Patterns of adverse childhood experiences and substance use among young adults: A latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been strongly linked with subsequent substance use. The aim of this study was to investigate how different patterns of ACEs influence substance use in young adulthood. METHODS: Using a community sample of young individuals (N=336; ages 18-25), we performed latent class analyses (LCA) to identify homogenous groups of young people with similar patterns of ACEs. Exposure to ACEs incorporates 13 childhood adversities including childhood maltreatment, household dysfunction, and community violence. Multiple linear and logistic regression model

Latent class analysis of comorbidity patterns among women with generalized and localized vulvodynia: preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: The pattern and extent of clustering of comorbid pain conditions with vulvodynia is largely unknown. However, elucidating such patterns may improve our understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in these common causes of chronic pain. We sought to describe the pattern of comorbid pain clustering in a population-based sample of women with diagnosed vulvodynia. METHODS: A total of 1457 women with diagnosed vulvodynia self-reported their type of vulvar pain as localized, generalized, or both. Respondents were also surveyed about the presence of comorbid pain conditions, incl

Latent class analysis of gilles de la tourette syndrome using comorbidities: clinical and genetic implications.

BACKGROUND: Although susceptibility loci exist for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), no causative gene has been identified, perhaps in part because of phenotypic heterogeneity. This study used latent class analyses (LCA) to identify GTS subphenotypes and assess characteristics and heritability of the classes. METHODS: The study included 952 individuals from 222 GTS families recruited for genetic studies. LCA identified a best-fit model for combinations of the diagnoses of GTS, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), OC symptoms and behaviors (OCS/OCB), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity dis

Medication belief profiles and associated factors in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medication beliefs play an important role in how patients understand and manage long-term treatment. Among patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis, identifying clinically meaningful patterns of medication beliefs may help inform more targeted and patient-centered medication management strategies. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among maintenance hemodialysis patients using the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire-Specific (BMQ-Specific) and the Patient-Perceived Medication Knowledge in Medication Use Scale (Okere-Renier Survey). Latent class analysis (LCA) was

Insomnia-LCA classifier: an open web application for insomnia subtype classification using latent class analysis.

The heterogeneity of insomnia presentations has long challenged research and clinical practice, motivating efforts to identify reliable disorder phenotypes. Person-centered, data-driven approaches such as latent class analysis (LCA) have provided new insights, suggesting that insomnia subtypes may differ not only in nocturnal symptoms but also in perceived impact and daytime distress. Despite this progress, LCA solutions often remain confined to the original datasets, limiting replication and applied use. To address this gap, we developed the insomnia-LCA classifier, an open-source web applica

Latent class profiles of psychiatric comorbidity among substance-affected Nigerian adolescents: a population-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidity among adolescents meeting diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder (SUD) and/or alcohol use disorder (AUD) is poorly characterised in sub-Saharan African settings. Existing approaches typically quantify co-occurring diagnoses individually rather than identifying distinct configurations of psychiatric burden. The present study applied latent class analysis (LCA) to delineate comorbidity profiles within a substance-affected Nigerian adolescent sample and examined associations between class membership, suicidality, cumulative adversity, and functional imp

A longitudinal latent class growth analysis of PTSD symptom development in mechanically ventilated ICU patients.

ICU patients exhibit a high incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During treatment, procedural pain (e.g., suctioning, ventilator asynchrony) and communication barriers can trigger significant stress responses, exacerbating feelings of fear and helplessness, ultimately contributing to PTSD post-extubation. Current research predominantly relies on cross-sectional studies, failing to capture the dynamic progression of PTSD. As recovery evolves, patients' psychological and physical states continuously change, necessitating adaptive intervention strategies. There is an urgent need fo

Three Distinct Pathways to First Episode Mania and Psychosis: Latent Class Analysis of Antecedent Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Despite the classic Kraepelinian dichotomy between bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ), contemporary evidence suggests shared antecedent risk factors and similarities in the early course. This study aimed to identify distinct trajectories leading to first-episode mania (FEM) and first-episode psychosis (FEP) by examining antecedent psychopathology, including psychiatric diagnoses, symptoms, substance use, and psychotropic medication exposure. METHODS: Individuals born after 1985 who resided in Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA, and had FEM/FEP were identified through the Roc

Decoding nonsuicidal self-injury profiles and characteristics of nonsuicidal self-injury using latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVE: There are numerous risk factors associated with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), contributing to the heterogeneity of the NSSI population. Differences in characteristics may exist between different subgroups. This study attempted to delineate distinct profiles and intervention strategies tailored to specific subgroups of NSSI. METHOD: This cross-sectional survey recruited 96,218 participants from 63 universities in China. All variables were measured using corresponding self-report questionnaires. Latent class analysis was conducted to determine different subgroups of NSSI. Analysis

Social capital buffers divergent prenatal depression trajectories: A latent class growth analysis in Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: The manifestation of prenatal depression symptoms demonstrates heterogeneous trajectories that may be mediated by maternal social capital reserves. OBJECTIVES: This longitudinal study aimed to (1) characterize distinct developmental trajectories of prenatal depressive symptoms and (2) examine the predictive capacity of early pregnancy social capital in determining trajectory subgroup membership. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected from 455 pregnant women in Chengdu assessed at three gestational phases: first trimester (<14 weeks), second trimester (14-28 weeks), and third t

Patterns of Reentry Concerns Among Incarcerated People in Belgium: Insights From a Latent Class Analysis.

The transition from prison to the community is often marked by challenges across multiple life domains, underscoring the need for a multidimensional perspective on reentry. Although such challenges can result in concerns about reentry during incarceration, little is known about these concerns. This study uses survey data from incarcerated individuals (N = 716) across fifteen Flemish and Brussels prisons (Belgium) to examine the heterogeneity of reentry concerns from a multidimensional perspective. A Latent Class Analysis identified five distinct patterns: unconcerned (24.80%), subsistence-conc

Preconception health risk profiles among women planning pregnancy in northern Ethiopia: a latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Although the WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classify preconception health risks (PCHRs) into biomedical, behavioural and social categories, this classification remains theoretical, mainly inconsistent and lacks a scientifically robust framework. Data-driven clustering techniques may help clarify this complexity for policymakers and healthcare providers. This study aimed to assess the status of PCHRs and identify latent classes of these risks among women preparing for pregnancy. DESIGN AND METHODS: This community-based cross-sectional study was conduct

Latent class analysis identifies novel coeliac disease subgroups with distinctive clinical features: a multicentric study.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease (CD) is a lifelong, immune-mediated disorder characterised by a wide clinical spectrum, which often challenges traditional classifications like the Oslo definitions. We aimed to recognise novel CD subtypes based on clinical features using latent class analysis (LCA) and validate these phenotypes with a predictive supervised model. METHODS: In this multicentric retrospective study, 2478 adult CD patients from 19 Italian centres (2011-2021) were analysed. Clinical, laboratory, endoscopic, and histological data were collected. LCA was applied to categorical symptom va

Latent class analysis of actigraphy within the depression early warning (DEW) longitudinal clinical youth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Wearable-generated data yield objective information on physical activity and sleep variables, which, are in turn, related to the phenomenology of depression. There is a dearth of wearable-generated data regarding physical activity and sleep variables among youth with clinical depression. METHODS: Longitudinal (up to 24 months) quarterly collections of wearable-generated variables among adolescents diagnosed with current/past major depression. Latent class analysis was employed to classify participants on the basis of wearable-generated: Activity, Sleep Duration, and Sleep efficien

COVID-19 Symptoms and Mental Health Outcomes among Italian Healthcare Workers: A Latent Class Analysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to long-lasting consequences for workers leading to what has been termed a "psychological pandemic". Some categories, such as healthcare workers (HCWs), are considered high risk due to factors such as increased exposure and stressful working conditions. In this study, we investigate whether levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms and COVID-19-related fear (IES-6 and PSI-4) are associated with illness severity in a sample of 318 infected HCWs in Italy. To investigate the presence of different profiles of COVID-19 severity, Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was performed

Latent class analysis of perceived stigma among older adults receiving medications for opioid use disorder.

RATIONALE: Public stigma surrounds individuals who use medication for their recovery from a substance use disorder. However, we know little about subgroups of individuals with varying levels of perceived stigma and how these levels may be associated with physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and social support. METHODS: We used latent class analysis to define subgroups of people aged 50-72 years of age (N = 104) who were enrolled in eight medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) programs to explore subgroupings and correlates of group membership. RESULTS: We found evide
