BACKGROUND: Parathyroid neoplasms form a small percentage of head and neck neoplasms. Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by parathyroid adenomas, hyperplasia or, rarely, a carcinoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 48 parathyroidectomies received in the Department of Pathology of a major teaching hospital over a period of 10 years. Clinical, biochemical and radiological details were retrieved from medical records. Information regarding routine gross and microscopic examination findings (including frozen section and paraffin sections) was retrieved from departmental

BACKGROUND: A recent study found considerable regional differences in treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism in Norway. There is no consensus on specific indications for operation in these patients. We surveyed opinions among Norwegian endocrine surgeons and endocrinologists on the indications for surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire on preoperative evaluation, indications for surgery and treatment of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism was sent to the chief consultants of surgical departments that operated on parathyroid glands in 2

OBJECTIVE: To determine the most effective preoperative localization techniques for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism to facilitate the surgical procedure, decrease patient morbidity, and decrease the number of repeat surgeries owing to inability to locate the abnormal parathyroid gland.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study in which 53 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent preoperative sestamibi scanning and ultrasonography. If the two tests failed to agree on the precise location of the abnormal gland, a third imaging technique, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), was

This study reports the development of a recombinant Bacillus ligniniphilus L1 laccase-rice straw biochar composite and its application in deltamethrin bioremediation. The L1-laccase was heterologously expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3), purified to a specific activity of 186 U/mg, and covalently immobilized on NaOH- and glutaraldehyde-modified rice straw biochar. Molecular docking against the AlphaFold2-predicted structure (UniProt E9PZ36) yielded a binding affinity of - 6.9 kcal/mol, with one hydrogen bond to MET216 (2.77 Å) and hydrophobic contacts with MET197, MET202, and MET210. However, 100

Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia in the outpatient setting and is typically caused by a single benign parathyroid adenoma. Most patients with hyperparathyroidism are postmenopausal women. Patients can be asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. Parathyroidectomy is the definitive cure for primary hyperparathyroidism, and no medical therapies have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for this disorder. Guidelines for surgery have been established by a National Institutes of Health consensus panel, but many patients do not meet these guidelines or

The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is characterized by the constellation of elevated plasma serum calcium levels and low serum anorganic phosphate associated with inadequately high blood concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Parathyroid adenomas are the main reason for this disorder and can frequently be detected by ultrasound examination. Surgical removal of the parathyroid adenoma is recommended in the case of primary hyperparathyroidism complicated by osteoporosis, hyper-calciuria, nephrolithiasis, or impaired renal function. Here we present the case of a 68-year-old

BACKGROUND: With the use of routine calcium evaluation, the incidence of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) has considerably increased. The aim of our study was the assessment of the morbidity and the outcome of surgically treated patients with pHPT.
METHODS: The charts of 279 patients (204 female, 75 male, median age: 58 years) who underwent surgery for pHPT between 1989 and 1999 were retrospectively reviewed. A follow-up was carried out on 235 patients after a mean period of 3.6 years (0.2-10 years).
RESULTS: In 148 patients a unilateral, and in 130 patients a bilateral approach was taken.

Primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism have evolved since their original description. What was once a debilitating disease has now become one with few symptoms on initial presentation. Complications from these disorders have decreased significantly because of earlier detection. Improved management of patients with chronic renal disease has also limited complications among those with secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism. Appropriate management is essential even in the early phase of the disorder to minimize the morbidities that may result if left untreated.

As molecular biology and genetic mapping receive wider application to human disease, genetic alterations have been identified with increased frequency in some patients with primary hyperparathyroidism(HPT). These alterations have been found in molecules related to cellular signaling and growth (RET proto-oncogene)and in tumor suppressors that control cell cycle progression and gene transcription (cyclin D1 and the MEN1 gene product. Although primary HPT can usually be treated surgically without knowledge of which specific genetic alteration has occurred, this information may assist clinicians

Surgery was performed in 161 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Eight of 161 patients underwent repeated surgeries. In 6 patients persistent PHPT was associated with hyperplasia of parathyroid glands (PTG), in 1 -- with adenoma of PTG missed during the first surgery. In 4 of them hyperplastic PTG are located in anterior mediastinum, in 1 -- in posterior. In 2 patients with verified hyperplasia of PTG repeated surgeries were limited in the region of the neck. During repeated surgery in one patient recurrence of PTG cancer was diagnosed. Specific group consisted of 8 patients with

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is cited as one of diseases which cause secondary osteoporosis and predominantly affects cortical bone. This disease occurs frequently during the postmenopausal period. Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is the only option available for the radical cure of pHPT and brings about marked increase in bone mass even in postmenopausal women. On the other hand, this disease is now recognized as a disorder with few overt manifestations, presenting as asymptomatic hypercalcemia. Even in these cases, a considerable increase in bone mass can be obtained by PTX. Bisphosphonate as w

OBJECTIVE: Primary hyperparathyroidism (1HPT) is now being diagnosed with increasing frequency. Simultaneously there has been an apparent change in the presentation of the disease and indications for surgery. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical presentation, indications for surgery, and outcomes of neck explorations for primary hyperparathyroidism.
METHODS: This study was carried out over a 12 year period, January 1990 to April 2002 at Jordan University Hospital, Amman, Jordan. Information on the indications, procedure performed, pathology and complications of all neck explorati

Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism is an uncommon condition usually found among patients with urinary stones. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a patient with normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism presenting with bilateral femoral neck fracture. A 45-year-old man had pain both hip joints and limping in for several months. Vertical fractures of bilateral femoral necks were found by radiographs. Laboratory findings showed a normal value of total serum calcium but elevated serum ionized calcium. Serum parathyroid hormone and alkaline phosphatase levels were elevat
