Distribution of sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) species and efficiency of capturing methods in Sanliurfa province, Turkey.

The population dynamics of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were studied in Sanliurfa province in southeastern Turkey, in the country's largest focus of typical anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, during 2000-2002. Sand flies were collected at nine different sampling stations, located throughout the city, representing a cross section of urban and rural habitats. In total, 29,771 sand flies were collected, 45.35% of which were Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli. In this study, the overall sand fly species diversity, relative abundance of each species, biodiversity, and similarity indices among sa

[Absence of Lutzomyia longipalpis in some endemic visceral leishmaniasis areas in Rio de Janeiro municipality].

The first autochthonous case of human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro was diagnosed in 1977. Since 1980, 54 autochthonous cases have been diagnosed in various locations, and since 1993 some 17 autochthonous human cases have been reported. Eight of these occurred in the neighborhood of Barra de Guaratiba and the others were distributed in the following neighborhoods: Camorim, Colônia, Grota Funda, Grumari, Ilha de Guaratiba, and Carapiá. From September 1996 to December 1999, phebotomine sandfly captures were performed at 18 sites on the mountainsides of the Ped

Tsetse flies and their control.

The authors use a quantitative modelling framework to describe and explore the features of the biology of tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) which are important in determining the rate of transmission of the African trypanosomiases between hosts. Examples are presented of the contribution of previous research on tsetse to quantified epidemiological and epizootiological understanding, and areas of current ignorance are identified for future study. Spatial and temporal variations in risk are important (but rarely-studied) determinants of the impact of trypanosomiasis on humans, domestic animals and ag

Vector-borne diseases and their control.

Control of the vector is usually a crucial factor in control programs for tropical diseases spread by insect vectors. Successful control programs aim at vulnerable points in the interactions between the vector, the reservoir host, the pathogen, the human host, and the environment. The objective is to prevent potential transmission, or interrupt actual transmission, by reducing the abundance, longevity, or host contact of the vector--whichever is most appropriate to the particular pathogen or disease and the local situation. The importance of individual assessment in the light of local conditio

Displacements of Simulium damnosum and strategy of control against onchocerciasis.

Regular aerial treatment of 14 000 km of watercourses has achieved and maintained, over an area of 700 000 km2 of West African savannah, a very high degree of control of the larvae of Simulium damnosum sensu stricto and S. sirbanum, the vectors of onchocerciasis in this area. However, particular and relatively restricted parts of this area, mainly in northern Ivory Coast and neighbouring parts of Upper Volta, experience regular and prolonged reinvasions by parous female vectors, which have already taken bloodmeals (and many of them carrying the parasites) and arrive from unknown sources probab

Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae): Life History, Predatory Potential, and Rearing Method of Earwigs.

The earwig Doru luteipes (Scudder) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) is recognized as the most frequently encountered predatory insect species in maize agroecosystems across maize-producing regions of Brazil and other South American countries. For over three decades, the earwig has been extensively investigated through both field surveys and controlled laboratory studies aiming at biological control of insect pests. Although augmentative biological control strategies involving the release of D. luteipes have been proposed, the currently available data on its predatory behavior and efficiency remain s

Chitosan-based strategies as eco-friendly solutions for controlling Brettanomyces bruxellensis contamination in wine production.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the antimicrobial activity of chitosan against Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wine spoilage yeast responsible for producing volatile phenols that lead to undesirable sensory defects commonly referred to as "Brett" character. The most widely used antimicrobial compound in oenology is sulphur dioxide (SO2), due to its broad spectrum of action, but growing consumer demand for reduced chemical additives and evidence of Brettanomyces spp. resistance to it, have encouraged different alternative strategies. Among these, chitosan has been accepted for the control o

Animal models of anaphylaxis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review we will focus on recent advances in the role of mast cells in the pathophysiology of insect allergy and the possible mechanisms of mast cell activation in anaphylaxis. RECENT FINDINGS: Anaphylactic reactions in the mouse can be induced by several independent pathways involving immunoglobulin E, immunoglobulin free light chains, or immunoglobulin G. There is considerable evidence that mast cells play a central role in anaphylactic reactions to insect stings. Mast cells can be directly activated by components of insect venom or after allergic sensitization. Of

Iron-Sulfur Clusters: A Core Hub in Insect Energy, Reproduction, and Molting.

Iron-sulfur clusters are a class of functionally diverse protein cofactors. In recent years, significant progress has been made in insect research on iron-sulfur clusters, revealing that they serve as a core molecular hub that integrate multiple physiological processes. This review systematically summarizes the structural characteristics and biosynthetic pathways of iron-sulfur clusters, with an emphasis on insect-specific features in the stability of iron-sulfur cluster assembly proteins, cluster transfer mechanisms, and functional differentiation of ferredoxins. On this basis, it further elu

Chemical composition, Aedes mosquito larvicidal activity, and repellent activity against Triatoma rubrofasciata of Severinia monophylla leaf essential oil.

Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are key vectors in the spread of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika. Triatoma rubrofasciata is an "assassin bug" whose populations and association with humans have dramatically increased and may represent a serious health concern. Control of insect vectors is a logical course of action to prevent the spread of these insect-borne infections. This work presents the leaf essential oil composition, mosquito larvicidal activities, and insect-repellent activity of Severinia monophylla. The essential oil of S. monophylla from Vietnam was o

Novel selective and irreversible mosquito acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for controlling malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

We reported previously that insect acetylcholinesterases (AChEs) could be selectively and irreversibly inhibited by methanethiosulfonates presumably through conjugation to an insect-specific cysteine in these enzymes. However, no direct proof for the conjugation has been published to date, and doubts remain about whether such cysteine-targeting inhibitors have desirable kinetic properties for insecticide use. Here we report mass spectrometric proof of the conjugation and new chemicals that irreversibly inhibited African malaria mosquito AChE with bimolecular inhibition rate constants (k(inact)

Trypanosoma cruzi infection modulates the expression of Triatoma brasiliensis def1 in the midgut.

Antimicrobial peptides are an essential component of the insect immune system. One of the most ubiquitous is defensin, which has been identified in all examined insect orders. Triatoma brasiliensis (Heteroptera, Triatominae), the main Trypanosoma cruzi vector in semi-arid regions of north-eastern Brazil, expresses def1, a defensin encoding gene, predominantly in the anterior region (cardia and stomach) of the midgut. In the present study, we compared the transcript abundance of T. brasiliensis def1 in the anterior (stomach) and posterior midgut (small intestine) regions of naïve bugs with thos

A scorpion neurotoxin increases the potency of a fungal insecticide.

The low virulence of the insecticidal fungus Metarhizium anisopliae has stymied its widespread use in controlling insect pests. We show that high-level expression of an insect-specific neurotoxin from the scorpion Androctonus australis in hemolymph by M. anisopliae increases fungal toxicity 22-fold against tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) caterpillars and ninefold against adult yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) without compromising host specificity. Prelethal effects include reduced mobility and feeding of the insects targeted.

Evaluation of Aib and PEG-polymer insect kinin analogs on mosquito and tick GPCRs identifies potent new pest management tools with potentially enhanced biostability and bioavailability.

Insect kinins modulate aspects of diuresis, digestion, development, and sugar taste perception in tarsi and labellar sensilla in mosquitoes. They are, however, subject to rapid biological degradation by endogenous invertebrate peptidases. A series of α-aminoisobutyric (Aib) acid-containing insect kinin analogs incorporating sequences native to the Aedes aegypti mosquito aedeskinins were evaluated on two recombinant kinin invertebrate receptors stably expressed in cell lines, discovering a number of highly potent and biostable insect kinin mimics. On the Ae. aegypti mosquito kinin receptor, thr

A Conserved Planthopper MATH-BTB Protein Regulates Fecundity in Nilaparvata legens Stål.

The meprin and TRAF-C homology (MATH) family of proteins plays essential roles in diverse biological processes across eukaryotes. Fecundity is a key determinant underlying the rapid outbreaks of agricultural insect pests. Nevertheless, the potential involvement of MATH proteins in the regulation of fecundity in agriculturally important insects, particularly planthoppers, remains largely uncharacterized. This study identified key members of the MATH protein family that are conserved in planthoppers and involved in the regulation of insect fecundity. A total of 121 identified MATH proteins from

Omeprazole and its analogs exhibit insecticidal potencies as inhibitors of insect choline acetyltransferase.

Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) is crucial for acetylcholine synthesis and regulates diverse functions in numerous biological processes. Omeprazole, an inhibitor on human ChAT, was evaluated here on insect ChAT as a potential inhibitor, as well as its insecticidal potency on Nilaparvata lugens, a major insect pest on rice. The evaluation also included omeprazole analogs and α-NETA, in order to explore a superior leading compound targeting on insect ChAT. In toxicity test, α-NETA and omeprazole exhibited insecticidal activity, among which omeprazole exhibited activity with a mortality of aroun
