Regulatory roles of the circRNA-RBP axis in exercise-induced skeletal muscle remodeling: mechanistic controversies and translational illusions.

Metabolic health and physical performance rely upon skeletal muscle adaptation that is a result of exercise. Recent advancements in high-throughput sequencing and functional genomics have successfully identified a vast landscape of exercise-responsive circRNAs, providing critical insights into the molecular complexity of muscle adaptation. While these studies have established a foundational framework for understanding the circRNA-RBP axis, there are serious issues related to current research. There are serious issues related to current research: an insufficient level of endogenous circRNA to p

Subclinical elevation of plasma C-reactive protein and illusions/hallucinations in subjects with Parkinson's disease: case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Though infections are associated with psychotic symptoms, whether or not subclinical inflammation is associated with hallucinations is not known in Parkinson's disease (PD). PURPOSE: To investigate the association of illusions/hallucinations and plasma CRP levels in PD patients without symptomatic infections. METHODS: PD patients not diagnosed as having infections were assessed for illusions and hallucinations using the Parkinson Psychosis Questionnaire (PPQ). It comprises four-domain questions: PPQ-A for sleep problems, PPQ-B for hallucinations/illusions, PPQ-C for delusions, an…

Prevalence of some symptoms in adolescence and maturity: social phobias, anxiety symptoms, episodic illusions and idea of reference.

In order to compare the prevalence of certain symptoms in adolescence with those at other ages, 6,034 apparently normal subjects aged 9-60 years were studied by questionnaire. Fear of blushing and fear of being looked at showed a maximum in the mid-teens and a subsequent gradual decrease both in males and females. They were more common in females at most ages. The anxiety symptoms also showed a peak in the mid-teens but there was a period of relative increase in the forties. Episodic illusions and the idea of being talked about started to decrease with age in adolescence.

The Missing Dimension in Cancer Education: Developmental Meaning-Making and the Expert's Illusion of Symmetry.

Health literacy interventions, message tailoring, and motivational strategies have substantially advanced cancer education over the past three decades. Yet persistent challenges across the cancer continuum-inconsistent screening uptake, probabilistic risk misinterpretation, and premature discontinuation of adjuvant endocrine therapy-suggest that an additional dimension, one largely absent from these otherwise sophisticated frameworks, is at work. Drawing upon constructivist epistemology, constructive-developmental theory, and extensive empirical evidence on lay meanings, this review examines t

When purple perceived only at fixation: A fixation- and distance-dependent color illusion.

In this paper, an optical illusion is described in which purple elements are perceived as purple at the point of fixation, while surrounding elements of the same purple color are perceived toward a blue hue. As the viewing distance increases, a greater number of purple elements revert to a purple appearance.

The Inflation Illusion: How New Zealand Households Overestimate Increases in Food Prices.

Using nationally representative survey data collected in February 2025, this article examines how New Zealand households perceive food price inflation. We find that perceived food price inflation significantly exceeds the official rate, with respondents estimating food price inflation to be over seven times higher than reported figures. Perceptions vary by age and gender: women report higher inflation estimates than men, and perceived inflation decreases with age. Quantile regressions suggest that these differences are concentrated around the median and the upper quantile of the distribution o

The benchmark illusion: on the curious underestimation of AI and the uncertainty of its creators' gold standards.

UNLABELLED: Artificial intelligence (AI) systems have quietly crossed an uncomfortable threshold: on a growing range of diagnostic tasks, they often match, and in some well-defined tasks even exceed, human performance. Evidence from large language models such as Med-PaLM and GPT-4, and deep learning systems in pathology, radiology, and hematology, shows high accuracy and reproducibility, challenging traditional human benchmarks, although still being subject to substantial heterogeneity in the studies cited. Yet most evaluation frameworks continue to treat human consensus on curated, retrospect

A Worm-Like Illusion: Fibrin Clot Mimicking Parasitic Infection in a Child With Hematuria.

Hematuria in children often presents a diagnostic puzzle, especially when cystoscopic findings are unexpected-such as the appearance of worm-like structures. We report the case of a 13-year-old male with recurrent hematuria, initially suspected of having a parasitic bladder infection based on endoscopic findings. Ultimately, histopathology identified the structure as a fibrin clot. This case emphasizes the importance of including fibrin clots in the differential diagnosis of pediatric hematuria and highlights the essential role of pathology in guiding management when visual impressions might m

Posteroseptal RVOT PVCs in a Clockwise-Rotated Congenital Heart: A Left-Sided Illusion.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiography (ECG) localization of ventricular arrhythmias assumes normal cardiac anatomy. In cases of adult congenital heart disease, surgical remodeling can confound traditional algorithms. CASE: A 26-year-old male with repaired pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect presented with a 17% premature ventricular complexes burden. The ECG showed right bundle branch block morphology, inferior axis, and positive precordial concordance, classically suggesting a left-sided origin. However, cardiac computed tomography revealed extreme clockwise rotation, displacing the ri

Individual alpha frequency tACS modifies the detection of space-time optical illusion.

Postdiction is a perceptual phenomenon where the perception of an earlier stimulus is influenced by a later one. This effect is commonly studied using the 'rabbit illusion', in which temporally regular, but spatially irregular, stimuli are perceived as equidistant. While previous research has focused on short inter-stimulus intervals (100-200 ms), the role of longer intervals, which may engage late attentional processes, remains unexplored. This study investigates whether postdiction is purely perceptual or also involves attentional mechanisms by using visual stimuli separated by extended inte

Functional brain response pattern under rubber hand illusion based on fNIRS.

The rubber hand illusion (RHI), where people experience a sense of ownership over a rubber hand, has been researched by various neuroimaging methods. Here we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to analyze the activation and functional connectivity of related brain regions under RHI. Meanwhile, three brain functional network parameters were calculated and analyzed: degree, clustering coefficient, and characteristic path length. fNIRS results showed that under RHI, the oxyhemoglobin (HbO) concentration increased in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), motor cortex (MC) and occipital lobe

Galvanic vestibular stimulation to counteract leans illusion: comparing step and ramped waveforms.

Leans is a common type of Spatial Disorientation (SD) illusion that causes pilots to be confused about the position of the aircraft during a flight. This illusion could lead to serious adverse effects and even flight mishaps. Therefore, an effective means to deal with leans is crucial for flight safety. This study aims to investigate the effects of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) technology with different waveforms as a tool to mitigate the negative effects of leans. 20 Air Force pilots participated in leans-induced flight simulation experiment with three GVS conditions (without-GVS, ste

Attenuation of sensory processing in the primary somatosensory cortex during rubber hand illusion.

The neural representation of the body is easily altered by the integration of multiple sensory signals in the brain. The "rubber hand illusion" (RHI) is one of the most popular experimental paradigms to investigate this phenomenon. During this illusion, a feeling of ownership of the rubber hand is created. Some studies have shown that somatosensory processing in the brain is attenuated when RHI occurs. However, it is unknown where attenuation of somatosensory processing occurs. Here, we show that somatosensory processing is attenuated in the primary somatosensory cortex. We found that the earl

Beware of Optical Illusion of the Alar Base in Unilateral Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity.

BACKGROUND: It is generally accepted that the alar base on the cleft side in the cleft lip nose is displaced outward and downward; therefore, it is rotated inward and upward in almost all procedures for cleft lip closure. However, nostril narrowing and collapse of the lower lateral cartilage on the cleft side are sometimes experienced. In this retrospective study, we investigated whether the preoperative alar base on the cleft side is displaced outward and downward. METHODS: This was a retrospective evaluation using preoperative frontal images obtained from patients with unilateral cleft lip

Cathodal Occipital tDCS Is Unable to Modulate the Sound Induced Flash Illusion in Migraine.

Migraine is a highly disabling disease characterized by recurrent pain. Despite an intensive effort, mechanisms of migraine pathophysiology still represent an unsolved issue. Evidence from both animal and human studies suggests that migraine is characterized by hyperresponsivity or hyperexcitability of sensory cortices, especially the visual cortex. This phenomenon, in turn, may affect multisensory processing. Indeed, migraineurs present with an abnormal, reduced, perception of the Sound-induced Flash Illusion (SiFI), a crossmodal illusion that relies on optimal integration of visual and audit

Illusion of arm movement evoked by tendon vibration in patients with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Studies in healthy people show that stimulation of muscle spindles through frequency-specific tendon vibration (TV) induces the illusory perception of movement. Following spinal cord injury (SCI), motor and sensory connections between the brain and parts of the body below-the-lesion level are partially or totally impaired. OBJECTIVE: The present investigation is a descriptive study aimed to investigate whether people living with SCI may experience movement illusions comparable to a control group. METHODS: Healthy and people with SCI were asked to report on three illusion-related …

Brain process for perception of the "out of the body" tactile illusion for virtual object interaction.

"Out of the body" tactile illusion refers to the phenomenon in which one can perceive tactility as if emanating from a location external to the body without any stimulator present there. Taking advantage of such a tactile illusion is one way to provide and realize richer interaction feedback without employing and placing actuators directly at all stimulation target points. However, to further explore its potential, it is important to better understand the underlying physiological and neural mechanism. As such, we measured the brain wave patterns during such tactile illusion and mapped out the

The Dynamic Ebbinghaus: motion dynamics greatly enhance the classic contextual size illusion.

The Ebbinghaus illusion is a classic example of the influence of a contextual surround on the perceived size of an object. Here, we introduce a novel variant of this illusion called the Dynamic Ebbinghaus illusion in which the size and eccentricity of the surrounding inducers modulates dynamically over time. Under these conditions, the size of the central circle is perceived to change in opposition with the size of the inducers. Interestingly, this illusory effect is relatively weak when participants are fixating a stationary central target, less than half the magnitude of the classic static i

Incidental parathyroidectomy as a cause of postoperative hypocalcemia after thyroid surgery: reality or illusion?

AIM: We aimed to investigate the incidence and clinical relevance of incidental parathyroidectomy (IPT) following thyroid surgery. METHODS: A retrospective review of thyroid operations was performed between January 2013 and January 2014. Pathology and operative reports were analyzed to identify the specimens which included parathyroid tissue. Information related to diagnosis, operative details and postoperative complications were collected. Calcium levels of ≤8 mg/dL was defined as biochemical hypocalcemia and those presenting with classic findings of acute hypocalcemia, were classified as cl

Pathological gamblers are more vulnerable to the illusion of control in a standard associative learning task.

An illusion of control is said to occur when a person believes that he or she controls an outcome that is uncontrollable. Pathological gambling has often been related to an illusion of control, but the assessment of the illusion has generally used introspective methods in domain-specific (i.e., gambling) situations. The illusion of control of pathological gamblers, however, could be a more general problem, affecting other aspects of their daily life. Thus, we tested them using a standard associative learning task which is known to produce illusions of control in most people under certain condi…
