), 3

Development of a structured shared decision-making model for implementation in hospital care.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a core component of patient-centred care, with proven benefits for decision quality and satisfaction. However, its implementation in hospital settings remains limited. This study aimed to describe the development of a SDM model and to evaluate its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects through two pilot implementation studies. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods design including the co-creation of an SDM implementation model and two comparative pilot evaluations. Development involved a multidisciplinary team. Pilot impleme

Outcomes and perspectives of woman-newborn dyads following discharge from a quaternary maternity service in Australia: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The average postnatal stay for most Australian mothers is two days. Postnatal length of stay is dependent on various factors, such as maternal preferences, mode of birth or complications following birth. However, little is known about the relationship between these elements. AIM: To prospectively explore maternal and neonatal postnatal outcomes within the context of length of stay, model of care and personal expectations and experiences within the first 3-5 weeks following birth. METHODS: A cross-sectional study within an urban quaternary Australian hospital was conducted between

Shared decision making for children with chronic respiratory failure-It takes a village and a process.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Shared decision making (SDM) before nonurgent tracheostomy in a child with chronic respiratory failure (CRF) is often recommended, but has proven challenging to implement in practice. We hypothesize that utilization of the microsystem model for analysis of the complex ecosystem in which SDM occurs will yield insights that enable formation of a reproducible, measurable SDM process. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of a case series of children with CRF in whom a SDM process was pursued. The process included a palliative care consult, a validated decision aid and 12

Assessment of the prevalence of stress, anxiety and depression in healthcare workers providing services related to communicable diseases in primary-level health units in Maputo city, Mozambique: an observational cross-sectional study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health is essential for well-being and critical to the quality of care delivered by healthcare professionals. Health workers face increased risks of mental health disorders due to long hours, high emotional and physical demands, and exposure to communicable diseases, which exacerbate stress and anxiety levels. Evidence from low-income countries, including Mozambique, is scarce, yet health professionals in these regions frequently deal with the dual burden of communicable diseases and resource constraints. This study addresses a critical evidence gap by focusing on the ment

Storms of ventricular fibrillation responsive to isoproterenol in an idiopathic ventricular fibrillation patient demonstrating complete right bundle branch block.

A 45-year-old male was admitted to our hospital after successful resuscitation of cardiac arrest. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) had occurred during breakfast and was defibrillated by an automated external defibrillator operated by emergency medical service staff. On admission, his ECG demonstrated complete right bundle branch block as the sole abnormality. Intensive examination could not detect any structural disease leading to a diagnosis of idiopathic VF and implantation of an ICD. VF storm occurred one month after hospital discharge and beta-blocker, amiodarone, and sedative administration

Risks of treating leprosy in a general hospital.

The Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, with 1208 beds, is situated in an endemic area in which the prevalence of leprosy among adults is 3.4%. Two percent of the beds are occupied by leprosy patients, and about 4000 are seen as outpatients per year. They share with other patients all medical, nursing, laboratory, and other services. The impact of these attitudes and practices on the incidence of leprosy among staff and students was studied. This hospital has 2665 staff, including housekeeping personnel, technicians, nurses, and doctors. There are 777 medical, nursing, and paramed

Perspective of midwives working at hospitals affiliated to the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences regarding medical errors.

BACKGROUND: Committing an error is part of the human nature. No health care provider, despite the mastery of their skills, is immune from committing it. Medical error in the labor and obstetrics wards as well as other health units is inevitable and reduces the quality of health care, leading to accident. Sometimes these events, like the death of mother, fetus, and newborn, would be beyond repair. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perspective of gynecological ward providers about medical errors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive-analytical study. Sample size was 94 p

Enhancing Learning Health Systems in Primary and Community Care: Contributions of NHS Library and Knowledge Specialists.

CONTEXT: Learning communities driving the data-knowledge-practice learning cycle are at the core of learning health systems (LHS). With the right team in place, including knowledge management expertise, LHS accelerates improvements, delivering on the healthcare quadruple aim and health equity. Within the National Health Service (NHS) in England, knowledge management and librarian expertise exist mainly within acute hospital settings. This makes it harder for those developing LHS in community health settings to benefit from this expertise. EXPERIENCE REPORT METHODS AND RESULTS: Three proof-of-

Strengthening Postabortion Family Planning Services in Ethiopia: Expanding Contraceptive Choice and Improving Access to Long-Acting Reversible Contraception.

Where unmet need for the safest, most effective, and long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) is very high, the health system and partners need to implement problem-solving, locally feasible, and comprehensive family planning delivery strategies. Because young and unmarried women are most at risk for unintended pregnancy and repeat abortion due to poor access to contraceptive services, postabortion family planning (PAFP) is a key component in such strategies. In Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, Ethiopia, Ipas implemented health system strengthening efforts from fiscal

Transitional care programs to improve the post-discharge experience of patients with multiple chronic conditions and co-occurring serious mental illness: A scoping review.

The transition from hospital to home can be especially challenging for those with multiple chronic conditions and co-occurring serious mental illness (SMI). This population tends to be Medicaid-insured and disproportionately experiences health-related social needs. The aim of this scoping review was to identify the elements and outcomes of hospital-to-home transitional care programs for people diagnosed with SMI. A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's methodology. Three databases were searched; ten articles describing eight transitional care programs published from 2013 to

Parents' experiences of the time preceding infant admission to hospital within 4 weeks of birth: a qualitative interview study.

PROBLEM: Infant readmissions within the first 28 days of life have risen significantly over the past decade. BACKGROUND: Postnatal care is often described as under-resourced, with many women reporting a lack of sufficient support after birth. OBJECTIVE: To explore parents' experiences in the lead-up to infant readmission within the first four weeks of life. METHODS: Twenty-eight parents of 18 infants unexpectedly admitted to a large urban paediatric referral hospital in England within four weeks of birth were interviewed face to face. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. FINDINGS: P

The manifestation of participation within a co-design process involving patients, significant others and health-care professionals.

BACKGROUND: Despite intentions to increase user participation in the development of health services, the concept of participation and how it unfolds within studies with a participatory design has rarely been addressed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe how user participation manifests itself within a co-design process involving patients, significant others and health-care professionals, including potential enablers or barriers. METHODS: This study was conducted in the context of a co-design process of a new person-centred transition from a hospital to continued rehabilitation

Pearls of experience for safe and efficient hospital practices in otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery in Hong Kong during the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic originated in Wuhan, China and spread rapidly worldwide, leading the World Health Organization to declare an official global COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. In Hong Kong, clinicians and other healthcare personnel collaborated closely to combat the outbreak of COVID-19 and minimize the cross-transmission of disease among hospital staff members. In the field of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) and its various subspecialties, contingency plans were required for patient bookings in outpatient clinics, surgeries in operating ro

'Why are we stuck in hospital?' Barriers to people with learning disabilities/autistic people leaving 'long-stay' hospital: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Transforming care so that people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people can receive support at home rather than in hospital settings is a key priority, but progress has been slow. Despite significant national debate, little previous research has engaged directly with people in hospital, their families or front-line staff to understand the issues from their perspectives. OBJECTIVES: This research seeks to better understand the experiences of people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people in long-stay hospital settings, their families and front-line staff - usin

Pilot of a person-centred, interdisciplinary approach to goal setting in Ireland's National Rehabilitation Hospital: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Research has emphasised the value of a person-centred, interdisciplinary team (IDT) approach to structured goal setting in rehabilitation; yet these approaches are not consistently implemented in clinical practice, limiting the effect that goal setting can have on rehabilitation. The introduction of a new IDT, person-centred goal-setting process to Ireland's National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) offers an opportunity to gain insight into barriers to implementing and normalising IDT goal setting in complex, specialist rehabilitation services. This process was developed prior to, an
