The oxidation of benzylic alcohol to corresponding aldehyde and ketone using N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)-N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) has been described. This method gives easy access to the corresponding carbonyl compounds under metal-free conditions, without the use of corrosive reagent at ambient temperature in good yield.

Bulky arylstannanes and bulky aroyl chlorides are good reaction partners for the synthesis of two-, three-, and even four-ortho-substituted benzophenones, in good to excellent isolated yields (47-91%). Three simple and direct routes, with differential advantages, are proposed: (i) a catalyst-free protocol, in o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) at 180 °C; (ii) a room temperature protocol, using AlCl(3) (0.5 equiv), in dichloromethane (DCM); and (iii) a solvent-free, indium-promoted procedure. A radical mechanism is proposed for the indium-mediated reactions.

This review deals with the preparation of chiral, nonracemic α-aminoorganostannanes and their applications in asymmetric synthesis. The pioneering works in this field date back almost 20 years ago and since then extensive research has been carried out to develop efficient and selective routes to highly enantioenriched α-aminoorganostannanes. The facile Sn/Li transmetalation of these compounds by n-BuLi has led to various applications in stereoselective synthesis. Selected examples using chiral α-aminoorganostannanes as starting materials will be reported.

Essentially quantitative isolated yield and enantioselectivity of up to 95% ee was obtained. Furthermore, some of the Strecker adducts could be recrystallized in high recovery, yielding optically pure materials. Conversion of the alpha-aminonitrile adducts to the corresponding alpha-quaternary alpha-amino acids was effected in high yield by a formylation/hydrolysis sequence.

Traditionally radioactively labeled iodine has been used as a reporter group for the detection of antibodies in immunoassay. We have recently developed a microassay system for the detection of very low concentrations of iodide which eliminates the need for the use of radiolabeled iodine (O'Kennedy, R. et al. 1989, Anal. Biochem. 179, 138-144). The successful application of this assay for the detection of mouse IgG is described. The performance of this system compared with enzyme immunoassay was evaluated.

An analytical review of studies on human oxyhemoglobin coagulation has been performed by the author jointly with V. S. Koniaeva and L. D. Bogdanova within a period from 1985 to 1990. It was shown that the oxyhemoglobin coagulation modified by mercurials proceeded without any essential alteration of native protein conformation. A hypothesis is discussed that the oxyhemoglobin coagulation results from the primary polyaggregation of dimer fragments and that hydrophobic sites which provide for dimer-to-dimer contacts in native tetrameric oxyhemoglobin, participate in this process.

An analytical method has been developed for the determination of N-acetylcysteine in human serum following acetaminophen overdosage in humans.
