Ultrasonographic evaluation of visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat tissue before and after bariatric surgery.

Visceral fat is considered a key factor in the development of metabolic syndrome and other pathological conditions and diseases associated with obesity. Therefore, analysis of the dynamics of reducing the amount of abdominal visceral fat is important for evaluating the therapeutic effects of different modalities of obesity treatment, including bariatric surgery. In 53 obese patients visceral and subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue was measured by ultrasonography (US) before and after bariatric surgery, in the period of 1, 3, 6 months. At the same time, standard anthropometric parameters were

Development of the human retroperitoneal fasciae.

INTRODUCTION: Although the renal fascia (RF), ureteral sheath, lateroconal fascia (LF) and hypogastric nerve are critical landmarks for retroperitoneal surgery, their laminar relationships require clarification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Horizontal sections (hematoxylin-eosin staining) of human fetuses at two different developmental stages [9-12 (3 fetuses, crown-rump length, CRL 40-65 mm) and 20-25 weeks of gestation (9 fetuses, CRL 152-220 mm)] were compared. RESULTS: In the early-stage group, the pararenal space had already formed between the posterior RF and the transversalis fascia (TF). T

Pericardial fat accumulation in men as a risk factor for coronary artery disease.

An increment of abdominal visceral fat accumulation has been reported to be a coronary risk factor. We determined the predictive power of pericardial fat (Pfat) accumulation as intra-thoracic visceral fat, in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Among 251 (181 non-obese [body mass index<25], 70 obese [body mass index> or =25]) Japanese male patients who underwent computed tomography (CT), 128 (90 non-obese, 38 obese) patients were suffering from CAD. Pfat volume was determined by the sum of cross-sectional images 1cm thick from the atrial appendage to the apex over the diaphragm. Ab

Correlation between visceral fat area and ectopic fat deposition in young and middle-aged adults with overweight or obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic fat deposition in the liver and pancreas is common in people with overweight or obesity and shares metabolic riskfactors. The relationship between intrapancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) and hepatic fat deposition, and the mediating role of visceral fat, remain unclear. This study investigated their association and the influence of visceral adipose tissue in young and middle-aged adultswith overweight or obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 197 adults (aged 18-50 years) with overweight or obesity. Hepatic and pancreatic fat contents were quanti

IL-6 as an integrative biomarker of residual inflammation and visceral adiposity in psoriasis: a VAI threshold-dependent model.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis patients are frequently exposed to residual inflammation and visceral obesity, two factors that synergistically increase cardiometabolic risk. METHODS: We evaluated IL-6 as a potential integrative biomarker linking these pathways in a cross-sectional study including 80 patients with well-controlled skin disease and 20 matched healthy controls. Serum IL-6 was measured by ELISA, and visceral adiposity estimated using the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI). RESULTS: Psoriasis patients displayed significantly higher IL-6 than controls (38.1 pg/mL [35.5-41.3] vs. 21.4 pg/mL [1

Visceral and subcutaneous adiposity measurements in adults: influence of measurement site.

OBJECTIVE: Excess abdominal adiposity is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Computed tomography can be used to examine the visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) components of abdominal adiposity, but it is unresolved whether single-slice or multi-slice protocols are needed. RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURES: Nine computed tomography scans were obtained in the lumbar spine region of 24 adults. The nine slices were obtained at three intervertebral positions (L2-L3, L3-L4, and L4-L5) and at 7 mm above and below these locations. Intra-site and inter-site differences in SAT, VAT, total

Epicardial and Visceral Adipose Tissue and Global Longitudinal Strain: A Review of Cardiac Imaging Insights in Subclinical Myocardial Dysfunction.

Background: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) are increasingly recognized as relevant contributors to cardiometabolic alterations and subclinical myocardial dysfunction, independently of overall obesity. Their pathogenic role extends beyond simple fat accumulation, encompassing inflammatory activation, lipotoxicity, and altered myocardial metabolism. Objective: This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the relationships between VAT/EAT and myocardial strain parameters, with emphasis on subclinical cardiovascular risk detection and nutritional interve

Tregs in visceral adipose tissue up-regulate circadian-clock expression to promote fitness and enforce a diurnal rhythm of lipolysis.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) in nonlymphoid organs provide critical brakes on inflammation and regulate tissue homeostasis. Although so-called "tissue Tregs" are phenotypically and functionally diverse, serving to optimize their performance and survival, up-regulation of pathways related to circadian rhythms is a feature they share. Yet the diurnal regulation of Tregs and its consequences are controversial and poorly understood. Here, we profiled diurnal variations in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and splenic Tregs in the presence and absence of core-clock genes. VAT, but not splenic, Tregs up-r

Body composition from single versus multi-slice abdominal computed tomography: Concordance and associations with colorectal cancer survival.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) scans are routinely obtained in oncology and provide measures of muscle and adipose tissue predictive of morbidity and mortality. Automated segmentation of CT has advanced past single slices to multi-slice measurements, but the concordance of these approaches and their associations with mortality after cancer diagnosis have not been compared. METHODS: A total of 2871 patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed during 2012-2017 at Kaiser Permanente Northern California underwent abdominal CT scans as part of routine clinical care from which mid-L3 cross-sectio
