In many arid and semi-arid systems, biological communities in river ecosystems are submitted to flow interruption and desiccation, as well as to the impact of urban wastewaters. In this work, we studied (using a LC-LTQ-Orbitrap) the metabolomic response of biofilm communities exposed to both hydrological and chemical stressors. Fluvial biofilms were exposed to a mixture of 9 pharmaceuticals at a total concentration of 5000ng/L (mimicking concentrations and compounds found in polluted aquatic environments) and/or to seven days of desiccation, under laboratory conditions. The biosynthesis of fat

Ecosystem diversity and human activity in dry climates depend not just on the magnitude of rainfall, but also on the landscape's ability to … retain ephemeral water for wetlands and groundwater recharge. Our findings suggest that the surface hydrology and associated ecosystems are transient features on million-year timescales, and reflect the mode of landscape evolution.

Contaminated drainage from metal mines is a serious water-quality problem facing nations that exploit metal mineral resources. Measurements of river hydrochemistry during baseflow are common at mine sites, whilst detailed hydrochemical information regarding stormflow is limited and often confined to a single event. This study investigates the seasonal evolution of stormflow hydrochemistry at an abandoned metal mine in central Wales, UK, and the possible sources and mechanisms of metal release. Significant flushing of metals was observed during stormflow events, resulting in concentrations that

Iron- and methane-cycling are important processes in wetlands with one connected to plant growth and the other to greenhouse gas emission, respectively. In contrast to acidic habitats, there is scarce information on the ecology of microbes oxidizing ferrous iron at circumneutral pH. The latter is mainly due to the lack of isolated representatives and molecular detection techniques. Recently, we developed PCR-DGGE and qPCR assays to detect and enumerate Gallionella-related neutrophilic iron-oxidizers (Ga-FeOB) enabling the assessment of controlling physical as well as biological factors in vari

This review summarizes some of the principal results of systematic measurements of trace metal concentrations throughout San Francisco Bay that began in 1989, and that have yielded insights on the factors controlling temporal and spatial variations of those concentrations on seasonal to decadal time scales. Pronounced seasonal variation in some metal concentrations is associated with gradients in the system's hydrology and the diagenetic remobilization of metals from benthic sediments. Additional temporal variation is associated with interannual differences in hydrologic flushing (e.g., ENSO c…

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) travel from cities into rivers and coastal waters through wastewater treatment plants. Monitoring them normally requires metagenomic sequencing, which is sufficiently costly that most utilities can sample only occasionally. Weather and location data are freely available on a daily basis for virtually any location worldwide, making them attractive predictors for identifying where limited sequencing resources should be prioritized. However, whether such models generalize to previously unseen cities remains largely untested, as most published studies train and e

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in coastal urban waters pose increasing environmental and public health risks due to their persistence and their role in accelerating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), yet their dynamics remain difficult to predict under data-scarce conditions. This study developed an integrated multi-model framework that combines a process-based hydrological model, a modified LOADEST model, multiple machine learning approaches, and Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) for interpretability to predict antibiotics and AMR indicators (mainly ARGs) in three coastal

Drained peatlands are major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing these is essential for achieving climate mitigation targets and agricultural net-zero goals. Water table depth (WTD) strongly influences emissions, yet national assessments often overlook the role of drain water levels within complex lowland drainage networks in controlling WTD. The objective of this study was to test a drainage-constrained field-scale modelling framework for estimating how raised ditch-water levels alter water-table dynamics and modelled CO₂-CH₄ emissions across managed lowland peat fields. LiDAR-

Climate change is intensifying floods, droughts, and nutrient export from agricultural landscapes, threatening water security under increasingly non-stationary hydroclimatic conditions. Although landscape-scale water-retention measures are widely promoted as nature-based solutions, their combined effectiveness under future climates remains poorly constrained, particularly across contrasting hydroclimatic settings. Here, we evaluate the capacity of distributed retention portfolios to buffer climate-driven hydrologic and water-quality change using a harmonized, field-explicit Soil and Water Asse

Tele-epidemiology consists in studying human and animal epidemic, the spread of which is closely tied to environmental factors, using data from earth-orbiting satellites. By combining various data originated from satellites such as SPOT (vegetation indexes), Meteosat (winds and cloud masses) and other Earth observation data from Topex/Poseidon and Envisat (wave height, ocean temperature and colour) with hydrology data (number and distribution of lakes, water levels in rivers and reservoirs) and clinical data from humans and animals (clinical cases and serum use), predictive mathematical models…

Rainfall runoff is one of the key drivers of microplastic transport from sources to sinks, but the dynamic changes of microplastics remain insufficiently quantified. This study systematically investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of microplastics in a typical agricultural watershed from April to December 2025 through soil sampling and monthly water monitoring, combined with high-frequency monitoring of 13 rainfall events to quantify the impact of rainfall on microplastic transport. Results showed that soil microplastic abundance was higher near residential areas. The water microplastic

Benthic biofilm microbial communities play a critical role in riverine primary production, nutrient cycling, and organic matter decomposition, yet their responses to hydrological alterations due to small hydropower plants (SHPs) remain poorly understood, particularly with respect to seasonal dynamics. This study conducted a one-year monitoring survey across four river sections (upstream, reservoir, dewatered reach, and downstream) in the Oujiang River Basin, Zhejiang Province, China, covering all four seasons. The results showed that the reservoir section exhibited distinct bacterial compositi

Wetlands are vital carbon sinks and play a key role in climate regulation. However, climate change and human disturbances are altering wetland hydrology with water level fluctuations profoundly influencing carbon sequestration. While previous syntheses and modeling studies have suggested the existence of water level thresholds in wetland carbon dynamics, the mechanisms underlying these thresholds remain poorly understood, and field-based evidence is lacking. Here, we present results from a long-term field experiment across six water level treatments, ranging from 100 to 40 cm above the soil su…

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is an emerging carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy that can support net-zero emission targets. However, current ERW modelling efforts rely on assumptions that introduce substantial variation in CDR estimates across varying ecosystems and hydroclimatic conditions. They typically ignore or oversimplify plant-soil interactions and high-frequency hydrological dynamics, obscuring short-term weathering responses and biotic feedbacks to soil moisture dynamics. Here, we introduce an integrated, process-based modelling framework, T&C-SMEW, which represents ecohydrologic

Sustainable and water-wise cities maintain an eco-friendly urban hydrological cycle (UHC). Regrettably, the UHC of Pakistani cities is not consistently eco-friendly. Pakistan is situated within the influential area of the world's largest monsoon weather system. Cities like Lahore face simultaneous vulnerabilities to urban flooding and water scarcity due to extreme climate change events. Therefore, Pakistan's urban areas necessitate Urban Water Infrastructural Transformation (UWIT), achievable only after identifying suitable Rainwater and Stormwater Harvesting Potential Sites (RSWHPS) in Lahore

Extreme disasters, defined as low-probability-high-consequences events, are often due to cascading effects combined to amplifying environmental factors. While such a risk complexity is commonly addressed by the modeling of site-specific multi-risk scenarios, there exists no harmonized approach that considers the full space of possibilities, based on the general relationships between the environment and the perils that populate it. In this article, I define the concept of a digital template for multi-risk R&D and prototyping in the Generic Multi-Risk (GenMR) framework. This digital template con

We propose and analyze an important extension of standard cholera epidemiological models, explicitly accounting for fluctuations of water availability to the human community under study. The seasonality of water input in the reservoir drives the variation of concentration of Vibrio cholerae. Two compartments are added to the Susceptible-Infected-Bacteria model. First, the recovered individuals, which, over many seasons, lose their immunity to the disease and replenish the Susceptible group. Second, the water volume of the reservoir, which determines bacterial dilution and, consequently, the pr
