INTRODUCTION: Acne vulgaris is common dermatologic condition with an estimated prevalence of 70 to 87%. Acne has been shown to have a significant impact on patient quality of life and mental health, especially as inflammatory lesions typically occur on cosmetically sensitive areas with the potential for permanent scarring. There have been numerous advances in the treatment of inflammatory acne with light-based and laser devices.

The experience obtained with 789 laser interventions used in oral surgery is summarized. A comparison of effects of surgical treatment of two groups of patients with obstruction of bile ducts of benign genesis was made. In the 1st group (91 patients) the intravenous laser irradiation of blood was used. In the 2nd group (93 patients) the laser irradiation was not performed. The authors consider that the intravenous laser irradiation of blood in the surgical treatment of patients with obstruction of bile ducts of non-tumor etiology contributes to reduction of the amount of complications and less lethality rate.

After development and experimental approval of suitable equipment for endoscopic and external use, the neodymium-YAG laser has been used routinely to treat tumors of the bladder and external genitalia in our department. A 2-year followup of 60 patients revealed a significant decrease in local bladder tumor recurrence (5 per cent). Successful laser therapy also was applied in cases of stage T1/T2 penile carcinomas, female urethral carcinomas and condylomata acuminata. Laser application offers an additional useful therapeutic procedure in the treatment of urological malignancies.

The performances of the diode-pumped CW and free running pulsed (Q-CW) 3-μm Er:YLF lasers, operating at room and cryogenic temperatures (RT and LNT), were compared theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that cryogenic cooling considerably enhances laser output power and efficiency in both modes of operation. On the other hand, our prediction for a Q-switched mode is that cryogenic performance can be so severely limited by amplified spontaneous emission (for some gain element designs) that the RT Q-switching may result in substantially higher pulse energies, albeit at lower efficiency.
