Cystinuria is a common recessive disorder of renal reabsorption of cystine and dibasic amino acids that results in urolithiasis of cystine. Because individual case reports indicate a high morbidity rate, the aim of this retrospective study was a detailed analysis of this rare anatomical variant.

From September 1988 to April 1989, 400 patients with stones in the calix (40%), in the renal pelvis (45%), in the ureter (15%) and with staghorn calculi (5%), underwent shock wave treatment. In the majority of patients therapy was carried out with general anesthesia. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The existence of upper urinary tract calculus may cause complete loss of renal function, which eventually results in nephrectomy. Our purpose was to describe the prevalence and clinical characteristics of upper urinary tract calculus cases among a series of patients undergoing nephrectomy during a 10-year period.

A case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis is added to those so far reported. Association with long standing chronic infection and large renal calculi is emphasized.
