Mental models at work: cognitive causes and consequences of conflict in organizations.

This research investigated the reciprocal relationship between mental models of conflict and various forms of dysfunctional social relations in organizations, including experiences of task and relationship conflicts, interpersonal hostility, workplace ostracism, and abusive supervision. We conceptualize individual differences in conflict construals as reflecting variation in people's belief structures about conflict and explore how different elements in people's associative networks-in particular, their beliefs about their best and worst strategy in conflict-relate to their personality, shape

The mediating effect of psychosocial factors on suicidal probability among adolescents.

Suicidal probability is an actual tendency including negative self-evaluation, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and hostility. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of psychosocial variances in the suicidal probability of adolescents, especially the role of mediating variance. This study investigated the mediating effects of psychosocial factors such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, stress, and social support on the suicidal probability among 1,586 adolescents attending middle and high schools in the Kyunggi Province area of South Korea. The relationship between depression and

Oscillating in and out of place: Experiences of older adults residing in homeless shelters in Montreal, Quebec.

Aging in place is desirable from the perspective of older adults and policy makers alike. However, the meaning of 'place' for adults experiencing homelessness has been largely overlooked. Addressing this gap, this constructivist grounded theory study discusses the meaning of place for 15 older adults residing in emergency homeless shelters in Montreal, Quebec. Findings revealed that four interrelated dimensions of place-that is, control, comfort, privacy, and security were instrumental in supporting participants' ability to feel in place across housed-homeless trajectories. Many felt out of pl

Co-occurrence of ego function change and symptomatic change in bulimia nervosa: a six-year interview-based study.

Low ego strength is theoretically thought of as causing difficulties in interpersonal relations and leading to the development of psychiatric symptomatology. Patients with bulimia nervosa were previously shown to have low ego strength and were studied to investigate whether gains in ego strength occur over time and are associated with improvement in symptoms. The average patient had an ego strength at a borderline level at index and at a neurotic level 6 years later. Less positive change in ego strength was associated with a low initial Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) Symptom score a long Time

Nursing care of the patient with spinal cord injury.

The rehabilitation process must begin at the onset of illness and include not only a cure for the immediate disorders but methods of preventing further disability, the general management of convalescence, and the ultimate return of the individual to his maximum health and efficiency. As a member of the rehabilitation team the nurse must recognize the patient as a human being and emotionally accept him, maintain good interpersonal relations with other team members, know what resources are available, and help to provide continuity of care when the patient is discharged. She must counsel and guid

Social anxiety and suicidal ideation: Test of the utility of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide.

Social anxiety is related to greater suicidality, even after controlling for depression and other psychopathology. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS; Joiner, 2005) proposes that people are vulnerable to wanting to die by suicide if they experience both perceived burdensomeness (sense that one is a burden to others) and thwarted belongingness (a greater sense of alienation from others). Socially anxious persons may be especially vulnerable to these interpersonal factors. The current study tested whether interpersonal IPTS components independently and additively mediate the

From defeat to non-suicidal self-injury: the roles of entrapment and interpersonal relationship patterns in adolescence.

INTRODUCTION: Based on the integrated motivational-volitional model and the functional theory of self-injury, this study examined the association between defeat and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with entrapment as a mediator and interpersonal relationship patterns as moderators. METHODS: Participants were 4,515 secondary school students (Mage = 15.24 years, SD = 1.66). Latent profile analysis was used to identify interpersonal relationship patterns across father-child, mother-child, peer, and teacher-student relationships. A moderated mediation model was then tested to examine t

Parental overprotection increases interpersonal sensitivity in healthy subjects.

The effect of parental rearing on interpersonal sensitivity was studied in 469 Japanese volunteers. Perceived parental rearing was assessed by the Parental Bonding Instrument, which consists of the factors of care and protection, and interpersonal sensitivity was measured by the Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure (IPSM). In male subjects, higher IPSM scores were related to higher scores of paternal protection (P < .01) and maternal protection (P < .05). In female subjects, higher IPSM scores were related to higher scores of maternal protection (P < .001). The present study suggests that in both

Interpersonal Predictors of Grief Among Caregivers of Persons With Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Family caregivers of persons with dementia experience grief as the care recipients' dementia advances. Here, we explore how various interpersonal factors hypothesized to relate to prolonged grief disorder (PGD) (e.g., perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness) and our micro-social theory of grief (e.g., relational deprivation, self-esteem-related social support) relate to caregiver dementia-related grief. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Baseline caregiver data (N = 69) from an National Institute on Aging funded randomized pilot trial evaluating a digital reminiscence plat

Drinking to Cope Motivation in College as a Predictor of Post-College Interpersonal Problems and Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that high levels of drinking to cope (DTC) motivation, independent of drinking level, might precede temporally proximal increases in negative affect and interpersonal stress. In the present study, we examined whether high levels of DTC motivation were related to these outcomes prospectively over a 5-year period. METHOD: We assessed college student drinkers first in college and then approximately 5 years later after leaving the college environment. At both time points participants reported depression symptoms in a one-time survey and daily drinking level, motives

Evaluating the role of visit audio recordings in triadic dementia care: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Effective interpersonal communication is associated with improved health-related outcomes, yet it is unclear to what extent this occurs in triadic clinic visits for persons living with dementia (PLWD) and few tools exist to characterize triadic interpersonal communication and assess its effectiveness. The objective of this project is to characterize the interpersonal communication that occurs during triadic visits for PLWD, examine how interpersonal communication is related to health outcomes and use this understanding to adapt an innovative clinic visit audio recording interventio

Stability and oscillation in interpersonal awareness: a clinical-developmental analysis.

This paper has examined the research questions and strategies used by those who attempt to study social development from a cognitive-developmental orientation. It began by pointing to the need to integrate the descriptive work done by social-cognitive developmental researchers with some of the approaches taken by clinical and social psychologists in studying the same general phenomenon: interpersonal relations. An issue-by-stage social-cognitive map developed on the basis of both conceptual and empirical investigations was described, as were some of the properties which defined these stages. F

Interpersonal Psychotherapy in the Chinese Cultural Context: Exploring the Problem Areas With Cultural Specificity.

This study explored the culturally specific manifestations of interpersonal psychotherapy's (IPT's) four problem areas within the Chinese cultural context. Synthesizing qualitative feedback from IPT training and clinical supervision involving approximately 500 Chinese mental health professionals (2018-2025), the analysis aimed to highlight how traditional values-such as collectivism, filial piety (xiao), and face (mianzi, or social reputation and dignity)-profoundly shape interpersonal distress. The specific cultural nuances examined included how complicated grief is often masked by male stoic

Interpersonal Distress as a Covariate of Mental Health in Depression: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis.

Although empirical studies have shown that interpersonal distress is related to mental health indicators in depression, there are no previous meta-analyses evaluating this association. We performed a systematic review and meta-analytic study to estimate the association between interpersonal distress and non-relational mental health indicators (NR-MHI) in depression. Following PRISMA criteria, we performed a systematic search on PubMed and PsycINFO. We conducted multilevel meta-analytic (i.e., random-effects) models to estimate a pooled correlation coefficient representing the strength of the a

Social connection among the unhoused in Northern Arizona.

Homelessness is a major public health issue in the US. Research shows that unhoused people face numerous challenges including social isolation and loneliness while simultaneously desiring and establishing social connections. We draw on research conducted from 2017 through 2019 at an emergency shelter in Northern Arizona. Methods included participant observation and 14 semi-structured interviews with shelter guests. Interviews explored childhood, social connections, work, and experiences of institutional and interpersonal care. Themes identified include adversity in early relationships, positiv

Enhancing global cancer care for sexual and gender minority populations: regional perspectives and global implications.

Little is known about cancer disparities faced by diverse sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations globally, with unique barriers in many low-income and middle-income countries. This Viewpoint examines the intersectional challenges faced by SGM groups across multiple settings in accessing high-quality equitable cancer care. In India, the Hijra population (a legally recognised third gender) experiences compounded discrimination due to stigma and socioeconomic marginalisation. SGM individuals in Kenya and Brazil grapple with interpersonal and institutional discrimination, as well as structur

Relations Between Anxiety Sensitivity and Attachment in Outpatients With Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by dysregulated emotion, interpersonal relationships, and impulsivity, and is putatively linked to a known transdiagnostic risk factor, anxiety sensitivity (AS). AS is a dispositional fear of the physical, cognitive, and/or social consequences of arousal-related somatic sensations. Gratz et al. (2008) demonstrated significantly higher AS in outpatients with BPD and a predictive value of AS over and above emotion dysregulation and impulsivity. The present study sought to extend these findings with a larger sample of outpatients with BPD by

Exploring the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders Using SCORS-G Ratings on Thematic Apperception Test Narratives.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in Section III of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) conceptualizes personality pathology as a combination of impairment (Criterion A) and traits (Criterion B). One measure used to develop Criterion A was the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale - Global Rating Method (SCORS-G), which is a multidimensional, object-relational clinician-rated measure of personality functioning. Although there are conceptual links between the AMPD and SCORS-G di

An Interprofessional Approach to Family-Centered Child Protective Services Referral: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Members of the trauma team often find themselves in a uniquely challenging position wherein their role on the care team may necessitate developing a working relationship with alleged or confirmed perpetrators of abuse. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-week-old admitted to the hospital with hyponatremia and evaluation for suspected child physical abuse. Specific details of the case were a barrier to communication and interactions between the patient's mother and the trauma nurse. This report will provide a discussion of takeaway lessons to support communication with this patient population.
