In this study, we demonstrate for the first time, that a discrete metal-oxo cluster α-/β-K6P2W18O62 (WD-POM) exhibits superior performance as a computed tomography (CT) contrast agent, in comparison to the standard contrast agent iohexol. Swelling of the submandibular, sublingual and/or parotid glands ("iodide mumps") is an uncommon complication to intravascular administration of contrast material. The etiology remains unclear, but the reaction seems to be idiosyncratic or related to toxic accumulation of iodide in the ductal systems of the salivary glands. The introduction of nonionic contrast media has not eliminated the risk of developing iodide mumps. The first reported case of iodide mumps after intravascular administration of iopromide (Ultravist 300) is presented.

We have described what we believe to be the first published case of a reaction to radiographic contrast medium followed by a diffuse eosinophilic pneumonia. This association seems to confirm what is know about the immunologic mechanisms of such reactions, and though further verification of causation is needed, we found it to be the most plausible explanation.

Between 1996 and 2005, two of seven infants in our unit on overnight continuous-cycle peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) acquired hypothyroidism following normal thyroid function on neonatal screening. The effects of x-ray contrast media on signal intensities were studied. Relaxation times of myelographic contrast media were measured. Whereas relaxation times of Amipaque were longer, compared to CSF, the relaxation times of Duroliopaque, Omnipaque und Solutrast were significantly shorter than that of CSF. Therefore, the qualitative and quantitative effects of different contrast media on signal intensities varied. Most notable was the increase of signal intensity on T1-weighted images due to oily contrast media.
