Histological examination and rabbit intratesticular inoculation of clinical specimens are traditionally used to diagnose syphilis and characterize the aetiological agent, Treponema pallidum. When guinea pigs were sensitized to tuberculin by exposure to complete Freund's adjuvant the size of the intradermal PPD test was positively correlated to the body weight of the animal. Old Tuberculin showed stimulating effect in a subsequent sensitization to merthiolate (thimerosal). The high frequency of delayed cutaneous allergy to merthiolate in Swedish population is probably explained by sensitization through intradermal testing with tuberculin containing merthiolate as a preservative.

Five mares and a stallion were studied from three to 30 months after experimental infection with Brucella abortus strain 544. The mares bred normally. No organisms were recovered from horses or from pregnant Friesian heifer contacts. Titres of serum antibody in the antiglobulin (Coombs) and complement fixation tests fell more slowly than those assessed by other tests. The serum of one foal yielded maternal antibody. An intradermal test was positive in infected adults only, and negative in all foals.

We have studied the diagnostic reliability of the specific skin tests done in 30 subjects who presented with chronic bronchitis (CB) as the only clinical manifestation related to exposure to pigeons and in 21 subjects with CB and known risk factors. Additionally, two control groups were included (24 asymptomatic subjects exposed and sensitized to pigeons and 10 subjects not exposed and not sensitized to pigeons). In evaluating adverse drug reactions (ADRs), patch tests (PTs), skin prick tests (SPTs), and intradermal tests (IDTs) are useful tools for identifying responsible drugs and finding safe alternatives. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with a background of autoimmune polyglandular syndrome, who developed a type I immediate hypersensitivity reaction to intramuscular cyanocobalamin. Intradermal testing showed a positive reaction to cyanocobalamin. The patient was subsequently treated with intramuscular hydroxycobalamin after negative intradermal testing to this alternative B(12) compound. A review of previously described cases of hypersensitivity to either compound provides a rationale for the management of this rare but serious side-effect.
