Pediculosis capitis, or head lice, is a common infestation among children worldwide. Multiple therapies exist for the treatment of this condition, including topical pediculicides and oral medications. When used in combination with environmental decontamination, these drugs can be very effective in eradicating head lice infestation without significant adverse events. The present study discusses the use of available over-the-counter and prescription treatments, including pyrethroids and permethrin, lindane, malathion, ivermectin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, in the treatment of head lice.

During the examination of a wounded white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) brought to the clinic of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Selcuk University, lice infestation of the oral cavity was observed and 26 lice were collected. The lice were identified as Piagetiella titan during microscopical examination. No other report of this particular subject in Turkey was found. Therefore, this original observation is reported as the first case of P. titan infestation of a white pelican found in Turkey. This report is being included in the data of the parasitic fauna of Turkey.

Lice infestations of horses occur mainly during winter months and are characterized by severe pruritus and an unkempt coat. Two lice have been described for equines namely Bovicola (Damalinia) equi and Haemotopinus asini. There is a scarcity of data on the occurrence and prevalence rates of these horse pathogens in Turkey. This paper reports a thoroughbred farm, in which two horses were found to be infested with B. equi. The horses were treated with propoxur and no lice or nymphs could be found after treatment for10 days.

Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation continues to pose a persistent and escalating challenge to the global salmon aquaculture industry. Given the complexity of host-parasite interactions, family-based transcriptomic studies provide crucial insights into genetic variation in host responses to sea lice, potentially guiding the development of selective breeding programs to manage parasite resistance in Atlantic salmon. This study investigated global gene expression (transcriptomic) responses of the skin and head kidney of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from different families following i

BACKGROUND: Trichodectes canis is a small chewing louse found globally that primarily infests dogs. Limited information is available on the efficacy of isoxazolines against infestation with the chewing louse. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of afoxolaner, an isoxazoline class compound, in naturally infested domestic dogs.
METHODS: The field study was carried out in Romania. Between September 2021 and December 2021, 43 dogs with confirmed T. canis infestation were included in the study. On the day of the inclusion (day 0), each animal was clinically examined and randomly treate

One hundred and one subjects with head louse infestation were entered into two separate studies, in which a phenothrin aqueous/alcoholic lotion was compared to a carbaryl lotion and a malathion lotion. Fifty subjects were treated with a single application of the phenothrin lotion, 28 with the carbaryl lotion and 23 with the malathion lotion. In the comparative study of the phenothrin and malathion lotions an inspection on the day following treatment showed no live lice remained, but that six of the subjects treated with malathion lotion still had evidence of viable eggs (p less than 0.05). BACKGROUND: Human pediculosis is caused by hematophagous lice, which are transmitted between individuals via direct and/or indirect contact. Despite the public health importance of louse infestation, information concerning the global burden of pediculosis and the epidemiological landscape of louse-borne diseases is limited. The aim of this review was to summarize the biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and control of lice infestation in humans. We also discussed the latest advances in molecular taxonomy and molecular genetics of lice.
METHODS: We searched five electronic bibliographic databases

Head lice infestation have become a great problem in school children, reaching epidemic proportions in some countries. An open study was conducted to determinate how widespread head lice infestation were among preschool and elementary school children in Bilbao (North of Spain). We studied 23,624 children from whole public school of the city, aged 3 years to 14 years. The results of head lice control were: total prevalence 9.39% (between 1.8% and 31.6%). We found more girls than boys become infested (1.7% 1.0). Higher infestation levels were found between third and fifth grades (9 years to 11 y

In this paper we use detailed data about the biology of the head louse (pediculus humanus capitis) to build a model of the evolution of head lice colonies. Using theory and computer simulations, we show that the model can be used to assess the impact of the various strategies usually applied to eradicate head lice, both conscious (treatments) and unconscious (grooming). In the case of treatments, we study the difference in performance that arises when they are applied in systematic and non-systematic ways. Using some reasonable simplifying assumptions (as random mixing of human groups and the

The head louse Pediculus humanus capitis (De Geer) is a hematophagous ectoparasite that inhabits the human scalp. The infestations are asymptomatic; however, skin irritation from scratching occasionally may cause secondary bacterial infections. The present study determined the presence and frequency of the knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation T929I in 245 head lice collected from Mexico, Peru, and Canada. Head lice were collected manually using a comb in the private head lice control clinic. Allele mutation at T9291 was present in 100% of the total sampled populations (245 lice) examined. In ad

Trials showed that existing treatments for lice on cattle were not completely effective. A few long-nosed lice, Linognathus vituli survived treatment with louse powder containing gamma HCH (BHC), amitraz spray and Prolate pour-on (20% phosmet). One treatment with cyhalothrin or cypermethrin gave complete control of all four species of lice infesting cattle in the UK. These synthetic pyrethroids were applied as sprays containing 250 p.p.m. and 1000 p.p.m. of active constituent, respectively. Another synthetic pyrethroid, deltamethrin was very effective against all species of cattle lice when ap

Trench fever is a body louse-borne disease caused by Bartonella quintana Brenner. The recent status of louse infestation in Nepalese children is not well known. We collected head and body lice, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer and Pediculus humanus humanus L., respectively, from 30 children, including 11 cases of double infestation with both head and body lice. Detection of B. quintana in both louse species identified was carried out by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR products with B. quintana DNA sequences were detected in both head and body lice from two children as well as in body lic

A postal questionnaire was used to collect information on the prevalence of lice on cattle on a random sample of dairy farms in England and the bordering counties of Wales. Replies were received from 1040 (52.8 per cent) of the 1970 farms which were mailed. Fifty per cent of farmers reported having ever seen or suspected lice in their herds and 29 per cent reported possible infestations in the winter of 1996/97. Visits were made to 24 farms in the south west of England during February 1998. Twelve of the farmers said that they had seen or suspected lice in their herd since October 1997, and th

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestation is an infection of the scalp and skin which causes blood loss, discomfort, and social and psychological distress with the possibility of secondary bacterial infections occurring at scratch sites. In Pakistan, although some small scale studies have been conducted to investigate prevalence of head lice in school children and the general population, no population based estimates have been reported. The National Health Survey of Pakistan (NHSP 1990 - 94) was a nationally representative health examination survey of the Pakistani population. The NHSP is the first po

Pediculus humanus capitis infestation is one of the most underestimated parasitoses still constituting a current epidemiological and social problem. Haematophagous insects, the etiological factor of pediculosis capitis, spread most easily in preschool children, which is determined by social and behavioural aspects. The study aimed to search for factors contributing to pediculosis capitis persistence in kindergartens located in south-eastern Poland. For this purpose, anonymous surveys among the management staff of preschool institutions were conducted. Head lice infestations were reported in 87…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of visual inspection and wet combing in pediculosis capitis (head lice infestation). Visual inspection of 5 predilection sites (temples, behind the ears, and neck) was performed first, followed by wet combing of hair moistened with conditioner. Presence of mobile stages was defined as active infestation, presence of nits alone as historic infestation.
DESIGN: Observer-blinded comparison of 2 diagnostic methods.
SETTING: Five primary schools in which head lice infestation was epidemic.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 304 students aged 6 to 12 years.

This study investigated the safety and efficacy of two forms of D-limonene (DL) against Columbicola columbae (pigeon feather lice); pure and a nanoemulsion formulation (DLN). The cell cytotoxicity of the prepared forms of DL/DLN was investigated using skin cell lines. In vitro and ex vivo bioassays were applied on lice. The ex vivo bioassay was done on cut feathers containing lice eggs. The in vivo experiment was conducted on pigeons naturally infested by lice. The infested pigeons were treated with DL, DLN, or deltamethrin (D) as a positive control. Both forms of D-limonene were found to be s

Pediculosis and scabies are caused by ectoparasites. Pruritus is the most common presenting symptom. Head and pubic lice infestations are diagnosed with visualization of live lice. Nits (lice eggs or egg casings) alone are not sufficient to diagnose a current infestation. A "no-nit" policy for return to school is not recommended because nits can remain even after successful treatment. First-line pharmacologic treatment for pediculosis is permethrin 1% lotion or shampoo. Newer treatments are available but costly, and resistance patterns are generally unknown. Noninsecticidal agents, including d…
