AIMS: To describe the clinical features, imaging characteristics, histopathology, treatment and outcomes of intraocular medulloepithelioma.
METHODS: Medical records of 11 patients with clinically or histopathologically confirmed medulloepithelioma were retrieved and reviewed. Clinical features, diagnostic challenges, imaging characteristics, management, histopathology and prognosis were assessed.

The authors emphasize a special feature of the malignant melanoma of the ciliary body when invading the anterior chamber angle: the displacement of the iris root towards the back, with localized deepening of the anterior chamber. The clinico-pathologic correlation is shown by slit lamp and light microscopy pictures.

The right eye of a 1-year-old black infant with a painful blind eye was studied histologically. It contained a tumor at an advanced stage of growth. The tumor consisted of moderately large, round, and elongated undifferentiated cells and anaplastic cells with mitotic figures combined with multilayered, poorly differentiated epithelial cells that resembled the medullary epithelium of embryonic retina. Strap cells with cross striation typical of striated muscle were also present, together with islands of hyaline cartilage and areas of calcification.

A patient with spindle melanoma involving the iris and ciliary body refused enucleation at the time of diagnosis in 1933. The eye developed painful glaucoma 13 years later and was enucleated. Histopathologic examination indicated spread of the tumor intrasclerally and subconjunctivally. The patient is still alive without evidence of metastases, 32 years after enucleation and 45 years after initial diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the results of partial lamellar sclerouvectomy (PLSU) for anteriorly located uveal tumours.
METHODS: We reviewed the tumour features, histopathologic findings, complications, visual acuity outcomes, eye preservation, metastasis, and mortality data of 56 cases with uveal tumours who underwent PLSU between February 1999 and February 2019.
RESULTS: The mean largest tumour base diameters were 5.8 × 3.4 mm and the mean tumour thickness was 3.3 mm. Histopathologically, 30 (53.6%) eyes had malignant melanoma, 13 (23.2%) had nevus, 5 (8.9%) had iris stromal cyst, 4 (7.1%)

Although metastases from malignant melanomas of the ciliary body and choroid are common, similar tumors from the iris are rare. In this article seven such cases are described. They represent 3.5% of 196 cases in our files that were followed up for a minimum of five years where the tumor was confined to the iris and did not involve the ciliary body or the choroid. A 70-year-old man presented with an apparent focal iris ciliary body mass and increased intraocular pressure. Fine needle aspiration biopsy 180 degrees from the main lesion demonstrated uveal melanoma cells in the angle. The eye was enucleated, and multiple separate iris and ciliary body melanomas were noted. This case demonstrates the usefulness of fine needle aspiration biopsy for both diagnosis and optimum therapy in selected cases.
