Rats with transections of subfornical organ (SFO) efferent projections failed to drink to intravenous angiotensin-II (AII) but responded to intracellular dehydration and water deprivation and suppressed drinking when food deprived. However, the transected rats were polydipsic and polyuric. Thus SFO efferent projections mediate AII-induced drinking and may be involved in the regulation of body fluid balance.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium intracellulare is a major etiological agent of Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare pulmonary disease (MAC-PD). However, the characteristics of the virulence of M. intracellulare and the in vivo chemotherapeutic efficacy remain unclear. In this study, we examined the virulence of nine M. intracellulare strains with different clinical phenotypes and genotypes in C57BL/6 mice.
RESULTS: We classified three types of virulence phenotypes (high, intermediate, and low) based on the kinetics of the bacterial load, histological lung inflammation, and neutrophilic infiltration.

First trimester prenatal diagnosis of I-cell disease (1 case) was based on demonstration of profound deficiency of N-acetylglucosamine 1-phosphotransferase in chorionic villi and in cultured trophoblasts derived from the chorionic villus specimen. BACKGROUND: Cerebral oedema is a rare but life-threatening complication of diabetic ketoacidosis in children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This paper presents a case report on an infant with diabetic ketoacidosis and in an extreme hyperosmolar and hypernatremic state.
