Gingival lymphangioma circumscriptum in children: a misdiagnosed gingival lesion-insights from a multicenter case series.

Lymphatic malformations are uncommon congenital anomalies resulting from abnormal lymphatic development and are considered hamartomatous rather than neoplastic lesions. Within the oral cavity, gingival involvement may pose a diagnostic challenge due to its clinical resemblance to common reactive or inflammatory conditions. This study reports four new cases of gingival lymphatic malformations diagnosed across 3 oral pathology centers in Argentina and Chile. Clinically, the lesions presented as small, localized gingival enlargements with a vesicular or lobulated surface, sometimes displaying tra

[Chyluria with "nephrotic syndrome-like" presentation: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach].

Chyluria implies an abnormal communication between the lymphatic system and the urinary tract. It is more frequent in endemic areas of lymphatic filariasis, which constitutes the main cause. Chyluria may mimic a nephrotic syndrome. Diagnosis of chyluria is based on urinary cytological and biocheminal analysis. Localization of the fistula needs medical imaging: cystoscopy, retrograde pyelography, lymphoscintigraphy and more recently magnetic resonance lymphography. Due to frequent spontaneous remissions, traitement can require only dietary measures. In case of malnutrition or clinical complicat

Chyluria associated with renal vasculitis.

Chyluria is usually associated with abnormal retrograde or collateral flow of lymph from intestinal lymphatics into lymphatics of the kidney, ureter or bladder. Chyluria has been described in patients with lymphoma, carcinoma, trauma, abscess, tuberculosis, filariasis, pregnancy and stenoses of the thoracic duct. In this case report we describe a patient who presented with chyluria associated with severe hyperlipidemia due to nephrotic syndrome induced by microscopic polyangiitis. Laboratory, histological and radiological examination did not show evidence of filarial infestation, tuberculous i

Successful treatment of pulmonary lymphatic perfusion syndrome with lymphatic intervention embolization: a case report.

Pulmonary Lymphatic Perfusion Syndrome (PLPS) is a rare condition characterized by abnormal lymphatic drainage into the lungs, leading to symptoms such as chyloptysis and chylous effusions. We report a case of a 54-year-old male with PLPS who presented with persistent cough, milky sputum, and pericardial effusion. Following initial misdiagnosis and ineffective empirical treatment for a presumed pulmonary infection, a definitive diagnosis of PLPS was established. The patient underwent successful percutaneous thoracic duct embolization, resulting in complete resolution of symptoms and imaging fi

Genetic counselling as care of the self.

Lymphangiomatosis (eg, generalized lymphatic anomaly) is an abnormal proliferation of lymphatic endothelial cells. It is often a childhood disease, but it may present in adulthood by infiltrating organs and cause obstruction, bleeding, or disruption of lymphatic flow. Pulmonary involvement may be mild or cause diffuse interstitial lung disease, airway obstruction, hemoptysis, chylothorax, chylopericardium, and culminate in respiratory failure. Treatment has been limited to surgical resection or drainage procedures because there is no accepted effective systemic therapy. This report presents a

Cystic lymphangioma of the mediastinum.

Cystic lymphangioma is a rare congenital benign tumor. It results from focal proliferation of well-differentiated lymphatic tissue originating from abnormal development of the lymphatic system. Most cystic lymphangiomas occur in the primitive lymph sacs of children or young adults. They generally appear in the neck (75%) and axillary region (20%). Only 1% are located in the mediastinum. Acquired lymphangiomas, which are principally seen in middle-aged adults, are caused by a process of chronic lymphatic obstruction secondary to surgery, chronic infection, or radiation. Here, we present the cas

Lymph Node Transplantation Decreases Swelling and Restores Immune Responses in a Transgenic Model of Lymphedema.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary lymphedema is a common complication of cancer treatment and recent studies have demonstrated that lymph node transplantation (LNT) can decrease swelling, as well as the incidence of infections. However, although these results are exciting, the mechanisms by which LNT improves these pathologic findings of lymphedema remain unknown. Using a transgenic mouse model of lymphedema, this study sought to analyze the effect of LNT on lymphatic regeneration and T cell-mediated immune responses. METHODS: We used a mouse model in which the expression of the human diphtheria toxin

SVEP1 is important for morphogenesis of lymphatic system: Possible implications in lymphedema.

SVEP1, also known as Polydom, is a large extracellular mosaic protein with functions in protein interactions and adhesion. Since Svep1 knockout animals show severe edema and lymphatic system malformations, the aim of this study is to evaluate the presence of SVEP1 variants in patients with lymphedema. We analyzed DNA from 246 lymphedema patients for variants in known lymphedema genes, 235 of whom tested negative and underwent a second testing for new candidate genes, including SVEP1, as reported here. We found three samples with rare heterozygous missense single-nucleotide variants in the SVEP

Cytological and Biochemical Analyses of Lymphatic Fluid from Patients with Lymphatic Malformations.

Background: Intracystic hemorrhage from lymphangiomas is a common phenomenon in lymphatic malformations (LMs); however, little is known about the associated compositional changes in the lymphatic fluid. Materials and Methods: We prospectively collected lymphatic fluid from children with LMs. Lymphatic fluid was divided depending on the bleeding status into the bleeding and nonbleeding groups. The fluid was subjected to cytological and biochemical analyses to determine protein and cytokine levels. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the two groups. Results: There were significant differ

CCM3 Loss-Induced Lymphatic Defect Is Mediated by the Augmented VEGFR3-ERK1/2 Signaling.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) can happen anywhere in the body, although they most commonly produce symptoms in the brain. The role of CCM genes in other vascular beds outside the brain and retina is not well-examined, although the 3 CCM-associated genes (CCM1, CCM2, and CCM3) are ubiquitously expressed in all tissues. We aimed to determine the role of CCM gene in lymphatics. Approach and Results: Mice with an inducible pan-endothelial cell (EC) or lymphatic EC deletion of Ccm3 (Pdcd10ECKO or Pdcd10LECKO) exhibit dilated lymphatic capillaries and collecting vessels with abn

Lymphangiogenesis-mediated shedding of LAM cell clusters as a mechanism for dissemination in lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) affects exclusively women of reproductive age, involves the lungs and axial lymphatic system, and is frequently complicated with renal angiomyolipomas. LAM lesions are generated by the proliferation of LAM cells with mutations of one of the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) genes. Recent studies indicate that LAM cells can migrate or metastasize to form new lesions in multiple organs, although they show a morphologically benign appearance. In the previous study, we reported LAM-associated lymphangiogenesis and implicated its role in the progression of LAM. In this

Progressive vertebral collapse in diffuse angiomatosis.

A case of vanishing bone disease is presented, with radiologic, endoscopic, and peritoneoscopic evidence of angiomatous involvement of the bones, surrounding soft tissues, and gastrointestinal tract. The diagnosis was made by a combination of radiologic techniques and endoscopy. Areas of absent bone were shown to opacify after intralymphatic injections of contrast material, providing in vivo demonstrations that these areas of vanishing bone are occupied by abnormal lymphatics. The etiology remains obscure, but our review of the literature suggests that this condition may be one of a large spec

Small Bowel Lymphangiectasia Leading to Massive Gastrointestinal Bleeding: A Case Report.

Lymphangiomas are benign lymphatic system abnormalities that can appear anywhere on the skin and mucous membranes. Lymphangiomas are caused by congenital or acquired lymphatic system disorders. In the congenital form, although the cause is unknown it is said that it is formed by the incorrect attachment of lymphatic channels to the main lymphatic drainage duct before the age of 5 years. lymphangiectasia as a subgroup of lymphangioma occurs seldom in the small bowel, especially in adults. If that happens, protein-losing enteropathy will be the most common presenting sign. In the present study,

Lymphoscintigraphy and colour Doppler sonography in the assessment of leg oedema of unknown cause.

Oedema of the lower limbs may be associated with a number of factors, most commonly a lymphatic or venous abnormality. Generally effective treatment options are only available with venous disorders. The aim of this study is to show that a combination of duplex Doppler sonography and lymphoscintigraphy in patients with limb oedema will help to determine the aetiology and thus identify patients for whom treatment is appropriate. 32 patients presenting with unexplained oedema involving the lower limb have been studied. Each patient underwent Doppler sonography followed by lymphoscintigraphy. In 1

Genotype and phenotype in patients with Noonan syndrome and a RIT1 mutation.

PURPOSE: Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by craniofacial dysmorphism, growth retardation, cardiac abnormalities, and learning difficulties. It belongs to the RASopathies, which are caused by germ-line mutations in genes encoding components of the RAS mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. RIT1 was recently reported as a disease gene for NS, but the number of published cases is still limited. METHODS: We sequenced RIT1 in 310 mutation-negative individuals with a suspected RASopathy and prospectively in individuals who underwent genetic testing for

[Development of a case of Mycobacterium avium complex disease from right pleural effusion].

Moist pleurisy in patients with Mycobacterium avium Complex (MAC) is rarer than tuberculosis. We encountered an extremely rare case of MAC disease in a 75-year-old man who initially had only right pleural effusion. Gaffky VII was detected in the pleural effusion, and Mycobacterium avium was identified by culture and PCR. Although administration of antitubercular agents (RFP, INH, EB, and SM) + CAM and thoracic lavage were repeated, the Gaffky persisted strongly. Accordingly, pulmonary decortication and filling of the cavity with an omental flap were performed as surgical treatments. However, f

Magnetic Resonance Lymphography of Lymphatic Vessels in Upper Extremity With Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL) has been proven to be able to visualize pathological lymphatic networks and accompanying complications through subcutaneous injection of commonly used contrast agents. However, no comprehensive prior studies have previously been reported regarding MRL for the evaluation of upper extremity lymphedema in patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). In this study, we establish a novel MRL protocol to characterize the normal and abnormal characteristics of different clinical stages of BCRL in patients using high-spatial-resolution MRL
