Interleukin 2 (IL-2) and gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) were determined in supernatants of mitogen- and antigen-driven cell cultures from patients with hepatosplenic or intestinal schistosomiasis. Skin reactivity was tested using a panel of eight recall antigens. Results were compared with those of uninfected local controls. In both schistosomiasis groups, IL-2 activity was reduced before treatment. In less than one third of the patients, schistosomal antigens elicited detectable IL-2 activity. Leukemic cells of a 20 year old patient, suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, were characterized by surface marker and functional analysis. A significant cell population within this type of leukemia expresses concomitantly the CD4 and CD8 antigen on the same cell and might represent a new differentiation stage of T-cells with the gamma/delta receptor. The leukemic cells show a distinct pattern of growth response to mitogens and lymphokines, which might correlate to their differentiation stage. Moreover, a "natural killer"-like activity can be induced in these cells by IL-2.

This case report describes a child with severe constitutional hypoplastic anemia and Seckel's syndrome. Immunological analysis on mononuclear peripheral blood cells revealed an abnormally low ratio of T-helper to T-suppressor/cytotoxic cells and a highly increased number of HLA-DR-positive T suppressor/cytotoxic cells. T-cell lines specific for infective muscle larvae antigens of the intestinal nematode Trichinella spiralis have been generated in vitro. These antigen-specific T-cell lines express the L3T4+ Ly2- phenotype and secrete the lymphokines IL-2, IL-3 and gamma-IFN. The schistosome granuloma cultured in vitro under antigenic specific and unspecific stimulation releases macrophage fusion factor (MFF) into the medium, adjusting the production dynamics to the spontaneous modulation model already described.
