Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women: implications for access to abortion at the regional level.

Article 14(2)(c) of the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women enjoins States Parties to take appropriate measures "to protect the reproductive rights of women by authorising medical abortion in cases of sexual assault, rape, incest, and where continued pregnancy endangers the mental and physical health of the mother or the life of the mother or the foetus." This paper considers the implications of Article 14 for access to safe, legal abortion. It is submitted that Article 14 has the potential to impact positively on regional abortion law, policy, and practice in 3 main areas.

Stigmatised as 'promoting' with a duty to report: public healthcare workers providing services to criminalised 'key populations for HIV' under Uganda's 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act.

This paper analyses the experiences of public healthcare workers in Uganda under the Anti Homosexuality Act (AHA) 2023, who specialise in the provision of HIV prevention and treatment services to criminalised 'key populations' for HIV, including men who have sex with men, transgender women, and female sex workers. Utilising in-depth semi-structured interviews with 17 public healthcare workers and participant observation with LGBTQ+ and HIV activists, public health officials, and development workers, this ethnographic study explored the legal, social and ethical challenges that public healthcar

Mapping access to abortion from prisons and immigration removal centres in the United Kingdom, British crown dependencies, and the Republic of Ireland.

OBJECTIVES: Despite legalization, barriers to accessing abortion persist in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and British Crown Dependencies, including distance to care. These barriers may be exacerbated for people incarcerated or detained in prisons and Immigration Removal Centres (IRC). This study aimed to identify the distance from prisons and IRCs to the nearest public abortion providing service in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, and British Crown Dependencies. STUDY DESIGN: We identified facilities that detain women and girls and public services that provide abortion by co

Hotline tip to probable cause: filling the gap between suspicion and physical abuse findings for mandated reporters.

Almost all care managers are mandated reporters and as such they are responsible for reporting suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to state child protective services. Experienced case managers understand that making a call to an abuse hotline does not guarantee that the family or child will get the help that they believe will reduce the child's risk of abuse. This article addresses legal and policy aspects of reporting child maltreatment and will include an examination of the policies on mandated reporting and professional and legal definitions of abuse. It will define the fundamental el

Medical students are afraid to include abortion in their future practices: in-depth interviews in Maharastra, India.

BACKGROUND: Unsafe abortions are estimated to cause eight per-cent of maternal mortality in India. Lack of providers, especially in rural areas, is one reason unsafe abortions take place despite decades of legal abortion. Education and training in reproductive health services has been shown to influence attitudes and increase chances that medical students will provide abortion care services in their future practice. To further explore previous findings about poor attitudes toward abortion among medical students in Maharastra, India, we conducted in-depth interviews with medical students in the

Rapid Response to the Legalization of Fentanyl Test Strips in Alabama: An Academic-Community Partnership.

In June 2022, Alabama legalized fentanyl test strips (FTS). In response to this new opportunity to prevent overdoses, Project Linkage, Education, and Prevention (LEAP)-an academic-community partnership providing substance use prevention services-quickly purchased FTS and started distributing them in the Birmingham area. We describe how the Addiction Prevention Coalition, a substance use education and harm reduction provider, distributed 7300 FTS in the first year of legalization via Project LEAP and discuss its efforts to decrease substance use among young people. Acceptance of family planning methods by induced abortion seekers: An observational study over five years.

BACKGROUND: Prior to legalization of abortion, induced abortions were performed in an illegal manner and that resulted in many complications hence abortion was legalized in India in 1971 and the number of induced abortions has been gradually increasing since then. One way of preventing abortions is to provide family planning services to these abortion seekers so that same is not repeated. The study was performed to find out the acceptance of contraception after abortion. METHODS: A prospective study was performed over a period of five years from 2010 to 2014. Vicarious trauma among legal practitioners and judicial officers.

The term 'vicarious trauma' refers to a range of cumulative and harmful effects from exposure to the trauma of others and is now recognised as a category of causation in the diagnostic criteria of post-traumatic stress disorder. Legal practitioners may be exposed to the risk of harm from vicarious trauma in a number of occupational contexts. This article reviews recent case authority, including a 2023 prosecution of Court Services Victoria for failing to provide a safe workplace in the Coroners Court of Victoria and the High Court decision in Kozarov v Victoria (2022) and the Victoria Court of

Empowerment in drug treatment: dilemmas in implementing policy in welfare institutions.

This article analyzes how and why welfare policies focusing on empowerment as users' self-management create dilemmas in medically assisted drug treatment in Denmark. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the article points to two sets of dilemmas by focusing on the relationship between legal and institutional setups and staff and user possibilities for agency. The first dilemma concerns how to provide user self-management and individualized services and the actual possibilities of effectuating this in welfare institutions imbued by limited resources, manpower, and local rules. The second, how to

Substance Use Disorders, Mental Illness, and Health Care Utilization Among Adults With Recent Criminal Legal Involvement.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals involved with the criminal legal system have higher rates of mental illness, addiction, and health care utilization. The authors examined whether substance use disorders and mental illness alone or in combination drive health care utilization among those with recent criminal legal involvement. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used nationally representative data from U.S. adults with past-year criminal legal involvement (N=9,039) recorded in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015-2019). Using adjusted negative binomial regression models, the authors estim

State-Level Transgender-Specific Policies, Race/Ethnicity, and Use of Medical Gender Affirmation Services among Transgender and Other Gender-Diverse People in the United States.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Protective transgender-specific policies (including those related to experiences of discrimination, health insurance coverage, and changing legal documents) are associated with increased access to medical gender affirmation services (hormone treatment, therapy/counseling) for transgender and other gender-diverse people. Restrictive transgender-specific policies are associated with less access to these services. The relationship between race/ethnicity and use of medical gender affirmation services varies across states and is context specific, indicating that race/ethni

The European TrustHealth project experiences with implementing a security infrastructure.

Accepting the shared care paradigm, communication and co-operation required between health care establishments must be provided in a trustworthy way. The solution for establishing such trustworthy environment has to be based on a common policy framework, on services, and mechanisms, which have been standardised. In Europe, the legal framework, other policy issues, and the services and mechanisms needed have been developed within projects launched by the European Commission, by the European standards body CEN as well as by temporarily established groups. Within the European TrustHealth projects

Pattern and outcomes of medical malpractice cases in Ghana: a systematic content analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Medical malpractice complaints are apparently on the rise in Ghana. Though it has been suggested that medico-legal training programmes should emphasise the kinds of legal problems that healthcare staff encounter most frequently in practice, no comprehensive study currently analyses the pattern and outcomes of existing case laws. DESIGN: Systematic content analysis. DATA SOURCES: Medical malpractice case laws sourced from Ghanaian legal repositories, media platforms and other grey literature sources. RESULTS: Nine case laws were retained. Most of the cases (n=7) involved negligen

Medical opinion on abortion in Jamaica: a national Delphi survey of physician, nurses, and midwives.

A national sample of 120 Jamaican physicians, public health nurses, and licensed midwives participated in a two-stage Delphi survey to identify medical opinion on proposed liberlization of Jamaica's abortion law, and to predict the likely impact of such legislative action on existing health and family planning services. More than 80 percent of the respondents favored legalization of abortion, and most supported changes in the health service delivery system to accommodate the expected demand. They believed that clandestine abortion, involving pharmacists and physicians, is already widely practi

A person with TS was evaluated to consider his criminal responsibility after swearing at a referee during a football game. He was also evaluated as to whether or not he was capable of professionally driving a service bus. Additionally, medico-legal situations regarding military service, obtaining a shotgun license and marriages of patients w

Medicologal service is one of the vital component of hospital services which helps in providing justice to the victim and strengthen the public relations.
