We present a case of a 44 year old man with flushing, diarrhea and markedly elevated 24 hour urinary 5-HIAA level, who was referred for an indium-111 pentetreotide study, after the excision of a carcinoid tumor in the terminal ileum. The paper describes the authors experience relating to the use of indium-111-oxine scintigraphy as an aid to transrectal echography in the diagnosis of difficult anal fistulas. This method has proved useful in locating otherwise undetected accumulations and in controlling the outcome of operations with a "slow resolution" of the surgical wound. The marker showed a good level of resolution in that, as already shown in the case of chronic inflammatory diseases, marked leukocytes are prevalently located on the site of infection.

Kaposi sarcoma and malignant lymphoma were successfully imaged with high purity liposomes containing indium-111 in two patients with AIDS. Gamma camera images of the patient with Kaposi sarcoma showed four discrete lesions along the left foot and calf with no foci along the right foot, and no uptake into clinically enlarged but non-neoplastic lymph nodes. The preparation is given of an 111indium-oxine complex that is non toxic and can label reproductively various types of cells. They retain the label for long periods (24 hours and more). This method gives parallel results for cell-mediated cytotoxicity measurements to Chromium-51 labelling and is found to have wider uses. It can label cells that release 51Cr too fast, makes possible long term measurements of cytotoxicity and accurate counts on small numbers of target cells.

These studies describe the application of a new method for following the migration of autologous lymphocytes in normal subjects and patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).
