Treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum using a pulsed dye laser: a prospective clinical trial in 38 cases.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported positive results of nonablative laser treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum, but the published evidence is weak and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effect of pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment of xanthelasmas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty female Caucasian patients with 38 lesions (< or =1 mm above skin level) were enrolled. They received up to five treatment sessions with a PDL (wavelength, 585 nm; energy fluence, 7 J/cm(2); pulse duration, 0.5 ms; spot size, 10 mm; number of passes, 2) at 2- to 3-week intervals. Outcomes of childhood hemangiomas treated with the pulsed-dye laser with dynamic cooling: a retrospective chart analysis.

BACKGROUND: Laser treatment of childhood hemangiomas remains controversial. Previous studies have used outdated technology, resulting in a potential overrepresentation of adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of hemangiomas treated with the most current laser technology. METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis of 90 patients with a median age of 3.0 months and a total of 105 hemangiomas were enrolled over a 2.5-year period. All were treated with the 595-nm long-pulse pulsed-dye laser (LP-PDL) with dynamic epidermal cooling at 2- to 8-week intervals depending on the stage of growt

[Selectivity of photothermolysis in the treatment of port wine stains using multiple pulses with a pulsed dye laser].

BACKGROUND: In 25 % to 50 % of patients with port wine stains treated with pulsed dye laser (even in multiple sessions), only a partial improvement is obtained that is often unsatisfactory for the patient. Various factors have been proposed to explain the resistance to treatment, such as the presence of deep, small-caliber, or very thick vessels that cannot be coagulated with a single laser pulse. Certain mathematical models suggest that multiple pulses would be effective in coagulating those vessels without losing the selectivity of photothermolysis, since more energy could be delivered to th

Investigation of the mechanism of action of nonablative pulsed-dye laser therapy in photorejuvenation and inflammatory acne vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: Nonablative lasers are widely used for treatment of wrinkles, atrophic scars and acne. These lasers stimulate dermal remodelling and collagen production, but the early molecular stimulus for this is unknown. The mechanism of nonablative lasers in inflammatory acne is variously suggested to be damage either to sebaceous glands or to Propionibacterium acnes. Their effects on cytokine production are unknown. OBJECTIVES: To assess the in vivo effects of a short pulse duration nonablative pulsed-dye laser (NA-PDL) previously used for photorejuvenation and treatment of acne, on cytokine

A newly modified 595-nm pulsed dye laser with compression handpiece for the treatment of photodamaged skin.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The pulsed dye laser set the standard of care for the treatment of vascular lesions, and recent modifications have enabled improved efficacy with fewer side effects. An investigational high energy, variable pulse duration pulsed dye laser has been modified to treat both vascular and pigmented lesions associated with photoaging. Each laser pulse is comprised of a sequence of eight uniform micropulses, which evenly distribute the pulse energy, effectively increasing the purpura threshold at any given fluence. Pigmented lesions are treated with a compression handpiece (

Encystation of Acanthamoeba castellanii: dye uptake for assessment by flow cytometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

AIMS: To develop rapid means of distinguishing between cysts and trophozoites of the opportunistic pathogen, Acanthamoeba castellanii, the causative agent of keratitis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fluorescence of Congo Red, Calcoflor White was specific for the endocyst wall; trophozoites did not become fluorescent. The anionic oxonol dye, DiBAC4(3), did not penetrate the cytoplasmic membrane after short-term (<5 min) exposure, whereas cysts are permeable and become fluorescent. Confocal scanning laser microscopy confirmed these properties and large populations of organisms were analysed by flow cyto

Complete elimination of large café-au-lait birthmarks by the 510-nm pulsed dye laser.

Traditional treatment modalities for café-au-lait spots include cryotherapy, dermabrasion, and excision with or without skin grafting. These treatments have shown varying degrees of success and, in some cases, have yielded significant side effects, such as permanent pigmentary alteration and scarring. The 510-nm pulsed dye laser has been shown to selectively destroy melanosomes that make up such epidermal pigmented lesions as café-au-lait spots without significant adverse sequelae. Thirty patients with 34 large café-au-lait birthmarks received 510-nm pulsed dye laser treatments at 6- to 8-week

The efficacy of a fractionated 1064-nm picosecond Nd: YAG laser compared with a pulsed dye laser for postoperative scar prevention: a prospective split-scar study.

Pulsed dye lasers (PDLs) are commonly used for early postoperative scar modulation, but evidence for fractionated picosecond lasers is limited. This prospective split-scar study compared the efficacy and safety of a fractionated 1064-nm picosecond Nd: YAG laser with PDL in the early treatment of linear postoperative scars. Fourteen adults received the picosecond Nd: YAG laser on one half of each scar and PDL on the other. Treatments were initiated immediately after suture removal on postoperative day 14 (week 0) in all participants and repeated at weeks 4 and 8. Outcomes were assessed at weeks

Dual-wavelength dye laser combined with betamethasone injection for treatment of keloids: protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Keloids, benign fibroproliferative tumours characterised by excessive fibroblast proliferation and over-deposition of extracellular matrix, pose a therapeutic challenge with high recurrence rates. Betamethasone (diprospan) injection (BI) is one of the most common non-invasive therapies for keloids. Pulsed dye laser (PDL) has the function of closing microvessels, which may become one of the auxiliary treatment methods of BI and may enhance its curative effect. Some studies suggest that the combination of a dual-wavelength dye laser (DWL) and BI may offer superior efficacy. This ra

Time interval between pulse dye laser treatments of port-wine stains: 30 years of experience.

Port-wine stains (PWS) are frequently refractory to laser treatments. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of treatment interval time. From 1990, 216 patients underwent Pulsed Dye Laser sessions. The laser sessions were scheduled at a minimum interval of 4 weeks to a maximum of 48 weeks. Clinical outcomes were assessed 8 weeks after the last laser session. Better results were obtained with 8 weeks interval time between therapy session, and high efficacies were also found for intervals of 4, 6 and 10 weeks. For greater interval instead, the effectiveness is significantly lower.
