Provisional Structures of the Larva of Nipponomicrura sp. (Nemertea, Pilidiophora).

Nemertea is a phylum of predominantly marine worms that exhibit various larval forms, including the iconic pilidium. Pelagic lecithotrophic pilidia are considered more derived than pelagic planktotrophic pilidia, but data on the structure of lecithotrophic larvae are limited to the light-optical level. Here, we study the lecithotrophic reversed Iwata's larvae of an undescribed heteronemertean, Nipponomicrura sp. Using transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy with F-actin, acetylated α-tubulin, and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) labeling, the provisional structur…

Cutaneous larva migrans following a leech bite: A brief report.

Background: Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a zoonotic dermatosis usually acquired through direct contact with contaminated soil. We describe what appears to be the first reported case of CLM following a leech bite.

[Visceral larva migrans syndrome and hepatic abscess: A case report].

Toxocariasis canis or catis is a zoonotic infection disseminated in humans. Human beings can act as non-natural hosts in which the parasite can survive for long periods of time and they become infected by the ingestion of geohelminth eggs. These can be located on the ground, playgrounds and children's games, and are mostly eliminated by dogs or cats. There are different spectra in the clinical presentation of this infection, which can vary from an asymptomatic host to the production of serious organic lesions; some of them are ocular toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans, covert toxocariasis an…

Tropical dermatology: cutaneous larva migrans, gnathostomiasis, cutaneous amebiasis and trombiculiasis.

In today's world, many people can travel easily and quickly around the globe. Most travel travel-related illnesses include fever, diarrhea, and skin disease, which are relatively uncommon in returning travelers. We review four of the most common emerging infestations and skin infections in the Americas, which are important to the clinical dermatologist, focusing on the clinical presentation and treatment of cutaneous larva migrans, gnathostomiasis, cutaneous amebiasis, and trombiculiasis.

Cutaneous larva migrans masquerading as tinea corporis: a case report.

A 25-year-old male was seen with complaints of itchy skin lesions over left thigh. On examination multiple annular scaly plaques with wavy borders, peripheral papules and central clearing was seen. Closer examination revealed multiple forked tracts with excoriated papules. A diagnosis of cutaneous larva migrans was made and the patient treated using T.Albendazole 400 mg twice daily for 7 days which resulted in complete clinical cure.

Eosinophilic abscesses: a new facet of hepatic visceral larva migrans.

Hepatic visceral larva migrans (VLM) refers to a condition characterized by granulomatous liver lesions containing eosinophils and inflammatory cells associated with migration of second-stage larvae of certain nematodes such as toxocara canis. The typical imaging findings described in the literature include small, ill-defined, oval or elongated, low-attenuating nodules with fuzzy margins, non-spherical shape, and absent or insignificant rim enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT scan. The present series in contrast depicts a new imaging manifestation of hepatic VLM presenting as confluent and clu…

Strongyloidiasis presenting as larva currens 38 years after presumed exposure.

BACKGROUND: We present a case of strongyloidiasis presenting as larva currens 38 years after potential exposure in a country with what is typically thought of as low epidemiologic risk. CONCLUSION: This case highlights several important features of strongyloidiasis, including its varied epidemiology, long incubation period, and cutaneous manifestations.

MRI findings of spinal visceral larva migrans of Toxocara canis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the MRI findings of visceral larva migrans (VLS) of Toxocara canis in spinal cord. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed spinal MRI findings in eight patients with serologically proven Toxocara canis between 2005 and 2008. We evaluated the location, length, extent and migration of the lesion, MR signal intensity (SI), enhancement pattern, and swelling of the spinal cord. We evaluated clinical features including presenting symptoms and signs and treatment response. RESULTS: Total 8 patients (M=8; age range 36-79 years) were inc…

Epidemiological survey of cestode-larva disease in Greek sheep flocks.

The epidemiological status of hydatidosis, cysticercosis, and gid in sheep and the production practices of sheep farmers that increase the risk of exposure of sheep to infecting agents of these diseases were investigated in Thessaly, central Greece during 2002-2006. A total of 700 hoggets (sheep up to the age of 1 year) and 1500 adult sheep were examined randomly at an abattoir survey and the prevalences of hydatidosis and cysticercosis were found 39.32% and 29.41%, respectively. Hoggets had significantly lower prevalences of hydatidosis and cysticercosis compared to adult sheep (p<0.001). The

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans is caused by the migration of animal hookworm larvae in the human skin. The disease mainly occurs in resource-poor communities in the developing world, but it is also reported sporadically in high-income countries and in tourists who have visited the tropics. Diagnosis is made clinically in the presence of a linear serpiginous track moving forward in the skin, associated with itching and a history of exposure. Itching is typically very intense and can prevent patients from sleeping. Bacterial superinfection occurs as a result of scratching. Treatment is…

Myocarditis associated with visceral larva migrans due to Toxocara canis.

A 26-year-old man who was diagnosed with myocarditis presented eosinophilia after having eaten raw meat several times before the admission. Since the antibody titer against Toxocara canis was high, we diagnosed that he had visceral larva migrans due to Toxocara canis associated with myocarditis and eosinophilia. He was then treated with oral albendazole and prednisolone for 4 weeks and eosinophil count and hepatic enzymes were normalized along with the decrease in the antibody titer. We consider that his myocarditis was probably caused by direct larval migration and/ or by hypersensitivity rea…

A human case of gastric infection by Pseudoterranova decipiens larva.

We report a case of gastric pseudoterranoviasis proven by gastrofiberscopy on Dec. 13, 1994. The 34-year-old male patient, residing in Chungju-shi, was admitted to Konkuk University Hospital complaining of prickling epigastric pain. The symptoms suddenly attacked him two days after eating raw marine fish at Chonan-shi. By the gastrofiberscopic examination, a long white-yellowish nematode was found from the fundus region of stomach. The worm was 34.50 x 0.84 mm in size, and was identified as a 3rd stage larva of Pseudoterranova decipiens judging from the position of the intestinal cecum. This i…
