Use of hypnosis to treat chronic somniloquy (sleep talking): a Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: This case study describes a hypnotherapeutic intervention for a 46-year-old man with chronic somniloquy that had persisted for decades, worsening during periods of stress. The patient sought treatment due to spousal complaints regarding the disturbance in her sleep. METHODS: A treatment plan consisting of eight bi-weekly hypnotherapy sessions was developed and initiated. The intervention focused on clinical hypnosis as the primary therapeutic modality for addressing somniloquy. RESULTS: The intervention yielded positive results. By the sixth scheduled session, the patient's wif…

Age regression in clinical hypnosis: an integrative critical review of therapeutic mechanisms.

Age regression represents a foundational technique in clinical hypnosis, yet its therapeutic mechanisms, clinical applications, and evidence base remain incompletely understood and subject to ongoing controversy. This integrative critical review synthesizes primary research on hypnotic age regression to evaluate therapeutic mechanisms, clinical applications, methodological quality, and implications for evidence-based practice. We conducted a narrative synthesis of 241 primary research studies published between 2015-2025, focusing on randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, experimental s…

A group hypnosis intervention for caregivers confronted with dementia: Results of a pilot study.

BackgroundCaregivers of persons with dementia (PwDs) provide extensive daily support and are exposed to significant psychological distress, health deterioration, and relational strain. They often feel insufficiently prepared to manage caregiving. While hypnosis seems promising for caregivers of PwDs, evidence remains scarce, particularly in group formats.ObjectiveThis exploratory pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of a group hypnosis intervention for caregivers of PwDs, as a preliminary step toward a randomized controlled trial (RCT).MethodsA si…

Home-Based Hypnosis: A Feasibility Study for End-of-Life Patients and Their Relatives.

CONTEXT: Palliative care patients facing the end of their life often experience severe symptoms and seek complementary therapies for relief and improved well-being. Clinical hypnosis is a promising mind-body therapy in palliative settings, benefiting both patients and their relatives. Nevertheless, access at the end-of-life can be limited due to symptom severity and restricted mobility. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a home-based hypnosis intervention for end-of-life patients to alleviate symptoms and for their relatives to enhance coping resources…

Electrophysiological Characterization of Sex-Dependent Hypnosis by an Endogenous Neuroactive Steroid Epipregnanolone.

Neuroactive steroids (NAS) have long been recognized for their hypnotic and anesthetic properties in both clinical and preclinical settings. While sex differences in NAS sensitivity are acknowledged, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we examined sex-specific responses to an endogenous NAS epipregnanolone (EpiP) in wild-type mice using behavioral assessment of hypnosis (loss of righting reflex, LORR) and in vivo electrophysiological recordings. Specifically, local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from the central medial thalamus (CMT) and electroencephalogram (EEG) …

Echoes of the self: A neurophenomenological journey into the shifting realms of selfhood in neutral hypnosis.

Neutral hypnosis offers a valuable state for researchers interested in the nature of consciousness. By minimizing external influences and suggestions, it allows for the investigation of the intrinsic qualities of hypnotic consciousness and its relationship to normal waking states. Studies have shown that neutral hypnosis can result in a significant shift in self-perception. Self-consciousness in neutral hypnosis is often characterized by distortions in the sense of self, fluctuations in self-awareness, and alterations in the experience of agency and body ownership. However, despite these clear…

Hypnosis as a complementary approach in the anaesthetic management of anterior mediastinal mass biopsy.

Anterior mediastinal masses pose significant anaesthetic challenges, primarily due to the risks of airway compression and haemodynamic instability. We present the case of an adolescent with an anterior mediastinal mass causing severe tracheal and vascular compression, necessitating urgent diagnostic biopsies. Given the high risk associated with general anaesthesia, the procedure was performed under local anaesthesia in conjunction with clinical hypnosis. This approach was well tolerated, successfully avoiding deep sedation and airway manipulation. As the initial biopsies were inconclusive, an e…

Calm Contact Technique Based on the Endocrinological Mechanism of Hypnosis-A Theoretical Proposal.

This paper proposes the "calm contact" technique: an imaginative scenario where someone is in gentle contact with a loved one where the essence of the experience is to enjoy safety and calmness in peaceful social contact. The theoretical background is outlined by combining the brain mechanisms of stress reactions and hypnosis. In addition to the ancient stress responses (flight or fight or freeze), there are oxytocin-based options at the human level: tend and befriend behavior and the state of calm and connection, which is not a stress reaction but a resting reaction. These social-based reacti…

How hypnotic suggestions work - A systematic review of prominent theories of hypnosis.

In recent decades, hypnosis has increasingly moved into the mainstream of scientific inquiry. Hypnotic suggestions are frequently implemented in behavioral, neurocognitive, and clinical investigations and interventions. Despite abundant reports about the effectiveness of suggestions in altering behavior, perception, cognition, and agency, no consensus exists regarding the mechanisms driving these changes. This article reviews competing theoretical accounts that address the genesis of subjective, behavioral, and neurophysiological responses to hypnotic suggestions. We systematically analyze the…

RESULTS: There is not enough evidence to indicate that hypnosis-based interventions may reduce the severity of depression, which precludes the clinical recommendation of this intervention for patients in the real world, pending the production of better evidence of effectiveness and safety, although no evidence o …

Hypnosis facilitates psychosomatic improvement in a patient with treatment-resistant idiopathic tinnitus.

Chronic tinnitus, also known as phantom sound perception, is a pervasive and often debilitating condition, affecting 15 to 20% of the popula … ponding changes in functional neural structures. Given the results of this case study, we recommend hypnosis as an alternative or adjunct to current treatment modalities for tinnitus and further investigation in this area.

Hypnosis for Antineoplastic-Related Taste Disturbance in a Patient With Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Taste disturbances are prominent side effects of antineoplastic medications and contribute to morbidity and quality-of-life impairment. Few treatment options are available for antineoplastic-related taste disorders. Hypnosis has been found to be effective for a variety of symptoms in the cancer setting, including insomnia, pain, mood disorders and anxiety. Numerous somatosensory perceptual changes have been observed with hypnosis, including perception of tactile stimuli and color. Here, we report a case of a 74-year-old woman with recurrent metastatic breast cancer presenting with an 18-month …

Psychosocial effects of hypnosis in patients with obesity: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

The usefulness of hypnosis in patients with obesity needs to be better understood in terms of various outcomes, in addition to weight loss. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of hypnosis and self-hypnosis in combination with nutrition education for patients with obesity, as opposed to nutrition education alone, on the secondary outcomes of quality of life (QoL), coping strategies, and self-esteem within a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Eighty-two participants were included in this study (84.3% were women), with 41 in each group. Further, 70 participants had completed t…

Pilot: does clinical hypnosis training impart the confidence needed to use it?

The clinical hypnosis literature suggests that confidence in new clinical skills is an important learning outcome; however, many current training standards for clinical hypnosis do not address outcomes such as confidence. To address this deficit, this pilot study asked whether clinical hypnosis instruction offered by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) leads to learner confidence. A one-group observational A-B survey-based design examined baseline, expected, and post-training confidence in the use of skills necessary for clinical hypnosis. Twenty clinicians in attendance at an ASC…

Is Hypnotic Induction Necessary to Experience Hypnosis and Responsible for Changes in Brain Activity?

The relevance of formal hypnotic induction to the experience of trance and its neural correlates is not clear, in that hypnotizability, beliefs and expectation of hypnosis may play a major role. The aim of the study was assessing the EEG brain activity of participants with high (highs) or low hypnotizability scores (lows), aware of their hypnotizability level and informed that the session will include simple relaxation, formal hypnotic induction and neutral hypnosis. A total of 16 highs and 15 lows (according to the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, form A) were enrolled. Their EEGs were…

Using hypnosis in clinical practice for the management of chronic pain: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Interventions used in chronic pain management do not routinely use clinical hypnosis (CH), despite evidence to suggest its effectiveness in improving pain outcomes. This study aimed to explore the beliefs and attitudes of clinicians' towards the implementation of CH in chronic pain management. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative analysis following online CH training. Clinicians working in three tertiary pain clinics, were recruited to participate in the online training program and invited to focus groups following completion of the training to explore beliefs and at…

Feasibility of a Self-Administered Hypnosis Intervention for Improving Sleep in College Students.

Approximately two out of three college students report experiencing suboptimal sleep quality. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of a self-administered hypnosis intervention to improve sleep in college students. Twenty-two college students who self-reported poor sleep quality were enrolled in a 4-week study comprising 1 baseline week and a 3-week self-administered hypnosis intervention. Sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency as measured by wrist actigraphy were significantly improved. The mean average nightly sleep duration during the baseline week was 398.88 minutes (SD = …

Hypnosis on patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Acceptability and tolerance of chemotherapy on patients treated for breast cancer remain challenging. Complementary approaches such as hypnosis may have a favorable impact both at the time of announcing and during chemotherapy, due to the notorious anxiety, distress, and self-perceived dysfunction. The objective of the study was that the patients complied with at least four self-hypnosis sessions out of the six cycles of chemotherapy. METHODS: This open, prospective longitudinal study assessed feasibility of compliance to self-hypnosis during chemotherapy in an outpatients setting…

Case Study: Cognitive Restructuring Hypnosis for Chronic Pain in a Quadriplegic Patient.

This case study reports on a 28-year-old male with spinal cord injury (SCI), quadriplegia, and chronic pain with neuropathic characteristics. The treatment had to be adapted to address the patient's needs, as he was on a respirator and paralyzed from the chin down. The intervention consisted of eight 90-minute sessions. The first four sessions were based on a standardized hypnotic cognitive therapy protocol developed for a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The sessions included training in cognitive restructuring skills and a hypnosis session with suggestions that was audiorecorded. Instructi…

Integrating Hypnosis with Other Therapies for Treating Specific Phobias: A Case Series.

There is a high prevalence of anxiety disorders including specific phobias and panic disorder in the United States and Europe. A variety of therapeutic modalities including pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, systematic desensitization, hypnosis, in vivo exposure, and virtual reality exposure therapy have been applied. No one modality has been entirely successful. There has been only a limited attempt to combine psychological therapies in the treatment of specific phobias and panic disorder and what has been done has been primarily with systematic desensitization or cognitive behavi…
