Association of Parental Divorce With Oral Health in U.S. Children and Adolescents.

Purpose: To examine the association between parental divorce or separation (PDS) and oral health outcomes in children and adolescents in the United States (U.S.), and learn whether the association was mediated by a lack of needed dental care in the past 12 months. Methods: Data obtained from a sample of individuals who participated in the 2020 to 2021 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), representing 65,790,496 U.S. children and adolescents, were analyzed. A child's exposure to PDS was the independent variable. The outcome of interest was pediatric oral health, measured through parenta

Oral health in professional Slovak soccer players: Assessment of dental risks, subgingival microbiota and genetic influences.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reveal high rates of dental issues among professional soccer players, worsened by poor hygiene, frequent sport drinks consumption and limited preventive care. Busy schedules, frequent relocations and changing clubs further disrupt dental routines, impacting performance and well-being. Therefore, we decided to assess the oral health status of professional Slovak soccer players and address these critical concerns. METHODS: We assessed the oral health of 51 male soccer players from two elite Slovak soccer clubs during 2023/2024 season. Data collection included two pape

Consensus Report: 2nd European Workshop on Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation for Oral Health Professionals.

Tobacco use has been identified as a major risk factor for oral disorders such as cancer and periodontal disease. Tobacco use cessation (TUC) is associated with the potential for reversal of precancer, enhanced outcomes following periodontal treatment, and better periodontal status compared to patients who continue to smoke. Consequently, helping tobacco users to quit has become a part of both the responsibility of oral health professionals and the general practice of dentistry. TUC should consist of behavioural support, and if accompanied by pharmacotherapy, is more likely to be successful. I

[Social disparities in dental health: measuring risks and health needs].

Our aim was to compare the dental health level of the general population to that of beneficiaries of universal health coverage (CMUC) in order to define their needs and to measure the dental health risk associated with precariousness. The study sample was composed of requests for prior approval in eight administrative regions. Accordingly, 3118 patients covered by the CMUC and 3310 beneficiaries of the general fund stricto sensu were examined by the fund's salaried dental advisors (chirurgiens-dentistes-conseils) and enrolled in the study. With a similar average DMF index, CMUC recipients had

Relationships between diabetes and medical and dental care costs: findings from a worksite cohort study in Japan.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between diabetes and medical and dental care costs from a 5-yr prospective observation of Japanese workers. The data were derived from health and dental examinations and health insurance claims of 4,086 workers aged 40-54 yr. At baseline, the subjects were assigned to four categories: known diabetes; undiagnosed diabetes; impaired fasting glucose (IFG); and non-diabetic. The differences in health care costs among the non-diabetics, IFG and undiagnosed diabetes groups were not seen at baseline, but the costs incurred by the subjects wi

Relevance of smoking interventions for dental clinic patients with smoking-related disease.

OBJECTIVES: Despite a decline in cigarette smoking in the United States, high rates persist among the socioeconomically underserved who consequently are at risk for smoking-related disease (SRD). Since academically affiliated dental clinics are more likely to encounter underserved patients, smoking interventions could address both the oral and systemic risks of continued smoking. To determine the relevance of providing smoking counseling in the context of SRD, this study examined the prevalence of smoking and its associations with socioeconomic status (SES), SRD and its sequela, and medication

Association Between Maxillary Frenum Attachment and Anterior Tooth Caries in Children: A South Texas Oral Health Network Pilot Study.

Purpose: This study investigated whether the position of the maxillary frenum is associated with the presence and severity of anterior tooth caries in children aged 6 to 36 months. Methods: Five dentists from the South Texas Oral Health Network (STOHN) assessed 319 children using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and classed frenum attachment. Results: Of 319 patient children, 170 (53.9%) exhibited no anterior caries, while 149 (46.1%) demonstrated varying levels of decay with higher caries grades observed in older children (P<0.001). Most participants (79%) were

The effect of pilocarpine on dental caries in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome: a database prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is associated with dental caries. Pilocarpine, a salivary stimulant, can improve the amount and flow rate of saliva in patients with pSS. This study aimed to assess whether the risk of dental caries decreases with the use of pilocarpine in patients with pSS. METHODS: For this prospective cohort study, we identified pSS patients from the catastrophic illnesses registry of the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan between 2009 and 2013. We divided participants into pilocarpine and non-user groups based on the pilocarpine prescriptions

Teledentistry and oral health in older adults - aspects for implementation of the "Patient centric solution for smart and sustainable healthcare (ACESO)" project.

P u r p o s e: Oral health and diseases are significant components of general health. However, oral health-care remains at the lowest of older patients' priorities. The inability to obtain dental care can result in progression of dental disease, leading to a diminished quality of life and overall health. Teledentistry (TD) provides an opportunity to improve the quality of oral health services. The aim of our narrative review was to analyze the usefulness of teledentistry as a part of telemedicine to improve oral health in the elderly. Materials/Methods: The PubMed database search was done for:

Are online search trends associated with changes in dental sealant utilization?: focusing on key influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: Dental sealants are an important preventive service for reducing occlusal caries in children and adolescents. As digital health information-seeking behaviors have become increasingly prevalent, online search activities may serve as indicators of population-level interest in preventive healthcare services. Understanding how online search trends relate to actual dental sealant utilization may provide valuable insights for public health planning. This study aimed to examine longitudinal trends in dental sealant utilization and online search activity in South Korea from 2016 to 2023 an

Changing factors and changing needs in women's health care.

The aforementioned social trends affecting women, including women in poverty, women in the labor force, and elderly women, are all ultimately related to problems of access to health care. In almost every age group, women use more health and medical services. Women are hospitalized more often, although their stays in hospitals tend to be shorter. Women also make more visits to health care providers for preventive health care, such as examinations and dental care. Access to care, however, is tied to ability to pay for the care. Medicaid payments for medical care are related to eligibility criter
