Urinary tract infections.

The populations at risk for urinary tract infection include the newborn, particularly the premature, prepubertal girls, young boys, sexually … esence of leukocytes in the urine is of increasing diagnostic importance. Complicated urinary tract infections occur in neonates with such congenital anomalies of the urinary tract as urethral valves or in patients with neurologic disease resulting in urinary stasis. In older men or women, complicated urinary tract infections occur with obstruction, instrume …

Soft tissue infections.

Infections in soft tissues present with one or more of the cardinal signs of infections; however, presence of these signs may indicate manifestation of a deep systemic infection or of a noninfectious process. One of the earliest determinations to be made is whether the problem is likely to require patient admission or referral to another specialty. Only then is the primary management clear.

Superficial fungal infections.

Superficial fungal infections are problems frequently encountered by the pediatrician. Presentation can be quite varied as causative organisms, environment, patient characteristics and secondary infections can significantly alter the clinical picture. A brief review of these common infections with an approach to examination and diagnosis is presented, as well as updated treatment recommendations.

Serious pediatric infections.

Third-generation cephalosporins are important additions to the range of antibiotics available for treating children with serious bacterial infections. They are highly active against the common pathogens, which cause bacterial meningitis in children. Strains of Haemophilus influenzae type b resistant to both ampicillin and chloramphenicol, and Streptococcus pneumoniae relatively resistant to penicillin remain susceptible to cefotaxime and ceftriaxone. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobacter diversus, as well as the other more common gram-negative bacilli isolated from neonates and …

[Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections].

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pathogenic micro-organism frequently held responsible for acute respiratory infection. The disease is ubiquitous and often proceeds in epidemics among small communities of young people (families, army barracks, universities). Its usual clinical manifestations consist of a stubborn cough symptomatic of tracheo-bronchitis with or without fever, and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Cases where chest X-rays show a pulmonary infiltrate are less frequent, but they differ from other lung diseases in that the respiratory signs at physical examination are discreet

Human parvovirus infections.

Discovered by chance in 1974, the human serum parvovirus B19 is at present the only recognized, autonomous, pathogenic human parvovirus. For some years following its discovery, B19 was not associated with any defined clinical syndrome; although a high titre viraemia was often noted in infected individuals they were largely asymptomatic. In 1980 the causal association between B19 infection and aplastic crisis in chronic haemolytic anaemia began to emerge with the discovery of B19 as the agent responsible for aplastic crisis in sickle cell anaemia. This fulfilled the expectation of a disease of

Urinary tract infections.

Recent investigations into the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections has led to significant understanding in the interaction between uropathogens and the urogenital tract. From this understanding there is already the potential for new types of therapy. Reviewed here are these mechanisms since they offer future potential pragmatic approaches to infection. In addition, a practical approach to management of lower urinary tract infections in females is discussed, to provide a physician with methods to treat infection. Non-bacterial cystitis, or the urgency-frequency syndrome, also has new devel…
