Development of a culturally appropriate food guide for pregnant Caribbean immigrants in the United States.

Communities with large Caribbean immigrant populations in Boston, Mass, have alarmingly high rates of both infant mortality and low-birth-weight infants. Although the federally funded Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has been shown to increase infant birth weight and reduce fetal mortality, observations made in this study show that pregnant Caribbean immigrants who enrolled in WIC did not receive comprehensive, culturally appropriate nutrition counseling. Public health nutritionists and other health care providers used the Basic Four food group model as

Differentiation of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome and necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates by abdominal sonography.

OBJECTIVES: To summarize and differentiate abdominal ultrasound findings of necrotizing enterocolitis and food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome. METHODS: From January 2017 to December 2018, the abdominal ultrasound results of 304 cases diagnosed necrotizing enterocolitis or food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome were retrospectively analyzed. The presence of pneumatosis intestinalis, portal venous gas, bowel wall thickening, intestinal motility, focal fluid collections and hypoechoic change of gallbladder wall were calculated, and the results were compared and analyzed. RESULTS: P

The Australian Feeding Infants and Toddler Study (OzFITS 2021): Breastfeeding and Early Feeding Practices.

The Australian Feeding Infants and Toddler Study 2021 (OzFITS 2021) is a nationwide survey of Australian caregivers' infant and toddler feeding practices. Here, we describe breastfeeding rates and duration, use of breastmilk substitutes, and introduction of complementary (solid) foods, including common food allergens. Caregivers (n = 1140) were recruited by a digital marketing company and were interviewed using a structured telephone questionnaire to obtain information. Breastfeeding was initiated in 98% of infants, but the duration of exclusive breastfeeding to six months was less than 1%. Ne

Timing of Food Introduction and Allergy Prevention: An Update.

Recommendations about allergy prevention through diet are rapidly changing. In just the past several years, multiple organizations have provided updated guidance and recommendations about infant feeding based on recent studies and meta-analyses. In addition to the increased number of studies supporting the benefit of early introduction of allergenic foods, in particular peanut and egg, recent studies demonstrate that infant and maternal diet diversity may also reduce risk of food allergy and atopy. Skin emollients have not been found to be helpful in prevention of food allergy, and more eviden

Iron in food and its availability.

The iron stores of full-term, breast-fed infants become depleted by the age of 6 months, but this may occur earlier when they are fed formul … iron, both of which enhance the absorption of inorganic iron. The majority of commercially-prepared infant foods contain added iron and ascorbic acid, thereby providing sufficient absorbable iron for the growing infant. On the other hand, the results of the few studies that have been carried out on infants suggest that many unfortified vegetable and cereal me …

Survival of Salmonella Typhi and Shigella dysenteriae in dehydrated infant formula.

UNLABELLED: Powdered infant formula has previously been linked to the transmission of various bacterial pathogens in infants resulting in life-threatening disease and death. Survival studies of 2 common foodborne pathogens, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Shigella dysenteriae, in powdered infant formula have not been previously studied despite the potentially devastating consequences from ingestion of these organisms, particularly by newborns, in case of a natural or deliberate contamination event. Therefore, to better predict the risk of S. Typhi and S. dysenteriae infection from consum

Different Patterns of Foods Triggering FPIES in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy mainly affecting infants and young children. Allergic FPIES reactions differ from IgE-mediated food allergies, for example, regarding elicitors and clinical course. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to describe causative agents and development of tolerance in German children with FPIES. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective survey on children with FPIES from 14 centers in Germany assessing a 6-year period. RESULTS: We analyzed 142 patients with 190 FPIES reactions, 130 of wh

Interventions for the control of diarrhoeal diseases among young children: prevention of low birth weight.

The effect of low birth weight (LBW) on diarrhoea morbidity and mortality is analysed and interventions to increase birth weights are reviewed. Birth weight is a major determinant of infant mortality and, in developed countries at least, its effect on neonatal mortality is independent of socioeconomic status. We have located no satisfactory data on LBW as a determinant of diarrhoea mortality or morbidity. The strong association between LBW and mortality, however, makes it likely that there is an association between LBW and diarrhoea mortality in developing countries where diarrhoea is a major

Clinical spectrum of food allergy in children in Australia and South-East Asia: identification and targets for treatment.

The prevalence of atopic diseases is increasing worldwide for reasons that are not clear. Food allergies are the earliest manifestations of atopy. This review defines the foods most commonly involved in allergic reactions and identifies an emerging group of syndromes in which food allergy is involved. A study of the frequency of food allergies in Australia and South-East Asia has recently shown that egg, cow's milk and peanut are the most common food allergens in Australia, but there were divergent results from different regions of South-East Asia. It is not clear whether the differences in re

Terahertz Spectroscopic Analysis of Lactose in Infant Formula: Implications for Detection and Quantification.

Lactose plays a significant role in daily lives as a constituent of various food and pharmaceutical products. Yet, lactose intolerance conditions demand low-lactose and lactose-free products in the market. These increasing nutritional claims and labels on food products entail simple and reliable methods of analysis that can be used for meeting quality standards, nutritional claims and legal requirements. In this study, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was employed to analyse α-lactose monohydrate qualitatively and quantitatively in food products. Both absorption spectra and absorpt

Predictors of breast milk intake in rural northern Thailand.

A random sample of 52 mothers and infants from a rural area of Northern Thailand were studied in their homes for 48 h. Infants were breast fed on demand. Daytime feeds were test weighed with electronic averaging balances and nighttime intake estimated using a new method, Indirect Test Weighing. All feeds, both day and night, were timed to the nearest minute. Other variables measured by direct observation were infant weight, and supplementary food and water intake. Mean 24-h breast milk intake was 579 g (range 78-1,011 g) with a median between day coefficient of variation of 8.8%. The proportio

Botulism and tetanus: selected epidemiologic and microbiologic aspects.

Botulism is rare in both developing and developed countries. During 1980 only 89 cases (18 food borne, 68 infant, 2 wound, 1 unspecified) were reported in the United States. Coproexamination is essential for laboratory confirmation of infant botulism. Botulinal antitoxins of equine origin are used for treating food-borne and wound botulism but are usually not recommended for infant cases. Tetanus is much more common in some developing countries than in developed countries. During 1980 only 95 cases of tetanus were reported in the United States; in 68 (72%) of these cases, the patient was 50 ye

Childhood asphyxiation by food. A national analysis and overview.

Data on all identified food-related asphyxiations of infants and children aged 0 to 9 years in 41 states from 1979 to 1981 were analyzed by type of food and age of child. Nationally, one death occurred approximately every five days. More than 90% occurred in infants and children younger than 5 years and 65% in infants younger than 2 years. Round foods were most often mentioned of the 103 foods specifically identified on death certificates. Most frequently cited were hot dog products (17 cases, 17%), candy, ten; nuts, nine; and grapes, eight. Hot dogs caused deaths from infancy through 3 years

Association between timing of maternal energy consumption and adiposity in breastfeeding infants: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Lactating women's food intake timing may play a critical role in maternal and infant nutrition health. We aimed to examine associations of breastfeeding mothers' diet quantity and circadian timing of food intake with subsequent weight status of exclusively breastfed infants over a 6-month period. METHODS: This prospective observational study comprised pairs of healthy singleton breastfed infants and their corresponding healthy lactating mothers. Reported food intake times and diet content were used to define maternal eating patterns infant body mass index-for-age z scores (BAZs) a

Prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in exclusively breastfed infants after a 5-month iron supplementation.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is prevalent in exclusively breastfed (EBF) Thai infants. However, in Thailand, iron supplementation guidelines for EBF infants are not available. This prospective open-label study aimed to estimate the prevalence of IDA in 9-month-old EBF infants after receiving iron supplementation from 4 months of age until they consumed adequate iron-rich food. Forty-seven healthy, 4-month-old EBF infants were prescribed 1 mg/kg/day ferrous sulfate. Their complementary food records from 6 to 9 months were calculated for daily iron intake. Complete blood count and iron study wer

Maternal eating disorder and infant diet. A latent class analysis based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa).

Knowledge of infant diet and feeding practices among children of mothers with eating disorders is essential to promote healthy eating in these children. This study compared the dietary patterns of 6-month-old children of mothers with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and eating disorder not otherwise specified-purging subtype, to the diet of children of mothers with no eating disorders (reference group). The study was based on 53,879 mothers in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify discrete latent classes of

Timing of the introduction of complementary foods in infancy: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To increase knowledge on iron status and growth during the first 6 months of life. We hypothesized that iron status would be better in infants who received complementary foods in addition to breast milk compared with those exclusively breastfed. METHODS: One hundred nineteen healthy term (≥37 weeks) singleton infants were randomly assigned to receive either complementary foods in addition to breast milk from age 4 months (CF) or to exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months (EBF). Egg and cows' milk hypersensitivity in exclusively breast fed infants with eczema, and detection of egg protein in breast milk.

Forty nine eczematous infants who were still solely and exclusively breast fed and who had never received anything but breast milk were studied for evidence of sensitisation to foods. Thirty four similar infants without eczema formed a control group. The eczematous infants were divided into three groups according to clinical criteria: (1) definite atopic eczema; (2) possible atopic eczema; (3) atopic eczema unlikely. Twenty three infants showed cutaneous hypersensitivity to foods, usually egg and cows' milk. Seven of 14 infants in group 1 and nine of 20 in group 2 were sensitised compared with

Infant botulism in the age of botulism immune globulin.

Infant botulism causes acute bulbar dysfunction, weakness, and respiratory failure in infants living in endemic regions of the United States. Until Food and Drug Administration approval of botulism immune globulin (BIG) in October 2003, management of infant botulism had changed little since the 1970s. Currently, IV therapy with BIG is advised to shorten the duration and diminish the potential complications of the disorder. This review describes two decades of experience with infant botulism and provides a contemporary perspective on the role and benefit of BIG.
