The intestinal microbiota, a barrier to the establishment of pathogenic bacteria, is also an important reservoir of opportunistic pathogens. It plays a key role in the process of resistance-genes dissemination, commonly carried by specialized genetic elements, like plasmids, phages, and conjugative transposons. We obtained from strains of enterobacteria, isolated from faeces of newborns in a university hospital nursery, indication of phenotypical gentamicin resistance amplification (frequencies of 10(-3) to 10(-5), compatible with transposition frequencies). Southern blotting assays showed str

Salmonella strains isolated in a teaching-cum-general hospital in Kuwait during 1990-1993 and 1996 were analysed to determine the trend in the prevalence of the serogroups and their changing pattern of susceptibility. The records were reviewed for all the 661 isolates encountered during these periods. The most prevalent serogroup in both children and adults was serogroup B, followed by serogroup C and D. A sizeable proportion of the strains were resistant to first-line drugs. About 39% of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin, 17% to co-trimoxazole, 13% to chloramphenicol, and 15% to cepha

In 1994, Microbiology Laboratories of ten Portuguese hospitals analysed isolated microorganisms found in blood and urine samples and studied antimicrobial susceptibilities of the most frequent bacterial pathogens. From 63780 blood samples, the most frequent were Staphylococcus spp. and from 69189 urine samples significant numbers of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida spp. were isolated. Escherichia coli strains (c.7000) revealed a low percentage of resistance to antibiotics with the exceptions of ampicillin (48%) and co-trimoxazol (25%). Klebsiella pneumoni

A nationwide epidemiologic study of clinical Staphylococcus isolates was performed in Italy by 24 operative units distributed throughout the country. A total of 7,017 Staphylococcus strains were examined according to a standard protocol. Three species of acknowledged importance in human infections (namely S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and S. saprophyticus) were identified singly, whereas the other staphylococci were considered as a whole and designated Staphylococcus spp. S. aureus totalled 55% of total isolates and was reported by most operative units as the predominant species among isolates bo

The data on blood culture isolates for 1983 and January - July 1984 reported by the Antibiotic Study Group of South Africa have been analysed to determine national and regional prevalences of different micro-organisms and resistance to certain antibiotics. Although there are significant differences in isolation frequencies between the various centres, overall the five most frequent isolates are Staphylococcus aureus (1983 - 15%; 1984 - 14%), Escherichia coli (13%), Klebsiella spp. (11%; 10%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (9%), and Salmonella typhi (7%; 13%). Staph. aureus ranks first in most centr

The experience with neonatal sepsis at The Johns Hopkins Hospital during 1969-1975 was reviewed. Major pathogens included Escherichia coli, group B streptococcus, other streptococci, and Klebsiella. Nineteen percent of coliform isolates were kanamycin-resistant. The frequency of recovery of E. coli was increased in early-onset sepsis, and the frequency of recovery of Klebsiella was increased in late-onset sepsis. The mortality rate was 23%. The frequency of recovery of E. coli was increased in fatal cases, and mortality was highly correlated with the presence of gastrointestinal catastrophe. A

OBJECTIVE: Information on diseases of public health importance is scanty or unavailable in South Africa as a result of a weak health surveillance system. Large institutional databases of common diseases can, therefore, provide useful ancillary information for planning and policy, despite unavoidable selection bias. We conducted a 12-year retrospective review (1985-1996) of all children admitted to the only isolation facility for the Durban metropolitan region. Our aim was to document changes in admissions and mortality for common childhood infectious diseases and to detect any impact of the HI

16S rRNA methylase-mediated high-level resistance to aminoglycosides has been reported recently in clinical isolates of Gram-negative bacilli from several countries. Twenty-one (6.2%, 21/337) of 337 isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae from a teaching hospital in Wenzhou, China, were positive for 16S rRNA methylase genes (3 for armA, 13 for rmtB, 5 for both armA and rmtB) and highly resistant to gentamicin, amikacin, and tobramycin (MICs, > or =256 microg/mL). Nineteen of 21 isolates harboring 16S rRNA methyalse genes were extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producers. The plasmids harboring

Citrobacter freundii has acquired resistance to several antimicrobial drugs, including last-resort antibiotics affecting, therefore, clinical efficacy and causing high rates of mortality. In this study, we investigate the whole genome sequence of a carbapenem-resistant C. freundii strain isolated from the hospital environment in Tunisia. A total of 210 samples were taken using sterile swabs, from inanimate surfaces, medical devices, and care staff, during the period extended between March and April 2019. After the microbiological analysis of samples and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, on

To address the public health problem of antibiotic resistance, the European Union (EU) founded the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System. A network of 40 hospitals that serve approximately 30% of the Spanish population (about 12 million) participated. Each laboratory reported data on antimicrobial susceptibility testing using standard laboratory procedures that were evaluated by an external quality control program. The antibiotic consumption data were obtained from the National Health System. We compared the antibiotic susceptibility of Spanish isolates of invasive Streptococcu

OBJECTIVES: The absence of clinical studies in Slovakia on carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae, A. baumannii, and P. aeruginosa, makes planning and treatment strategies challenging and less effective. Our aim is to provide new clinical data on the percentage of healthcare-associated infection, antibiotic resistance profile, and mortality risk associated with these carbapenem-resistant bacteria in our department.
METHODS: An observational, prospective, cross-sectional study was performed for a period of 15 months. Strain identification was performed after classical isolation and bio-chemical an

Background Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP), defined as pneumonia developing ≥48 hours after admission in non-intubated patients, is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to hospital morbidity and mortality but remains under-studied compared with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), particularly in the Gulf region. In Bahrain, published NV-HAP data are absent, limiting locally informed empiric therapy and antimicrobial stewardship. This study aimed to characterize bacterial pathogens causing culture-confirmed NV-HAP in adults at a tertiary center in Bahrain and to

Treatment of infections in the intensive care unit (ICU) represents a great challenge, especially those caused by Gram-negative organisms. Rapid introduction of appropriate antimicrobial therapy is crucial to reduce mortality; resistance rates in the ICU can be elevated due to antimicrobial selection pressure. We evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from patients hospitalized in ICUs (ICU patients). The isolates were consecutively collected as part of the SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program from January 2009 to December 2011 and tested fo

The multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli, particularly β-lactamase producing strains, has become a global health challenge, where wastewater systems, specially from hospitals, serve as critical reservoirs for the dissemination of resistance genes. The objectives of the study were to investigate the whole genome sequence diversity and genetic variations focusing on their evolutionary relationships, genetic similarity, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of pathogenic β-lactamase producing E. coli strains. A total of four β-lactamase producing E. coli strains, from differently locat
