The Arabic development of Syrian refugee children (N = 133; mean age = 9;4 at Time 1) was examined over 3 time periods during their first five years in Canada. Children were administered sentence repetition and receptive vocabulary tasks in English and Arabic, and information about age-of-arrival (AOA), schooling in Arabic and language environment factors was obtained via parent report. Older AOA was associated with superior Arabic abilities across time, but regardless of AOA, children showed plateau/attrition patterns in Arabic and shifts to English dominance by Time 3. Increases in English o…

Background: This study investigates the language development of children at risk for developmental language disorder (DLD) 2 years after initial assessment and evaluates the impact of parental training on language outcomes. Methods: Sixteen children (9 boys and 7 girls) who were at risk for DLD 2 years ago and whose parents were trained after the initial assessment were re-evaluated. During the study period, children's language development was evaluated using the Denver II Developmental Screening Test and the Turkish Adaptation of the Test of Early Language Development (TEDIL). Parents' percep…

BACKGROUND: Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have a significant deficit in spoken language ability which affects their communication skills, education, mental health, employment and social inclusion.
AIM: The present study reports findings from a survey by EU network COST ACTION 1406 and aims to explore differences in service delivery and funding of SLT services for children with DLD across Europe and beyond.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: The survey was completed by 5024 European professionals. COST countries were grouped into Nordic, Anglo-Saxon, Continental, Mediterranean, Cen…

Articles in this issue examine (1) the primary sources of variability in reading and language achievement among Spanish-speaking English learners (ELs) in the United States, (2) the extent to which poor performance at the end of grade 2 is identifiable in developmental trajectories beginning in kindergarten, (3) the relations among core reading constructs of phonological awareness and decoding in both English and Spanish and the factors that affect their relationship, (4) the performance of different approaches to identification and the factors that influence how well they work, as well as (5)…

The present study was aimed at investigating literacy skills in English as a foreign language in three different groups of children: monolinguals with dyslexia (n = 19), typically developing bilinguals (language-minority) (n = 19) and a control group of monolinguals (Italian) (n = 76). Bilinguals were not expected to fail in English measures, and their gap with monolinguals would be expected to be limited to the instructional language, owing to underexposure. All participants were enrolled in Italian primary schools (fourth and fifth grades). A non-verbal reasoning task and Italian and English…

The critical period for language acquisition is often explored in the context of second language acquisition. We focus on a crucially different notion of critical period for language, with a crucially different time scale: that of a critical period for first language acquisition. We approach this question by examining the language outcomes of children who missed their critical period for acquiring a first language: children who did not receive the required language input because they grew in isolation or due to hearing impairment and children whose brain has not developed normally because of t…

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that children score better in language tasks using sung rather than spoken stimuli. We examined word detection ease in sung and spoken sentences that were equated for phoneme duration and pitch variations in children aged 7 to 12 years with typical language development (TLD) as well as in children with specific language impairment (SLI ), and hypothesized that the facilitation effect would vary with language abilities.
METHOD: In Experiment 1, 69 children with TLD (7-10 years old) detected words in sentences that were spoken, sung on pitches extracte…

Hemispheric language dominance, as determined by intracarotid short-acting barbiturate injections (Wada testing), was retrospectively evaluated in 44 right-handed patients with medically intractable left (n=26) or right (n=18) temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Atypical hemispheric language dominance (right or bilateral) was revealed in 13.6% of all patients investigated. A significantly higher rate of deviance from complete left hemisphere dominance was observed in left TLE (23.1%) than in right TLE (0%). Patient age at the time of seizure onset was proven a critical variable affecting atypical sp…

A community-based investigation of the nature, characteristics and evolution of speech and language delay in a sample of 3-year-olds is being carried out in Cambridgeshire. 1936 parents completed a preschool language checklist (PLC) to identify children at risk of language difficulties. Two hundred and seventy-seven children at risk together with 148 controls completed a series of preliminary face-to-face standard language tests to determine expressive, receptive and phonological skills. Concordance between the Cambridge Language and Speech Project (CLASP) identification and speech therapy inv…

The idea of computationally approximating human behavior is being reshaped by the emergence of large language models (LLMs). Although LLMs do not explain the mechanisms of human behavior, they can potentially stand in for humans-giving rise to new applied and scientific uses. Here we analyze research from multiple disciplines that explicitly or implicitly use LLMs as human proxies and organize them into four roles: believable agents, task agents, experimental subjects and silicon samples. By comparing the roles, we show that similarity to humans is not a single feature: each supports a differe…

Approximately one-fifth of patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) develop severe forms, which are associated with high mortality rates, making early prediction of severity crucial for effective patient management. In this study, we present APSevLM (Acute Pancreatitis Severity Language Model), a large language model (LLM)-based approach that integrates admission-time clinical data, imaging reports, and expert knowledge to predict AP severity at an early stage. Through a comprehensive evaluation using data from over five hundred patients, APSevLM outperforms traditional scoring systems (BISAP and…

Participation in neonatal randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is associated with improved or equivalent outcomes for infants and is widely viewed as a cornerstone of high-quality neonatal care. Equitable access to research participation is therefore essential to scientific validity, ethical integrity, and generalizability. Although substantial efforts have focused on improving the representation of racial and ethnic minority groups in neonatal research, the inclusion of families who speak languages other than English remains inadequately examined. In this perspective, we synthesize existing ev…

Although critical to enacting change, effectively communicating clinical and public health research results remains a challenge. In a webinar that occurred on December 7, 2023, a group of clinical and public health researchers and communications specialists convened to share their experiences using plain language materials to communicate research results. Herein, they provide practical guidance and case examples of lay summaries, infographics, data dashboards, and zines, along with challenges and potential solutions. Discussion illuminated the critical importance of partnering with communities…

RATIONALE: Serotonergic psychedelics are being studied as novel treatments for mental health disorders and as facilitators of improved well-being, mental function, and creativity. Recent studies have found mixed results concerning the effects of low doses of psychedelics ("microdosing") on these domains. However, microdosing is generally investigated using instruments designed to assess larger doses of psychedelics, which might lack sensitivity and specificity for this purpose.
OBJECTIVES: Determine whether unconstrained speech contains signatures capable of identifying the acute effects of p
