Equity, inclusion and cultural humility: contemporizing the neonatal intensive care unit family-centered care model.

Existing NICU family centered care models lack the key elements of equity, inclusion and cultural humility. These models were conceived to support families during the stressful life event of an infant's NICU admission. Their development, however, occurred prior to recognition of the medical field's systematic shortcomings in providing equitable care and their impact on outcome disparities for marginalized communities; thus, they do not include cultural or equitable healthcare considerations. Given the significant neonatal care inequities for marginalized groups, incorporating the experience of

Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in Canadian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs): where are we?

OBJECTIVES: Despite increased evidence that point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has the potential to improve patient care in many clinical areas, the extent of use and training in POCUS in Canadian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) has not been described in the literature. In this study, we aimed to explore the extent to which POCUS is being used and the need for a formal curriculum with defined POCUS competencies in the field of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM). METHODS: We sent a cross-sectional electronic survey to all NPM program directors and fellows in Canada. All 13 Canadian NPM prog

Newborn Care Curriculum: The Late Preterm Infant in the Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

INTRODUCTION: Late preterm births represent the largest category of preterm deliveries. Although these infants are frequently managed in normal newborn nurseries, they have an increased risk of readmissions and mortality. Thus, we designed this PowerPoint-based learning module to provide learners with a computer-based educational resource on late preterm infants in the level II neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: This module can be completed using the included pretest and posttest to assess for change in knowledge. The module should take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete. RESULTS

Outbreak of Candida parapsilosis in a neonatal intensive care unit: a health care workers source.

Nosocomial neonatal candidiasis is a major problem in infants, which require intensive therapy. The subjects of the present study were three preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the General Hospital "Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez". The infants developed Candida parapsilosis infection on the mean age of 13.6 day of life. Prior to fungemia, infants had received assisted ventilation and hyperalimentation through central venous catheter. Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer gene ruled out other Candida species and revealed that the eight isolates were C. paraps

Abnormal plasma neuroactive progestagen derivatives in ill, neonatal foals presented to the neonatal intensive care unit.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Increased levels of pregnanes have been reported in foals with neonatal maladjustment syndrome (NMS). These steroids may cross the blood-brain barrier and have depressive effects in the central nervous system leading to behavioural abnormalities and altered states of consciousness in affected foals. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the pregnane profile of foals with NMS and compare it with that of healthy controls and sick, non-NMS foals. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective-clinical study. METHODS: Thirty-two foals with a clinical diagnosis of NMS,

Neonatal Trichosporon beigelii infection: report of a cluster of cases in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Trichosporon beigelii, a ubiquitous yeast found in soil, causes superficial dermatologic infections in normal hosts and rare cases of disseminated disease among immunocompromised patients. Neonatal cases are exceptionally rare. We report a cluster of cases of T. beigelii infections in a tertiary care hospital in Rochester, NY, during May to July, 1991. Three cases occurred in very low birth weight premature infants (23 to 25 weeks of gestation), two of whom died. The organism was isolated from urine alone in one case, skin and blood in one case and blood, tracheal aspirate and central venous c

Developing practical clinical tools for predicting neonatal mortality at a neonatal intensive care unit in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains high in Tanzania at approximately 20 deaths per 1000 live births. Low birthweight, prematurity, and asphyxia are associated with neonatal mortality; however, no studies have assessed the value of combining underlying conditions and vital signs to provide clinicians with early warning of infants at risk of mortality. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors (including vital signs) associated with neonatal mortality in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), Mwanza, Tanzania; to identify the most accurate generalis
