We report a case of nocardiosis in an immunocompetent patient who presented with pain and multiple swellings in the face. Nocardia asteroides was isolated from the parotid and submandibular salivary glands. The patient was successfully treated by surgical drainage and oral administration of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case from India on N. asteroides affecting the salivary gland.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive bacillus that causes infections primarily in animals. In humans, this bacterium usually causes localized cutaneous infections called erysipeloid. Here we report a case of pneumonia with isolation of E. rhusiopathiae from bronchoalveolar lavage and sputum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a pneumonia case caused by E. rhusiopathiae confirmed by culture.

African histoplasmosis is a rare but not an exceptional condition and recently discovered in Madagascar. We report the fifth Malagasy case involving skin and nodes in an immunocompetent patient. Management of African histoplasmosis encountered many problems because of the availability of amphotericin B and cost of the biochemical tests in order to prevent major side effects in case of failure of oral antimycotic drug.

Pulmonary cryptococcosis is rare in immunocompetent subjects. Here, we present the case of a 16-year-old boy who was referred to our pediatric department for the management of multiple consolidations detected on chest radiography, which was routinely performed when the patient was being evaluated for an ankle fracture. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed, and the definitive diagnosis was established as cryptococcal pneumonia. After 8 weeks of antifungal treatment, the pulmonary nodules on the chest radiographs disappeared.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of granulomatous amoebic encephalitis caused by Balamuthia mandrillaris.
DESIGN: Case report.
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS: An adult female patient without any apparent suppressor immune system factor had central nervous system infection caused by B mandrillaris.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical, neuroimaging, and pathology findings.
RESULTS: This study shows the diagnosis of B mandrillaris encephalitis suspected from a cerebral biopsy specimen and confirmed by immunohistochemical and polymerase chain reaction studies.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstr

Pulmonary cryptococcosis tends to occur commonly in immunocompromized patients. However, as more individuals are undergoing regular medical examinations, the number of cases of pulmonary cryptococcosis detected incidentally in immunocompetent individuals is increasing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the radiologic manifestations of pulmonary cryptococcosis in immunocompetent patients with no significant symptoms. The clinical records and radiographic findings of 7 immunocompetent subjects with isolated pulmonary cryptococcosis who were diagnosed by pathological examinations, were

Cryptococcal infections occur frequently in immunocompromised patients particularly in the context of AIDS, lymphomas and following immunosuppression for organ transplant recipients. In these contexts the infection is readily considered and diagnosis straightforward. The diagnosis is rarer and thus less likely to be considered in immunocompetent patients which can lead to late diagnosis and delay in initiation of therapy. We report the case of disseminated cryptococcosis with endobronchial, cutaneous, bone and meningeal involvement in an apparently immunocompetent patient. Before antifungal tr

We report a case of primary cutaneous cryptococcosis in an immunocompetent host. Several nodules, isolated or sometimes joint to form plaques, affected the right arm. The arm was paralytic and hypoplastic, and a history of numerous abrasions picking firewood up preceded the onset of the eruption. Histology on skin biopsy documented a dermal infiltrate constituted of histiocytes, lymphocytes, fibroblasts and rare giant cells. Numerous rounded periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) bodies were also present. Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans grew upon culture. Complete blood, biochemical and instrument

In inmunocompetent hosts, cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is generally asymptomatic. It may however present as infectious mononucleosis. Serious complications have rarely been reported. We report three cases of acute CMV hepatitis in immunocompetent men for the first time from Bangladesh. All three presented to us with features of acute hepatitis of variable duration preceded by prodrome. Other probable causes of acute hepatitis were ruled out and none had any clinical stigmata of cirrhosis. All the three patients underwent uneventful recovery. Although more common in the immunocompromised, CM

More than 20 viruses have been reported to cause myopericarditis, a rare but potentially dangerous complication. To our best knowledge only a few dozen cases of myopericarditis caused by varicella zoster virus have been reported, most frequently in children, seldom in immunocompetent adults. We report on a case of a myopericarditis caused by varicella zoster virus in a previously healthy young man, with a typical development and a fast and complete recovery. A 27-years-old male was admitted to our hospital with chest pain and signs of acute cardiac injury. He had no medical history of serious

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia, but this organism can also affect almost every organ system besides the lung. Neurological manifestations (meningitis, encephalitis, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barrè syndrome) are the most frequent extrapulmonary complications of Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We report a case of a immunocompetent child affected by encephalitis caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Acute and invasive fungal infections are usually seen in immunocompromised and debilitated patients. We report a young immunocompetent 28-year-old Indian male who presented with unilateral endogenous endophthalmitis in the left eye and was managed with pars plana vitreous surgery. The polymerase chain reaction from the vitrectomy specimen tested positive for the fungal genome while the cytology examination identified aseptate hyphae with wide-angle branching, most likely suggesting Zygomycosis. A detailed systemic evaluation failed to reveal any systemic focus or predisposing factor for fungal

In the past decade, mucormycosis has emerged as an important lethal infection in diabetics and other immunocompromised hosts. Rhinosinusitis, pansinusitis, rhino-orbital and rhinocerebral are the common classical manifestations of mucormycosis. However, primary gastrointestinal (GI) mucormycosis is an uncommon disease associated with a high mortality rate. Stomach is the most common site involved in GI mucormycosis. Reported cases of GI mucormycosis in an immunocompetent host are very few in the literature. Here we present a case of a young male with fungal sepsis secondary to GI mucormycosis

The fungi in the order Mucorales commonly target immunocompromised hosts, especially diabetics and produce fulminating respiratory and/or central nervous system infections, which are often fatal. We report primary zygomycotic pericarditis accompanied by osteomyelitis of the sternum in an immunocompetent female: a rare site and a rare setting. The disease was clinically thought to be of tuberculous aetiology and had evaded diagnosis for a year.

We report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a healthy, immunocompetent young girl (age 14 years). The patient had a 5-year history of a slowly enlarging, erythematous plaque with slight elevated, scaling, circinate borders on the right thigh. Histopathology showed a granulomatous infiltrate with broad, pale, non-septate hyphae. Mycological study identified Mucor hiemalis (Wehmer).
