DTCo: An Ensemble SSL Algorithm for X-ray Classification.

In the last decades, the classification of images was established as a typical method for diagnosing many abnormalities and diseases. The purpose of an efficient classification method is considered essential in modern diagnostic medicine in order to increase the number of diagnosed patients and decrease the analysis time. The significant storage capabilities of electronic media have enabled research centers to accumulate repositories of classified (labeled) images and mostly of a large number of unclassified (unlabeled) images. Semi-supervised learning algorithms have become a hot topic of res

An Adversarial Learning Approach to Medical Image Synthesis for Lesion Detection.

The identification of lesion within medical image data is necessary for diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Segmentation and classification approaches are mainly based on supervised learning with well-paired image-level or voxel-level labels. However, labeling the lesion in medical images is laborious requiring highly specialized knowledge. We propose a medical image synthesis model named abnormal-to-normal translation generative adversarial network (ANT-GAN) to generate a normal-looking medical image based on its abnormal-looking counterpart without the need for paired training data. Unlike t

Temporal registration for low-quality retinal images of the murine eye.

This paper presents an investigation into different approaches for segmentation-driven retinal image registration. This constitutes an intermediate step towards detecting changes occurring in the topography of blood vessels, which are caused by disease progression. A temporal dataset of retinal images was collected from small animals (i.e. mice). The perceived low quality of the dataset employed favoured the implementation of a simple registration approach that can cope with rotation, translation and scaling, in the presence of major vascular dissimilarities, distortions, noise, and blurring e

Task-based evaluation of axial and multiplanar reconstructions in computed tomography: A volumetric analysis of spatial resolution, noise, and detectability.

BACKGROUND: Multiplanar reconstructions (MPRs) are an essential clinical tool for interpreting complex 3D anatomy, offering improved diagnostic accuracy in computed tomography (CT). However, image quality can be impaired by the inappropriate use of reconstruction parameters for primary axial slices. PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize the fundamental aspects of image quality of axial CT slices and MPRs associated with different reconstruction parameters for three recent CT systems and to propose optimal reconstruction parameters for MPRs. METHODS: A dedicated cubic test-object was desi

RCLM-net: A rich-club properties based lightweight deep neural network for multimodal sequence spine MR images segmentation.

The diagnosis of spinal diseases relies on the comprehensive assessment of multimodal sequence MR images. As a prior foundation for intelligent aid diagnosis, it is important to design an efficient MR image segmentation model. However, previous models for multimodal images tend to have a large number of parameters, which is not suitable for low-computing-power application scenarios, especially for primary medical sites. To address the above problem, this study constructs a lightweight neural network model for multimodal sequence spine MR images segmentation, named RCLW-Net (Rich-Club Lightweig

Background phase induced steady-state effects in velocity quantification using phase-contrast MRI.

PURPOSE: Flow quantification using phase-contrast (PC) MRI is based on steady-state gradient echo (GRE) sequences and is hampered by spatially varying background phase offsets. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of steady-state disruptions during PC-MRI GRE sequences on these background phases. Based on these findings, a specific sequence and timing is suggested, and caution is expressed when using typical correction algorithms. METHODS: Steady-state responses in stationary tissue were investigated in different prospectively triggered through-plane phase-contrast MRI seque

SynMSE: A multimodal similarity evaluator for complex distribution discrepancy in unsupervised deformable multimodal medical image registration.

Unsupervised deformable multimodal medical image registration often confronts complex scenarios, which include intermodality domain gaps, multi-organ anatomical heterogeneity, and physiological motion variability. These factors introduce substantial grayscale distribution discrepancies, hindering precise alignment between different imaging modalities. However, existing methods have not been sufficiently adapted to meet the specific demands of registration in such complex scenarios. To overcome the above challenges, we propose SynMSE, a novel multimodal similarity evaluator that can be seamless

Multimodality Imaging, including Dual-Energy CT, in the Evaluation of Gallbladder Disease.

Imaging of the gallbladder has a key role in the examination of patients with abdominal pain-especially pain localized to the right upper quadrant. Pathologic conditions that affect the gallbladder include cholelithiasis and associated complications such as acute and chronic cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, gallstone pancreatitis, and cancer. Modalities used to image the gallbladder include ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and nuclear scintigraphy. US is the primary imaging modality used to evaluate entities suspected of being gallbladder dise

OTMorph: Unsupervised Multi-Domain Abdominal Medical Image Registration Using Neural Optimal Transport.

Deformable image registration is one of the essential processes in analyzing medical images. In particular, when diagnosing abdominal diseases such as hepatic cancer and lymphoma, multi-domain images scanned from different modalities or different imaging protocols are often used. However, they are not aligned due to scanning times, patient breathing, movement, etc. Although recent learning-based approaches can provide deformations in real-time with high performance, multi-domain abdominal image registration using deep learning is still challenging since the images in different domains have dif

Recurrent Saliency Transformation Network for Tiny Target Segmentation in Abdominal CT Scans.

We aim at segmenting a wide variety of organs, including tiny targets (e.g., adrenal gland), and neoplasms (e.g., pancreatic cyst), from abdominal CT scans. This is a challenging task in two aspects. First, some organs (e.g., the pancreas), are highly variable in both anatomy and geometry, and thus very difficult to depict. Second, the neoplasms often vary a lot in its size, shape, as well as its location within the organ. Third, the targets (organs and neoplasms) can be considerably small compared to the human body, and so standard deep networks for segmentation are often less sensitive to th

Uncertainty-suppressed long-tailed learning with lightweight feature adaptation for multi-label chest X-ray classification.

BACKGROUND: Report-mined chest radiograph datasets commonly contain both long-tailed label distributions and uncertain annotations. Conventional frequency-based re-weighting can strengthen rare-label learning, but it may also amplify unreliable supervision when uncertain labels occur in minority classes. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate an uncertainty-suppressed long-tailed learning method with lightweight feature adaptation for multi-label chest X-ray (CXR) classification under imbalanced and uncertain report-derived supervision. METHODS: The proposed uncertainty-suppressed long-tailed feat

Revisiting Reconstruction-Based Anomaly Detection for Whole-Slide Image.

Whole Slide Images (WSIs) have been widely used in computational pathology (CPath) for various tasks. However, obtaining high-quality annotations remains a major bottleneck. Task-aware unsupervised anomaly detection models offer a promising alternative, as they are trained solely on task-specific normal data and can be adapted to clinically defined objectives, such as cancer detection, depending on the problem formulation. Despite this potential, anomaly detection models have not been thoroughly explored in the context of WSIs. Existing approaches often directly adopt techniques from other dom

Dual branch fundus deep learning network as an enhanced multi classification system for ocular disease detection via hybrid feature fusion.

Ophthalmic diagnosis relies heavily on the interpretation of fundus images to identify a range of debilitating diseases. However, the presence of multiple, co-existing pathologies and the subtle visual cues associated with early-stage disease pose a significant challenge, necessitating the development of advanced diagnostic tools. We present DFD-Net (Dual-Branch Fundus Deep Learning Network), a deep learning solution that performs multi-label classification of various ocular diseases. The system achieves this by integrating the attribute maps from bilateral retinal photographs, like those from

Photorealistic synthesis of oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions enhances deep-learning segmentation in intra-oral photographs.

Medical image analysis often struggles with limited data and scarce expert annotations, particularly for oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). We address this problem with a hybrid augmentation strategy that pairs CycleGAN image-to-image translation with a lightweight multi-scale blending refinement, termed the Realistic Enhancement Algorithm (REA). REA fuses CycleGAN-generated textures of oral lichen planus and oral lichenoid lesions (OLP/OLL) with authentic buccal-mucosa photographs, preserving anatomical detail while reducing common synthesis artifacts such as color drift, seams, an

TRAM-UNet: Transformer and Region Attention Module based U-Net for Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation.

Segmentation of breast ultrasound images is crucial for the early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer. In this study, we propose TRAM-UNet (Transformer and Region Attention Module-Based U-Net), a novel deep learning model that integrates Transformer blocks and a Region Attention Module (RAM) to improve segmentation performance. TRAM-UNet achieves average Dice scores of 88.56 ±0.91%, 84.68 ±1.20%, and 83.96 ±1.34% on the BUS-BRA, BUSI, and BLUI datasets, respectively, significantly outperforming both U-Net and U-Net + Transformer across all datasets. These results demonstrate TRAM-UNet's ab

SSL-CL-RUS - A Semi-Supervised Framework for Renal Ultrasound Segmentation in CKD: Combining Pseudo-Label Guided Contrastive Learning with ST+.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a pervasive global health challenge that necessitates early and accurate diagnosis for effective management. Renal ultrasound imaging is integral to CKD evaluation; however, precise segmentation of kidney structures is often compromised in advanced stages due to degraded image quality. In this work, we propose a novel semi-supervised segmentation framework that synergistically integrates Pseudo-Label Guided Contrastive Loss (PLGCL) with the ST++ learning strategy. By leveraging both labeled and unlabeled data, our method enhances segmentation accuracy. Extensive

Systematic application of saliency maps to explain the decisions of convolutional neural networks for glaucoma diagnosis based on disc and cup geometry.

This paper systematically evaluates saliency methods as explainability tools for convolutional neural networks trained to diagnose glaucoma using simplified eye fundus images that contain only disc and cup outlines. These simplified images, a methodological novelty, were used to relate features highlighted in the saliency maps to the geometrical clues that experts consider in glaucoma diagnosis. Despite their simplicity, these images retained sufficient information for accurate classification, with balanced accuracies ranging from 0.8331 to 0.8890, compared to 0.8090 to 0.9203 for networks tra

Deep learning for anatomical interpretation of video bronchoscopy images.

Anesthesiologists commonly use video bronchoscopy to facilitate intubation or confirm the location of the endotracheal tube; however, depth and orientation in the bronchial tree can often be confused because anesthesiologists cannot trace the airway from the oropharynx when it is performed using an endotracheal tube. Moreover, the decubitus position is often used in certain surgeries. Although it occurs rarely, the misinterpretation of tube location can cause accidental extubation or endobronchial intubation, which can lead to hyperinflation. Thus, video bronchoscopy with a decision supporting

Adrenal tumor segmentation method for MR images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Adrenal tumors, which occur on adrenal glands, are incidentally determined. The liver, spleen, spinal cord, and kidney surround the adrenal glands. Therefore, tumors on the adrenal glands can be adherent to other organs. This is a problem in adrenal tumor segmentation. In addition, low contrast, non-standardized shape and size, homogeneity, and heterogeneity of the tumors are considered as problems in segmentation. METHODS: This study proposes a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system to segment adrenal tumors by eliminating the above problems. The proposed hybrid meth

Assessment of chronic wounds by three-dimensional optical imaging based on integrating geometrical, chromatic, and thermal data.

Chronic wounds represent a particular debilitating health care problem, mainly affecting elderly people. A full and correct diagnosis of tissue damage should be carried out considering both dimensional, chromatic, and thermal parameters. A great variety of methods have been proposed with the aim of producing objective assessment of skin lesions, but none of the existing technologies seem to be robust enough to work for all ulcer typologies. This paper describes an innovative and non-invasive system that allows the automatic measurement of non-healing chronic wounds. The methodology involves th
