[Cutaneous larva migrans in children in a school of center-western Brazil].

This paper reports an outbreak of cutaneous larva migrans in children of a school located in Campo Grande, MS. Six out of the 16 students (37.5%) acquired this parasitic dermatitis in two playgrounds contaminated by cat feces, in which ancylostomid larvae were found. The serpiginous lesions and/or papules were located in the hands, feet, buttocks, thighs, vulva and scrotum. Control measures of this parasitosis are discussed.

[Vacation souvenirs: inoculation pathologies (cutaneous larva migrans, cutaneous leishmaniases, Lyme disease, rickettsioses)].

Residents of western countries travel more and more to (sub)tropical areas for holidays or work. During their stay they come in contact with insects and parasites susceptible to induce skin disorders that can manifest during their stay or after returning. This dermatosis account for approximatively 10% of referral to outpatient tropical clinics. The aim of this paper is to provide family physicians not familiar with these pathologies some practical guidelines to help them to identify and treat some tropical dermatosis: cutaneous larva migrans, cutaneous leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, rickettsios…

Cerebrospinal nematodiasis and visceral larva migrans in an Australian (Latham's) brush turkey.

Cerebrospinal nematodiasis and visceral larva migrans were diagnosed in an Australian (Latham's) brush turkey (Alectura lathami) that died at the Indianapolis Zoo following a progressive neurologic disease. Histologically, multifocal areas of malacia, necrosis, and inflammation were seen in sections of cerebrum, cerebellum, and midbrain; lesions were most severe in the cerebellum. A large granuloma in a lung contained cross sections of a large ascarid larva identified as Baylisascaris. The CNS lesions were typical of larval migration, as documented in other avian species. An epizootiologic inv…

Mitogenic response to Toxocara antigen and chemotactic defect in visceral larva migrans.

A 3-year-old girl had the typical features of visceral larva migrans syndrome, including hypereosinophilia, recurrent pulmonary infiltrates, and elevated serum IgG, IgE, and isohemagglutinin titers. A marked mitogenic response of her cultured lymphocytes to Toxocara antigen but not to Ascaris antigen was found. A neutrophil chemotactic abnormality ot Escherichia coli culture filtrates and zymosan-activated sera was also demonstrated, which partially corrected after she was treated with diethylcarbamazine citrate.

Cutaneous Larvae Migrans Treated with a Single Dose of Ivermectin.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a clinical diagnosis based on a history of exposure to contaminated soil and is associated with a characteristic red serpiginous lesion that migrates within the epidermis. Our patient presented with a red, tortuous migratory rash with localized pruritus on the left plantar foot of 1-month duration. He lacked recent travel history outside the southeastern United States. Upon admission, he presented with peripheral blood eosinophilia, an uncommon feature of HrCLM. A single dose of ivermectin was sufficient for treatment, and symptoms resolved w…

Effect of Arum rupicola Boiss rupicola Extracts on Visceral Larva Migrans in Mice.

PURPOSE: In the present study, the effects of leaf and rhizome extracts of Arum rupicola Boiss rupicola were searched on the infective stage Toxocara canis larvae (L3) in the experimentally infected mice. METHODS: Four-six week-old male BALB/c mice were divided into eight groups (G1-8, each group consisted of 7 mice), and they were infected orally with 500 T. canis eggs with L3. After 24 h, the following treatment protocol was applied to the groups for five days: G-1: Albendazole (ABZ) (100 mg/kg), G-2: Leaf Extract (10 mg/mL) + ABZ (100 mg/kg), G-3: Leaf Extract (40 mg/mL) + ABZ (100 mg/kg),

Atypical Toxocara canis-Induced Hepatic Visceral Larva Migrans: Diagnostic Challenges and Literature Review.

Toxocariasis, a zoonotic infection transmitted by Toxocara canis (from dogs) and Toxocara cati (from cats) larvae, poses rare but severe risks to humans. We present a case of hepatic visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by Toxocara canis in a 21-year-old male with a history of close contact with a pet dog. Initial symptoms and imaging findings mimicked a pyogenic liver abscess. The initial laboratory investigations revealed neutrophilia and elevated levels of IgE. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics, persistent fever prompted further investigation. Subsequent serological testing for Toxocara ant…

Cutaneous larva migrans in a child: a case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a dermatitis caused by the invasion and migration of parasitic larvae of hookworms, primarily affecting tropical and subtropical regions. This report presents a case of CLM in a Nepali child and provides an overview of the literature on this condition. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old boy from a rural area in Nepal presented with a pruritic skin lesion on his left foot, initially misdiagnosed as fungal infection. The lesion gradually expanded, forming a serpiginous erythema, and became intensely pruritic. The patient's family had poor socioeconomic cond…

Liver abscesses caused by visceral larva migrans: Aimless wanderer separated from the host.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a systemic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by migration of the second stage larva through viscera of humans. Despite being a foremost public health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as India, larva migrans remains an untended zoonosis. Here, we report two cases of VLM who presented with fever and abdominal pain for a prolonged duration. On further investigation, marked peripheral eosinophilia with multiple confluent necrotizing eosinophilic granulomas were identified on histopathological examination of the liver.

Autochthonous Hookworm-Related Cutaneous Larva Migrans Disease in Northeastern Italy: A Case Report.

Here we report the case of a 42-yr-old patient who presented himself to us with a serpiginous erythematous lesion from the wrist of the right forearm up the arm to the right shoulder A similar lesion of a smaller size was also present in the left forearm. On the basis of clinical manifestations and progression of the lesion, combined with previous treatments and different diagnostic investigations, hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) disease was hypothesized. Albendazole was employed as treatment and the resolution of the symptoms confirmed the diagnosis. The relevance of the repo…

Visceral larva migrans associated with earthworm ingestion: clinical evolution in an adolescent patient.

A 16-year-old girl developed a cough, hypereosinophilia (absolute eosinophil count: 32000/mm3), hypergammaglobulinemia, and multiple noncavitary pulmonary nodules 1 month after having ingested an earthworm on a dare. Spirometry revealed moderate restriction and reduced gas diffusion. Parabronchial biopsy demonstrated eosinophilic organizing pneumonitis with multiple eosinophilic microabscesses, and Toxocara titers were elevated (>1:4096). Ophthalmologic examination ruled out ocular larva migrans. The patient received a 10-day course of albendazole (400 mg orally twice daily) and demonstrated s…

Liver lesions of visceral larva migrans due to Ascaris suum infection: CT findings.

The purpose of this study was to analyze computed tomographic (CT) findings of hepatic lesions due to Ascaris suum infection. CT of the live … ocated in periportal (16 of 25) or subcapsular (six of 25) regions. Hepatic nodules due to visceral larva migrans of A. suum were located mainly in periportal or subcapsular regions, which may represent periportal eosinophilic granuloma, its pathologic feature. The results were considered to represent the pathophysiology of this entity.

Cross-reactivity between Anisakis simplex sensitization and visceral larva migrans by Toxocara canis.

The aim of this work was to study cross-reactivity in the diagnosis of two related ascaridosis. Nineteen patients diagnosed with recidivous acute urticaria (RAU) caused by Anisakis simplex and 26 patients diagnosed with visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by Toxocara canis were studied employing commercial diagnostic kits and "in house" assay kits. Cross-reactivity observed was greater when using "in house" assay kits, suggesting that T. canis excretory-secretory antigens were not only recognized by antibodies from patients with RAU but with greater intensity compared to the A. simplex excreto…
