Usability of a cross-system housing stability program for juvenile courts: A multimethod study of probation counselor perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Youth in contact with the juvenile legal system experience disproportionate rates of homelessness. While system contact is a critical intervening point, juvenile courts do not typically offer housing services. One solution is to refer youth to evidence-based, community-based services to meet housing-related needs, but a myriad of individual and organizational factors often impede court staff from making such referrals. Housing Stability for Youth in Courts (HSYNC) is a novel, cross-system service linkage model for court-involved youth facing housing instability. HSYNC was developed…

Measuring the Value of a Practical Text Mining Approach to Identify Patients With Housing Issues in the Free-Text Notes in Electronic Health Record: Findings of a Retrospective Cohort Study.

Introduction: Despite the growing efforts to standardize coding for social determinants of health (SDOH), they are infrequently captured in … ng issues [i.e., homelessness current (HC), homelessness history (HH), homelessness addressed (HA), housing instability (HI), and building quality (BQ)] and developed several phrases addressing each one through collaboration with SDOH experts, consulting the literature, and reviewing existing coding standards. Universal screening for homelessness and risk for homelessness in the Veterans Health Administration.

We examined data for all veterans who completed the Veterans Health Administration's national homelessness screening instrument between October 1, 2012, and January 10, 2013. Among veterans who were not engaged with the US Department of Veterans Affairs homeless system and presented for primary care services, the prevalence of recent housing instability or homelessness was 0.9% and homelessness risk was 1.2%. Future research will refine outreach strategies, targeting of prevention resources, and development of novel interventions.

HIV Testing and ART Adherence Among Unstably Housed Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States.

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) have the highest HIV incidence rate among all MSM in the United States (US), and are also disproportionately affected by homelessness and housing instability. However, little is known about the effects of homelessness on the HIV testing and care continuum for BMSM. Between 2014 and 2017, the Promoting Our Worth, Equality, and Resilience (POWER) study collected data and offered HIV testing to 4184 BMSM at Black Pride events in six US cities. Bivariate analyses were used to assess differences in sociodemographics and healthcare access between BMSM who self-…

Intersections of disability and housing insecurity: A snapshot and call to action.

Few studies have explored the co-occurrence of housing insecurity and educational disability among preK-12 students. Yet, both are the basis for legal entitlements to educational supports and protections and are often associated with unmet educational needs with far-ranging detriments to students' experiences; functioning; and academic, social, emotional, and health outcomes. This exploratory descriptive study used a state's education and homeless management information systems' data to examine the co-occurrence of disability and housing insecurity among 989,572 preK-12 students enrolled in Mi

Temporary Financial Assistance for Housing Expenditures and Mortality and Suicide Outcomes Among US Veterans.

CONCLUSION: We find that providing housing-related financial assistance to individuals facing housing instability is associated with improvements in important health outcomes such as all-cause mortality and suicidal ideation. If causal, these results suggest that programs to provide housing assistance have positive spillover effects into other important aspects …

Aboriginal children and family connections to primary health care whilst homeless and in high housing mobility: observations from a Nurse Practitioner-led service.

AIM: This article documents the impact of a Nurse Practitioner-led primary health service for disadvantaged children living in housing instability or homelessness. It identifies that First Nations children miss out on essential primary care, particularly immunisation, but have less severe health conditions than non-First Nations children living in housing insecurity. BACKGROUND: Health services for homeless populations focus on the 11% of rough sleepers, little is done for the 22% of children in Australia living in housing instability; many of whom are from First Nations families. Little is k…

Shallow Subsidies for Veterans Facing Housing Barriers in the VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program.

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides a shallow subsidy (i.e., subsidizing 50% of an individual's rent for two years) to Veterans experiencing housing instability. We sought to describe the characteristics of Veterans who received these subsidies. Methods. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of Veterans between 10/2019-9/2021. We identified Veteran-level characteristics associated with receiving a shallow subsidy using a multivariable two-part regression model. We also conducted qualitative interviews to identify how shallow subsidies are allocated. Results Black race, higher incom…

Homeless Shelter Entry in the Year After an Emergency Department Visit: Results From a Linked Data Analysis.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Housing instability is prevalent among emergency department (ED) patients and is known to adversely affect health. We aim to determine the incidence and timing of homeless shelter entry after an ED visit among patients who are not currently homeless. METHODS: We conducted a random-sample survey of ED patients at an urban public hospital from November 2016 to September 2017. Patients provided identifying information and gave informed consent for us to link their survey data with the New York City Department of Homeless Services shelter database. Shelter use was followed prospe…

Presence of Any Medical Debt Associated With Two Additional Years of Homelessness in a Seattle Sample.

Although medical debt has been associated with housing instability, almost no research has connected homelessness to medical debt. We interviewed 60 individuals experiencing homelessness in Seattle, selected from those participating in self-governed encampments organized by a homeless advocacy organization. Most respondents reported having at least one kind of debt, with two-thirds reporting current medical debt. Almost half reported trouble paying medical bills for themselves or family members. Almost one-third believed medical debt was in part responsible for their current housing situation.…

Expedited referrals from community health center to opioid treatment program: innovative approaches to improving access to methadone treatment for patients who use opioids and experience homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Methadone treatment (MT) is the “gold standard” treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, patients face significant barriers to enrollment at opioid treatment programs (OTPs), e.g. need for proof of identity, lack of transportation, and limited intake hours. For patients experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, those barriers are magnified. OBJECTIVE: We created a multifactorial intervention to address the above-described barriers to facilitate prompt OTP admission for patients with OUD and housing instability. METHODS: Our target population was patients with OUD and …
