Isomerization of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen isocyanide in a cluster environment: quantum chemical study.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and its isomer hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) are omnipresent in the interstellar medium (ISM). The ratio between the two isomers serves as an indicator of the physical conditions in different areas of the ISM. As such, the isomerization process between the two isomers has been extensively studied on the neutral potential energy surface. Moreover, HCN and HNC are thought to be precursors of important organic molecules, such as adenine. Here, we use quantum chemistry calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to focus on the chemistry that occurs upon ionization

In situ hydrogen nanogenerator for bimodal imaging guided synergistic photothermal/hydrogen therapies.

Multifunctional nanoagents integrating multiple therapeutic and imaging functions hold promise in the field of non-invasive and precise tumor therapies. However, the complex preparation process and uncertain drug metabolism of nanoagents loaded with various therapeutic agents or imaging agents greatly hinder its clinical applications. Developing simple and effective nanoagents that integrate multiple therapeutic and imaging functions remain a huge challenge. Therefore, a novel strategy based on in situ hydrogen release is proposed in this work: aminoborane (AB) was loaded onto mesoporous polyd

Is exogenous hydrogen sulfide a relevant tool to address physiological questions on hydrogen sulfide?

This review challenges the use of solutions of dissolved exogenous H2S in the literature as a tool to determine the potential physiological functions of endogenous H2S as well as its putative therapeutic applications. Our major point of contention is that solutions of dissolved H2S are used in vitro at concentrations, within the high microM range, which are above the concentrations of dissolved H2S found in blood and tissues during lethal H2S exposure in vivo. In addition, since the levels of toxicity are extremely variable among cell types, a property that is seldom acknowledged, the physiolo

Nickel-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of ketones using ethanol as a solvent and a hydrogen donor.

We report a nickel(0)-catalyzed direct transfer hydrogenation (TH) of a variety of alkyl-aryl, diaryl, and aliphatic ketones with ethanol. This protocol implies a reaction in which a primary alcohol serves as a hydrogen atom source and solvent in a one-pot reaction without any added base. The catalytic activity of the nickel complex [(dcype)Ni(COD)] (e) (dcype: 1,2-bis(dicyclohexyl-phosphine)ethane, COD: 1,5-cyclooctadiene), towards transfer hydrogenation (TH) of carbonyl compounds using ethanol as the hydrogen donor was assessed using a broad scope of ketones, giving excellent results (up to …

Stimulating the anaerobic biodegradation of explosives by the addition of hydrogen or electron donors that produce hydrogen.

The anaerobic biodegradation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) by a methanogenic mixed culture was investigated. Microcosms containing a basal medium and the mixed culture were amended with ethanol, propylene glycol (PG), butyrate or hydrogen gas as the electron donor and a mixture of TNT (50 microM), RDX (25 microM), and HMX (8 microM). After 29 days TNT and RDX were completely transformed to unidentified endproducts in the bottles amended with ethanol, hydrogen, or PG, while 53%, 40%, and

Evaluation of the hydrogen breath test in man: definition and elimination of the early hydrogen peak.

After ingestion of a non-absorbable carbohydrate breath hydrogen excretion increases early at about 10 minutes, and again later when the ingested carbohydrate enters the caecum. The late rise has been used as a marker of mouth to caecum transit time, but the source of the early rise has not been satisfactorily explained. We studied in 60 healthy volunteers the source and frequency of the early rise in breath hydrogen after ingestion of a non-absorbable carbohydrate. After ingestion of either lactulose solution (10 g in 150 ml water), lentil soup (46 g carbohydrate) or solid meal containing bak

Recent Progress in Alloy-Based Catalysts for the Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Molecules.

Biomass is an abundant renewable carbon resource for the sustainable production of fuels and value-added chemicals. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) provides a mild and attractive route for upgrading biomass-derived molecules without the need for externally supplied high-pressure H2. However, the structural complexity and multifunctionality of biomass substrates give rise to intricate reaction networks, while the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) often limits Faradaic efficiency and product selectivity. In recent years, alloy-based catalysts have attracted increasing attention be…

Hydrophobic carbon dots as spatial confiners for isolating Pd nanoparticles for efficient nitrobenzene hydrogenation.

In this study, hydrophobic carbon dots (hy-CDs) are introduced as a spatial barrier to induce the uniform dispersion of Pd nanoparticles on two-dimensional N-doped carbon nanosheets (Pd/hy-CDs@NCNS). Owing to the surface modification and confinement effect of the hy-CDs, the as-prepared Pd/hy-CDs@NCNS catalyst exhibits a 13-fold enhancement in activity compared to the counterpart prepared without hy-CDs under mild conditions (40 °C, 0.1 MPa H2).

ZrO2 supported Fe-based catalysts for direct synthesis of light olefins via CO2 hydrogenation.

The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to light olefins provides a sustainable route for producing key chemical intermediates and reducing dependence on fossil-based feedstocks. In this study, FeK, FeCoK, and FeCuK catalysts supported on ZrO₂ were synthesized by a simple wet impregnation method and evaluated for CO₂ hydrogenation. The goal of the study was to understand how secondary metal promoters (Co or Cu) influence the structural and electronic properties of K-promoted Fe/ZrO₂ catalysts and how these modifications affect CO₂ conversion and product selectivity. Among the catal…

Mainstream modification strategies for improving Au-based catalysts towards photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to methanol (CHM) can directly convert solar energy into the high-value-added product methanol (CH3OH) through a green chemistry method, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly route to solve the energy crisis and thus contributing to carbon neutrality. Among the various photocatalytic platforms, Au-based catalysts have shown great potential in photocatalytic CHM due to their unique electronic, optical, and catalytic properties. However, Au nanoparticles (NPs) often suffer from various drawbacks in Au-based CHM systems. Some dominant strategies incl…

Reversing the Hydrogenation Pathways of Nitrogen-Containing Intermediates for the Kinetics-Matched Urea Electrosynthesis.

Urea electrosynthesis from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrate (NO3 -) is a promising sustainable route. However, the kinetic mismatch between key intermediates remains the major challenge for achieving selective C‒N coupling. Herein, indium-doped titanium dioxide (In-TiO2) nanofibers were developed to regulate the hydrogenation pathway for realizing kinetics-matched urea electrosynthesis. In situ spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that In doping reverses the hydrogenation pathway of nitrogen-containing intermediates from the Eley-Rideal (E-R) to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (…

Isolated and H2-reduced Anderson clusters catalyse low-temperature hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol.

CO2 hydrogenation, especially to methanol, is crucial to establishing sustainable closed-loop systems for carbon utilization. However, the difficulties of CO2 activation at low temperatures and the ambiguity of structure-activity correlations are obstacles to reducing the energy consumption of the hydrogenation process. Here we report that molecularly defined Anderson PtMo6O24 clusters, sited within a robust metal-organic framework, are catalytic for low-temperature CO2 hydrogenation. The performance of the cluster showed no signs of decay in either its activity or methanol selectivity over 3,…

CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol on Core-Shell-Structured SiO2-Encapsulated Cu-ZnO-In2O3 Nanoparticles.

Since Cu-ZnO-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol are generally suffered from thermal aggregations of Cu nanoparticles under an excess water environment, SiO2-encapsulated Cu-ZnO-based nanoparticles with multicore-shell structures were applied in this study. The synergistic effects of In2O3 on the Cu-ZnO surfaces and protective SiO2 overlayers were verified to explain the positive contributions of In2O3 with decreased CO selectivity and an increased methanol selectivity above 80%, which were attributed to the prohibited competitive reverse water-gas shift reaction activity and les…

Single-atom Cu1/ZrO2 coupled with SAPO-34 enhances CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins.

CO2 reduction to light olefins is an important pathway toward carbon neutrality, but it is hindered by low thermodynamic conversion and the … culations demonstrate that the interaction between Cu single atoms and ZrO2 facilitates the further hydrogenation of formate intermediates to methoxy species, while reducing the energy barrier for methoxy hydrogenation to methanol, thus ensuring high light olefin selectivity in subsequent conversion over SAPO-34. This work provides new insights for CO2 conversi …

Chiral Benzimidazole Manganese Catalysts for Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of 3-Substituted 2H-1,4-Benzoxazines.

The efficient synthesis of chiral 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzoxazines is of considerable interest to both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Current catalytic methods predominantly rely on precious metals and air-sensitive chiral phosphine ligands. As a cost-effective alternative, the asymmetric reduction of benzoxazine frameworks using earth-abundant metals remains underexplored. Herein, we report manganese catalysts bearing chiral benzimidazole ligands derived from (1S,2S)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of 2H-1,4-benzoxazines. This protocol aff…

Cooperative Dinuclear Activation of a Formate Intermediate in the Hydrogenation of CO2 to Methanol.

CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is achieved by homogeneous catalysts through a formic acid derivative. Previous studies have focused on using large amounts of additives to activate this intermediate, such as strong acids, amines and alcohols. Hydrogenation of CO2 under basic conditions has been reported to only produce highly stable formate salts. We present in this contribution a novel method for formate activation that allows for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol under basic conditions, by bimetallic activation of the formate salt by a cobalt and a nickel complex. From various catalytic and stoich…

Rational Design and Modulation of In2O3-Based Catalysts for Efficient CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

To achieve the global carbon neutrality target by approximately 2050, the development and deployment of carbon-negative technologies based on green chemical principles have become an urgent strategic priority. Among various CO2 valorization routes, catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to methanol (CH3OH, CHM) has attracted intensive interest, in which indium oxide (In2O3) stands out as a highly promising candidate due to its unique properties in stabilizing key reaction intermediates for CH3OH synthesis. However, the practical implementation of pristine In2O3 is severely hindered by insufficient cataly…

Aligning H2 Activation with Functional-Group Polarity: K+-Promoted Switchable Hydrogenation on Pd/TiO2.

Rationally aligning H2 activation modes with the polarity of substrate functional groups is central to chemoselective heterogeneous hydrogenation but remains poorly understood. Here we show that K+ doping of Pd/TiO2 (Pd/KTiOx) enables concerted control of H2 dissociation and C═O activation, resulting in a switchable hydrogenation chemoselectivity. Pristine Pd/TiO2 selectively hydrogenates the C═C bond of maleic anhydride to succinic anhydride with 99% selectivity, whereas Pd/KTiOx hydrogenates both C═C and C═O bonds to γ-butyrolactone with 99% selectivity. On both catalysts, H2 undergoes homol…

Efficient Electrolysis of Biomass-Derived Carbonyl Compounds to Alcohols via Lanthanide-Modulated Hydrogenation Pathways.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds offers a sustainable alternative to thermochemical routes, yet its selectivity is often constrained by unavoidable competition with hydrogen evolution through surface-bound H* intermediates. Here we demonstrate that electrocatalytic hydrogenation pathways can be reprogrammed via lanthanide assisted adsorption configuration engineering strategy, enabling direct control over reaction mechanisms at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Using levulinic acid (LA) as a representative biomass-derived carbonyl compound, cobalt nanopar…
